Laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy has undergone a rapid evolution. The technique currently favored by many laparoscopic surgeons places a prosthetic mesh over the myopectineal orifice. We describe a femoral nerve palsy after such an operation and detail the anatomy of the nerves at risk during laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy. We discuss how injury to these structures and the attendant anterior thigh pain and weakness may be avoided.

In a series of 55 consecutive patients with both single- and multiple-valve disease and aortic aneurysm, the aortic valve was replaced using a continuous suture technique. The technique is applicable for both ball- and disc-valve prostheses. This method resulted in a marked reduction in cardiopulmonary bypass time with a very low incidence of perivalvular leak. It has major advantages over other continuous and interrupted suture techniques.

A magnetic stirring-assisted supported liquid membrane-based extraction method was developed for determining capsaicinoids in spicy food samples. A porous polypropylene membrane was used as a solid support, with diethyl carbonate introduced for the first time as membrane impregnation solvent. This study investigates the contamination of phthalate esters (PAEs) and microplastics (MPs) in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) collected from the southern coast of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Significant amount of microplastics (< 5 mm) were transported into the South China Sea via Pearl River Estuary. However, comprehensive studies on the occurrence and retention of microplastics in this estuarine system were still limited. To fill this gap, we investigated the distribution of microplastics in still-water ecosystems and running water ecosystems in the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary. We examined the presence of microplastics in blue mussels Mytilus spp. from the intertidal zone of western Spitsbergen in Arctic Svalbard. The optical microscopy technique detected a total of 148 microplastics, with the highest concentration per mussel being 24 particles. Microplastics were found in 84% of the examined mussels. This is the first study that investigated the presence, distribution, and composition of microplastics, MPs (1-5 mm) on beaches in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji. A temporal assessment over three years on six beaches was undertaken to investigate different beach traits on MP abundance. INTRODUCTION: Perineal hernia is a protrusion of intra-abdominal viscera through a defect in the pelvic floor and is a rare but challenging complication after extensive abdominoperineal surgery. There have been small series published after colorectal exenteration, but no cases have been reported after radical cystectomy and urethrectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68 years old woman developed an anterior perineal hernia, with no vaginal prolapse, after an anterior exenteration for bladder cancer. A perineal approach with the use of a synthetic polypropylene mesh was chosen to resolve the condition.
