The pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea) is the smallest New World Monkey (average body mass of 120-130 g). As such, it faces possible challenges to thermoregulation. An endovascular model for producing and studying middle cerebral artery acute ischemic strokes was developed to avoid the need for an open surgical approach to the middle cerebral, anterior cerebral, posterior cerebral and internal carotid arteries. Endovascular occlusion of these vessels followed by Xenon-CT cerebral blood flow study confirmed the production of a middle cerebral artery distribution infarct in two primates. The methodology, advantages and drawbacks of this model are discussed.

To evaluate the long-term safety of implanting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in neonatal eyes using a nonhuman primate model, a one-piece all-polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) IOL was implanted into the posterior chamber of 21 neonatal Rhesus monkey eyes following a lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy. These monkeys then were monitored for 26 to 40 months for complications. The eyes from seven monkeys were studied histopathologically. Prevention and regression of induced atherosclerosis by d-alpha-tocopherol was investigated in 24 male M. fascicularis. One group received a basal diet, while three others consumed an atherogenic diet. The effect of basal ganglia stereotactic lesions on motor tone in 3 primates was quantitated. The elastic and neurogenic forces generated with a controlled stretch of each animal's upper extremities were measured pre- and postlesion, and compared to previous studies. The techniques were sensitive to subtle changes in motor tone that were not clinically apparent. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that the hippocampal formation and related structures in the medial temporal lobe are important for learning and memory. Retrograde amnesia was studied prospectively in monkeys to understand the contribution of the hippocampal formation to memory function. Monkeys learned to discriminate 100 pairs of objects beginning 16, 12, 8, 4, and 2 weeks before the hippocampal formation was removed (20 different pairs at each time period).
