The effect of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITMNs) on Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus seroconversion in pigs and humans was studied in Assam, Northeast India. A sharp reduction of seroconversion rate in human and pig was found in treated localities after intervention. A marked reduction was achieved in humans (risk ratio [RR] = 0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-0.49) and pigs (RR = 0.21, CI = 0.11-0.40) in the Kollolua locality where ITMNs were used on both humans and pigs compared with the other two area, Athabari and Rajmai, where ITMNs were covering only either humans or pigs.

Tick- and tsetse-borne diseases cost Africa approximately US$4-5 billion per year in livestock production-associated losses. The use of pyrethroid-treated cattle to control ticks and tsetse promises to be an increasingly important tool to counter this loss. However, uncontrolled use of this technology might lead to environmental damage, acaricide resistance in tick populations and a possible exacerbation of tick-borne diseases. Recent research to identify, quantify and to develop strategies to avoid these effects are highlighted.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate an observed epidemic of gynecomastia among Haitian refugees in US detention centers in 1981 and 1982.
METHODS: All identifiable environmental exposures were investigated for estrogenic and antiandrogenic activity.
RESULTS: A high incidence of gynecomastia was observed among Haitian refugees in five detention centers in the United States. Of 284 men screened, 20 (from 18 to 53 years old) demonstrated new-onset gynecomastia (Tanner stages 2 to 5) in June 1982. BACKGROUND: Insecticides in various formulations are indispensable for agricultural pest control and the prevention of vector-borne diseases. Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is a synergist widely used to enhance the effectiveness of insecticides, notably pyrethroids, by inhibiting the detoxifying cytochrome P450 enzymes, thus reducing the capacity of insects to metabolize and resist insecticides. Recent studies have revealed an unexpectedly weak enhancement of pyrethroid efficacy by PBO, which may have serious implications for insect control.
