We describe three homosexual men presenting to the ear, nose and throat clinic with severe tonsillitis. All were subsequently diagnosed with secondary syphilis of the tonsil. Duration and intensity of pain induced by instillation of an acid local anesthetic eyedrop were compared in 321 normals and 77 KCS-patients. The medium duration of pain was increased in KCS-patients (16.23 s) compared to normals (7.64 s). Also the main intensity of pain was increased (KCS: 1.34, normals 0.63). Both differences were highly significant (< 0.001). The sensitivity of duration (limit 12 s) was 64% and the specificity 69%. Three cases of chronic infection with Borrelia burgdorferi are described. The patients presented with nodular or discoid fibrosis, partly in conjunction with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA). Juxta-articular fibrotic nodules may develop within a few months of the onset of ACA. Nodular, discoid morphoea-like, and widespread cutaneous fibroses in chronic Borrelia infection may be provoked by trauma, surgery or electromagnetic radiation. They respond well to antibiotic therapy. These lesions offer an in vivo model for studying the evolution of immunologically induced fibrosis.

The study of 9776 cases of spinal anesthesia carried out in the clinic and the results of the experiments on dogs have lead to the conclusion that respiratory arrest and drop of arterial pressure during spinal anesthesia result from the block of the peripheral conductors rather than from paralysis of bulbar centres. The artificial pulmonary ventilation constitutes the only effective means in combating respiratory depression in spinal anesthesia.
