Investigating Wrist Joint Position Sense and Hand Functions in Children With Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis With Wrist Involvement.

Comparing the wrist joint position sense and hand functions between children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and healthy controls, and determining possible relationships between these parameters in children with JIA were the aims of this study. Twenty children with polyarticular JIA with wrist involvement (JIAWrist+), 20 children with other subtypes of JIA without wrist involvement (JIAWrist-), and 20 healthy controls were included. Wrist joint position sense was evaluated by measuring joint repositioning error. Hand functions were assessed by using the Purdue Pegboard test, hand grip

Growing into your hand: the developmental trajectory of the body model.

We rely on accurate body representations to successfully interact with the environment. As adults, we rely on many years of experience with a body that has stayed relatively the same size. Children, however, go through periods of rapid growth and whether or not their body representation matches this physical growth is unknown. To address this question, we examined the developmental trajectory of the body model of the hand. The body model is the representation of our bodies that underlies position sense. We recruited a group of children (8-16 years) and a control group of young adults (18-26 ye

The effect of age, sex and a firm-textured surface on postural control.

In previous studies, the influence of plantar sensation has been examined using various textured surfaces with different stiffness materials to assess static balance. This study investigated the effects of a Firm Textured Surface (FTS) along with age and sex-related influences on postural control under different visual conditions. Forty subjects (20 elderly, 10 males, mean age 68.30, 10 females, mean age 68.00, and 20 young people, 10 males, mean age 25.45, 10 females, mean age 27.30) participated in this study maintained a quiet standing on FTS, foam and firm surfaces with eyes open and close

Joint position sense, motor imagery and tactile acuity in lateral elbow tendinopathy: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Impairments of sensorimotor function are evident in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET), although understanding of the mechanisms for this is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To determine if motor imagery, tactile acuity and wrist joint position sense (JPS) are impaired in participants with unilateral LET compared to controls, whether deficits are localised to the affected side, and whether deficits relate to severity of pain. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with control group. METHODS: 14 participants with unilateral LET of 6 weeks or longer and 14 matched control participants

The tightening parameters of the vibratory devices modify their disturbing postural effects.

The purpose was to specify the impact of two different forces exerted by vibratory devices on the Achilles tendon on postural balance. The postural balance of 13 participants was evaluated on a force platform in two 40 s bipedal stance conditions with closed eyes. Tendon vibrations (80 Hz) were triggered 10 s after the beginning of the postural evaluation and applied during 20 s. Two levels of the force exerted by the vibrators were calibrated using load cells to control the tightening parameters of the vibrators: a strong tightening (ST) condition at 45 N and a light tightening (LT) condition

On the Skill of Balancing While Riding a Bicycle.

Humans have ridden bicycles for over 200 years, yet there are no continuous measures of how skill differs between novice and expert. To address this knowledge gap, we measured the dynamics of human bicycle riding in 14 subjects, half of whom were skilled and half were novice. Each subject rode an instrumented bicycle on training rollers at speeds ranging from 1 to 7 m/s. Steer angle and rate, steer torque, bicycle speed, and bicycle roll angle and rate were measured and steering power calculated. A force platform beneath the roller assembly measured the net force and moment that the bicycle, r

Vestibular Function and Depersonalization/Derealization Symptoms.

Patients with an acquired sensory dysfunction may experience symptoms of detachment from self or from the environment, which are related primarily to nonspecific symptoms of common mental disorders and secondarily, to the specific sensory dysfunction. This is consistent with the proposal that sensory dysfunction could provoke distress and a discrepancy between the multi-sensory frame given by experience and the actual perception. Both vestibular stimuli and vestibular dysfunction can underlie unreal experiences. Vestibular afferents provide a frame of reference (linear and angular head acceler

Motion sickness: only one provocative conflict?

