In three patients an extremely small (3-7 mm) intrameatal acoustic neuroma was found by means of MRI scanning. The only symptoms were hearing loss and tinnitus of long standing (3-27 years). Acoustic neuromas are usually operated upon, as their intracranial extension may give rise to serious problems in the future. The slow progression of the tumour and the sparse pertinent literature data led to an expectative policy; surgery would be considered if follow-up MRI would indicate tumour growth.

The effects of NC-1300 on gastric acid and mucus glycoprotein secretion were investigated in pylorus-ligated (4 h) rats. NC-1300 (30 mg/kg, intraduodenally) significantly inhibited gastric acid concentration more than 90%. The agent did not affect the total mucus glycoprotein output in the gastric juice, but caused by about 1.5 times denser mucus glycoprotein secretion than that in the control group. In the present study we describe a Na+/H+ exchange system in FRTL-5 rat thyroid cells and its role in the regulation of intracellular pH (pHi). The pHi of these cells was measured in acidic medium (pH 6.5) using the equilibrium distribution of 14C-labeled 5,5'-dimethyl-oxazolidine-2,4-dione. The estimated pHi in 10 separate experiments was 7.30 +/- 0.01 (mean +/- SE). NMR proton spin-lattice (T1) and spin-spin (T2) relaxation times were measured ex vivo on Lewis lung carcinoma after in vivo single irradiation with an absorbed dose of 4 Gy. The results were compared to tumoural volume evolution, pathological examinations, and cell kinetic measurements. Tumour growth decreased between the third and the sixth day after irradiation while relaxation times, especially T1, is increased 2 days before the clinical recurrence of the tumour is observed. The effects of salicylate were examined on Na+/H+ exchange by isolated gastric mucosal surface cells loaded with H+ and resuspended in a buffered medium. Interaction of human adult methemoglobin with p-mercuribenzoate (pMB) was examined at 21 degrees C by monitoring the hyperfine-shifted proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of several high- and low-spin derivatives.
