After continuity resection of the jaw, free bony flaps are used for reconstruction. Despite implementation of a digital workflow and additively manufactured custom-made implants for flap fixation, plate complications such as bony non-union remain a clinical challenge. This is the first description of the finite element analysis of a novel 3D-printed implant system for mandibular reconstruction designed to overcome this limitation. Virtual surgical planning and patient-specific finite element analysis were performed in 12 cases requiring segmental mandibulotomy. The novel custom-made implants (

There is an increasing demand for ultrasound imaging technologies, particularly wearable and portable systems, for continuous physiological monitoring applications. Although some recent flexible ultrasound devices have adopted polymer encapsulations, typical rigid transducer designs still include metal housings and costly electrodes, contributing to increased device weight and fabrication cost. To address these limitations, we developed an aluminum-electrode/3D-printed polymer-housing ultrasound transducer (APUT) utilizing a polyvinylidene fluoride piezoelectric film. Compared to a gold-electr

3D printing is emerging as a promising fabrication technique for microfluidic devices. In this work, this technology was exploited in the development of a microfluidic chromatographic column with nominal volume of 54 µL. The microcolumn was packed with a cation exchange resin and characterized, using potassium iodide as a tracer, in terms of porosity (ε = 0.72), plate number, and asymmetry factor (0.8 < AS < 1.8 for flowrates >50 µL/min). To showcase the potential of this microdevice, it was exploited in the characterization of the chromatographic behavior of lysozyme. The measured saturation

Hydrogel-based bioinks are widely adopted in digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. Modulating their mechanical properties is especially beneficial in biomedical applications, such as directing cell activity toward tissue regeneration and healing. However, in both monolithic and granular hydrogels, the tunability of mechanical properties is limited to parameters such as cross-linking or packing density. Herein, we present a bioink platform with multiscale heterogeneity for DLP printing, fabricated by incorporating microgels within a cross-linked polymer matrix to form a mechanically tunab

One-pot CRISPR-based detection combining recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) enables rapid and accurate nucleic acid testing but faces challenges in performance, multiplexing, and field-ready lyophilization. Here, an enhanced one-pot, helicase-assisted RPA (hRPA)-combined, dual-CRISPR/uAsCas12a (EOD-CRISPR) assay is described which can be lyophilized on a 3D-printed microfluidic disc to achieve field-deployable multiplex bacteria detection. In EOD-CRISPR reactions, the reaction speed, sensitivity, and fluorescence signal are significantly enhanced due to the synergistic effect of bovine

Radiation exposure to the fingers of clinicians carrying out radiosynoviorthesis with yttrium citrate (90Y) can be an area of concern if equipment or practice is sub-optimal, with contact dose rates in the mSv·s-1range around the syringe and needle neck. Syringe shields reduce potential exposure around the syringe but offer no protection around the needle neck. There are no commercially available protection products in the United Kingdom to address this deficiency. Clinical safety requires that the clinician is able to feel the position of the needle and limit the amount of needle movement at

. The diagnosis of sleep apnea relies on the evaluation of polysomnography (PSG) recordings by experienced health monitoring practitioners. The labor-intensive nature of PSG and it's required complex instrumentation limit its widespread use across the general population. This research inquest offers a wearable health monitoring device in response to these challenges. The device incorporates a custom-fabricated force sensor resistor (FSR) seamlessly integrated with a microcontroller and pulse oximeter (SpO2) within a 3D-printed enclosure. OBJECTIVE: Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) refers to noninvasive neuromodulation techniques that apply a low-amplitude electric current through scalp electrodes to modulate brain activity. Conventional scalp electrodes are made of conductive rubber and are embedded in saline-soaked sponges, held in place using non-conductive rubber straps. Precisely positioning the electrodes at the desired location is challenging, and maintaining their position is equally difficult. In addition, as sponges are prone to drying out during prolonged use, they can compromise the electrode's conductivity a

BACKGROUND: 3D printing has emerged as an attractive alternative for the fabrication of microfluidic devices offering the ability for rapid prototyping and a high degree of customization, in contrast to conventional microfabrication techniques. Despite its potential, the size of internal features (such as microfluidic channels) has been limited to larger cross-sectional areas and shorter lengths. Advances in 3D printing technology and the development of custom resins have allowed for smaller features to be obtained, moving the field closer to genuine microfluidic devices. However, not all rese

For biohybrid actuators, the properties of synthetic materials interfacing with living cells are crucial due to cellular chemical and mechanical sensitivities. 3D-printable resins exhibit a wide range of properties, but mechanical properties are frequently reported before sterilization. Additionally, biocompatibility must be assessed for specific use cases, including in the context of the cell type and printing procedures. Therefore, this data descriptor details a new dataset of cytotoxicity and material properties of six commercially-available resins (three rigid and three elastomeric) printe

Sustaining life beyond Earth requires the creation of habitats, which is typically assumed to require costly transport of high-mass components from Earth. Here, we investigate an alternative approach based on in situ fabrication using biologically generated materials. We show that several common biomaterials are capable of blocking UV radiation, transmitting visible light, and maintaining pressure differences sufficient to permanently stabilize liquid H2O in a vacuum or low-pressure environment. As a proof of concept, we then demonstrate growth of eukaryotic green alga in a 3D printed PLA biop

Gelatin/chitosan nanoparticles loaded with carminic acid were adopted to construct and stabilize high internal phase Pickering emulsions for 3D/4D printing. Carminic acid was incorporated into gelatin/chitosan nanoparticles with excellent compatibility via interactions like hydrogen bonding and bridging flocculation. These gelatin/chitosan/carminic acid complex nanoparticles exhibited outstanding emulsifying ability, due to the fact that nanoparticle's amphiphilicity (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) and interfacial wettability (contact angle) promoted its adsorption at the oil-water interface.
