Uncertainty exists regarding accommodative and age changes in lens diameter and thickness in humans and monkeys. In this study, unaccommodated and accommodated refraction, lens diameter, and lens thickness were measured in rhesus monkeys across a range of ages. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the magnitude of surface astigmatism and subjective estimates of unacceptable blur flanking the near zone of progressive addition lenses (PALs).
METHODS: Eleven presbyopic subjects observed a row of capital letters at a distance of 40 cm looking left and right within the near zone of six 2.00 D add PAL designs, stopping when they reached the limits of "clear and comfortable" vision. We conducted a survey in order to gain insights into the reasons older persons decide to give up driving. Our survey focused on vision. We probed the relationship between visual deficiencies and driving status by asking older people about the problems they encountered while performing routine visual tasks. The results showed that older persons who had recently given up driving reported more visual problems than did their driving counterparts. UNLABELLED: We report 2 patients implanted with a small-aperture corneal inlay to correct presbyopia. After the surgery, both patients complained of visual symptoms and poor visual acuity. The distances from the center of the inlay to the corneal vertex center were 593 μm nasally and 159 μm superiorly in Case 1 and 72 μm temporally and 17 μm superiorly in Case 2.
