The aim of present study was to assess the radioprotective effects of the local application of amifostine to treat acute buccal mucositis in guinea pigs. This study examines the efficacy and toxicity of two stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) dose regimens for treatment of early prostate cancer. Forty-one patients treated with 35 Gy were matched with 41 patients treated with 36.25 Gy. Both patient groups received SBRT in five fractions over five consecutive days using the CyberKnife. Each group had 37 low-risk patients and 4 intermediate-risk patients. OBJECTIVE: Three phase 1 clinical trials of a superpotent melanotropic peptide, melanotan-1 (MT-1, or [Nle(4)-D-Phe(7)]alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) were performed to demonstrate safety for MT-1 therapy combined with UV-B light or sunlight.

To understand better how complex interactions between environmental variables affect the energy balance of small diurnal animals, we studied the effects of the absence and presence of 950 W m(-)(2) simulated solar radiation combined with wind speeds ranging from 0. 25 to 1.00 m s(-)(1) on the metabolic rate and body temperature of the round-tailed ground squirrel Spermophilus tereticaudus. As wind speed increased from 0.25 to 1.00 m s(-)(1), metabolic heat production increased by 0.94 W in the absence of solar radiation and by 0.98 W in the presence of 950 W m(-)(2) simulated solar radiation.

The frequencies of translocations and dicentrics detected by "chromosome painting" in lymphocytes were estimated in 115 healthy donors and in 273 people exposed to uncontrolled irradiation at low doses 1-4 years ago. Age responses of both types of exchanges at the age range from 3 to 85 years fit to quadratic model. The frequency of translocations grew faster with age than the frequency of dicentrics. The yields of stable exchanges in exposed people was significantly higher than those in control donors of corresponding ages.

AIM: Assessment of efficacy of combined treatment of chronic bronchitis (CB) in subjects exposed to radiation after the Chernobyl accident including nonpharmacological (NP) modalities vs conventional chemotherapy (CT).

PURPOSE: The aim of this nonrandomized study was to assess effects against radiation-induced enteropathy by constructing an omental pedicle hammock, thus isolating the small bowel outside the pelvis.

A study was made of thiamin content of the skeletal muscles and livers of pork, chicken and beef after gamma-irradiation. gamma-Radiation from a 137Cs source was used to irradiate the samples with doses of 0, 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 kGy at 2 degrees C. Samples were also titrated with dichlorophenol-indophenol to determine the reducing capacity of the tissues. Patients treated for prostate cancer from 1975-1982 were reviewed to assess if pre-irradiation transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) predisposed to the formation of post treatment urethral strictures or bladder neck contractures.
