Explainable machine learning for the prediction of Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive impairment: a consensus feature selection approach.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive impairment remains challenging, and existing machine learning (ML) models often suffer from feature instability and limited interpretability. This study developed robust and explainable ML models using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers by systematically comparing sparsity-based (LASSO), importance-based (Boruta), and consensus feature selection strategies. METHODS: A publicly available cohort of 333 individuals (91 cognitively impaired, 242 cognitively normal) was analyzed. Data were split into training (70%) and ind

cAMRah: a scalable and portable workflow for harmonized antimicrobial resistance gene prediction from bacterial genomes.

SUMMARY: cAMRah is a curated workflow designed to predict antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in microbial genomes, either in the cloud or on any personal computer running Docker containers. Numerous AMR gene-finding packages exist, each utilizing different algorithms and prediction methods. cAMRah adopts a consensus-based approach to AMR prediction, recognizing that no single tool can identify all AMR genes. It integrates and runs six AMR-finder tools and databases (with plans for future expansion), scores the AMR predictions, maps all results to CDS coordinates and harmonizes the annotation

Strengthening sociometric prediction: scientific advances in the assessment of children's peer relations.

This study assessed the strength of sociometric classification in the prediction of concurrent sociobehavioral adjustment. Differential adjustment for subgroups of unclassified children were also examined. Participants were 881 fifth graders (ages 9 to 12). Classification strength (CS) and unclassified subgroups were determined through newly developed algorithms. CS added significantly to the prediction of all areas of adjustment. For example, highly rejected children were at extreme risk for victimization whereas highly controversial children were most likely to be bullies and relationally ag

A multimodal explainable artificial intelligence framework for interpretable Parkinson's disease prediction.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurological disorder that is difficult to diagnose at an early stage. Early diagnosis and prediction of the disease can help improve the prognosis of patients and therapeutic interventions. Although machine learning (ML) has shown strong potential for PD diagnosis and prediction, its clinical use is limited by the lack of model interpretability. In this study, advanced but interpretable framework is proposed for Parkinson’s disease diagnosis by incorporating explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and machine learning methods. The proposed framework est

Beyond prediction: explainable machine learning for ferritin estimation from complete blood count.

BACKGROUND: Serum ferritin is a primary marker of body iron stores; however, its diagnostic utility is limited by cost and non-specific elevation during inflammatory states. This study aimed to develop and validate explainable machine learning (ML) models to estimate ferritin status using only widely available and cost-effective complete blood count (CBC) and demographic parameters. METHODS: This prospective study analyzed 12,450 adult laboratory records. To ensure ferritin reflected true iron status, cases with inflammation (elevated white blood cell count or erythrocyte sedimentation rate)

A deep learning approach for the diagnosis and recurrence prediction of OKC.

Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) is a benign jaw tumor characterized by a high recurrence rate. However, its clinical diagnosis presents significant challenges due to complex pathological morphologies and inconspicuous early symptoms. In this paper, we propose an intelligent OKC diagnosis system that leverages multimodal data fusion and interpretable analysis. Specifically, we first devise a Multimodal Feature-based Diagnosis Model (MFDM), which utilizes a Spatial Feature Fusion Module (SFFM) to fuse features extracted from patients' oral pathological slides and tabular clinical parameters. Second

Adaptive time-frequency decomposition informer for pathological rest tremor sequence prediction.

Pathological tremor is a common symptom of various neurological disorders. Pathological tremor signal prediction is important to the tremor suppression equipment. However, how to improve the accuracy of multi-step prediction of tremor motion is a difficult problem. In this paper, an adaptive time-frequency decomposition informer (ATFDI) method is proposed to predict the signal of pathological tremor. For this method, an adaptive oscillator is used to model the tremor signal, and the tremor signal is decomposed into multiple sub-signals with narrow band and single main frequency. After eliminat

Linear antibody epitope prediction using AlphaFold2.

Defining the binding epitopes of antibodies is essential for understanding how they bind to their antigens and perform their molecular functions. However, while determining linear epitopes of monoclonal antibodies can be accomplished utilizing well-established empirical procedures, these approaches are generally labor- and time-intensive, and costly. To take advantage of the recent advances in protein structure prediction algorithms available to the scientific community, we developed a calculation pipeline based on the localColabFold implementation of AlphaFold2 that can predict linear antibod…

Air, Land, and Sea: Gene-Environment Interaction in Chronic Disease.

Each of us reflects a unique convergence of DNA and the environment. Over the past 2 decades, huge biobanks linked to electronic medical records have positioned the clinical and scientific communities to understand the complex genetic architecture underlying many common diseases. Although these efforts are producing increasingly accurate gene-based risk prediction algorithms for use in routine clinical care, the algorithms often fail to include environmental factors. This review explores the concept of heritability (genetic vs nongenetic determinants of disease), with emphasis on the role of e…

Detecting Clusters/Communities in Social Networks.

Cohen's κ, a similarity measure for categorical data, has since been applied to problems in the data mining field such as cluster analysis and network link prediction. In this paper, a new application is examined: community detection in networks. A new algorithm is proposed that uses Cohen's κ as a similarity measure for each pair of nodes; subsequently, the κ values are then clustered to detect the communities. This paper defines and tests this method on a variety of simulated and real networks. The results are compared with those from eight other community detection algorithms. Results show