In reviewing the various forms of motion sickness, the classic sensory rearrangement theory has been redefined by demonstrating that only one type of conflict is necessary and sufficient to explain all different kinds of motion sickness. A mathematical description is provided from the summarizing statement that "All situations which provoke motion sickness are characterised by a condition in which the sensed vertical as determined on the basis of integrated information from the eyes, the vestibular system and the nonvestibular proprioceptors is at variance with the subjective vertical as expec

Exteroceptive and interoceptive stimuli in dystonia.

Some patients with torsion dystonia experience a dramatic increase or decrease in symptoms when performing specific activities. The activities that influence dystonic symptoms vary from person to person. An activity or sensory stimulus that reduces symptoms has been called a "sensory trick" or, in cervical dystonia, a "geste antagoniste." When a single activity induces symptoms of dystonia, the dystonia is called "task specific." We have discovered that in some patients, thinking about a sensory trick or task affects the dystonia in the same way as actually performing the activity. We present

Visual accommodation as a cue for size.

Accommodation micropsia is examined in the general context of ocular accommodation as a cue for object size. The nature and limits of accommodation micropsia and arguments dealing with the possible contribution of accommodation to the perception of size are reviewed. Literature on the anomalous myopias, the intermediate-resting hypothesis, and theories of ciliary muscle innervation is examined critically in so far as it bears on the accommodation-micropsia hypothesis. The anomalous myopias and evidence for the intermediate-resting hypothesis are well documented, but without a mechanism for pro

[Diagnosis and therapy of vertebrogenic vertigo].

Functional disorders of the cervical spine may lead to vertigenous symptoms. The typical pathological finding in these patients is a hyperlordotic position of the cervical spine. This causes functional problems of the C0/C1 and C1/C2 joints. X-rays show morphological changes of the vertebrae and may also point to functional disorders. Physiotherapy is the most important treatment modality and preventative measure in static dysbalance of the cervical spine. sometimes chiropractic therapy by an experienced manual therapist or carefully directed infiltration therapy is necessary.

Sensory feedback for limb prostheses in amputees.

Commercial prosthetic devices currently do not provide natural sensory information on the interaction with objects or movements. The subsequent disadvantages include unphysiological walking with a prosthetic leg and difficulty in controlling the force exerted with a prosthetic hand, thus creating health issues. Restoring natural sensory feedback from the prosthesis to amputees is an unmet clinical need. An optimal device should be able to elicit natural sensations of touch or proprioception, by delivering the complex signals to the nervous system that would be produced by skin, muscles and joi…

Traumatic partial hypopituitarism in a cat.

Traumatic hypopituitarism was diagnosed in an 11-month-old male neutered cat. The presenting complaints were polydipsia, polyuria and lethargy of three months' duration. Craniocerebral trauma, as a result of a road traffic accident, had preceded the onset of clinical signs by six weeks. Neurological examination revealed right-sided mydriasis, reduced visual and tactile left forelimb placing reflexes and decreased proprioception in both the left fore- and hindlimb. Initial laboratory findings included hypernatraemia, hyperchloraemia, mild azotaemia, eosinophilia and isosthenuria. Low basal cort…

Physiotherapy in vertigo.

Physiotherapy is often of great value in the treatment of vertigo. In patients with a vestibular loss the physiotherapy should be directed towards the enhancement of central compensation. The inflow of different sensory modalities, visual, proprioceptive and vestibular, should be exercised simultaneously for integration. In cases of orthopedic cervical vertigo, physiotherapy should be directed with caution towards the affected vertebral joints. In muscle tension cervical vertigo, the physiotherapist must include ergonomy and psychological factors in the vertigo treatment.

[Chronic instability of the ankle treated by reefing of the lateral ligament (author's transl)].

The authors have operated on 22 cases of chronic instability of the ankle. The anterior part of the lateral ligament was reinserted in the lateral malleolus. Only 18 patients were followed up. 15 had a good result, 2 had a recurrent sprain after trauma and one had a poor result. The authors consider that this technique, combined with proprioceptive rehabilitation of the peroneal muscles gives better results than ligamentoplasties using the peroneal tendons.
