Adipose-derived stem cells alleviate radiation-induced dermatitis by suppressing apoptosis and downregulating cathepsin F expression.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced dermatitis is a serious side effect of radiotherapy, and very few effective treatments are currently available for this condition. We previously demonstrated that apoptosis is an important feature of radiation-induced dermatitis and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are one of the most promising types of stem cells that have a protective effect on acute radiation-induced dermatitis. Cathepsin F (CTSF) is a recently discovered protein that plays an important role in apoptosis. In this study, we investigated whether ADSCs affect chronic radiation-induced dermatitis

Protection of sildenafil citrate hydrogel against radiation-induced skin wounds.

Radiation induced skin wound/dermatitis is one of the common side effects of radiotherapy or interventional radiobiology. In order to combat impaired healing of radiation wounds, alternative therapy to use sildenafil citrate (SC) topical hydrogel as a therapeutic option was proposed that has known to enhance nitric oxide in wounds. Our aim was to develop a radiation induced skin wound model and to investigate the wound healing efficacy of 5% SC hydrogel formulation in Sprague-Dawley rats. In the present study, the radiation wound inducing dose was optimized using a multi-dose localized γ-radia

Radiation-induced Skin Toxicity in Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review of Randomized Trials.

Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of radiotherapy. Radiation dermatitis has been investigated for decades, and many approaches have been proposed to limit its incidence and severity. The purpose of the present systematic review was to summarize the approaches and findings of studies testing various methods for management of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients. Medline, Cochrane, and Embase were searched for studies pertaining to radiation-induced skin toxicity in breast cancer patients. The search results were limited to randomized trials of external beam radiotherapy con

Management of acute skin toxicity with Hypericum perforatum and neem oil during platinum-based concurrent chemo-radiation in head and neck cancer patients.

Acute skin toxicity is a frequent finding during combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy in head and neck cancer patients. Its timely and appropriate management is crucial for both oncological results and patient's global quality of life. We herein report clinical data on the use of Hypericum perforatum and neem oil in the treatment of acute skin toxicity during concurrent chemo-radiation for head and neck cancer. A consecutive series of 50 head and neck cancer patients undergoing concomitant radio-chemotherapy with weekly cisplatin was analyzed. Treatment with Hypericum perforatum and neem oil

Photobiomodulation for the management of radiation dermatitis: the DERMIS trial, a pilot study of MLS(®) laser therapy in breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of photobiomodulation using MLS(®) laser therapy (LT) in the management of acute radiation dermatitis (RD). METHODS: We compared two successive groups of breast cancer patients undergoing identical radiotherapy regimens post-lumpectomy. Both groups received our standard skin care but the second group received six additional LT sessions (beam area 19.635 cm(2), 0.168 W/cm(2), 4 J/cm(2)), starting at fraction 20 of radiotherapy (control and LT group, N = 41 and 38, respectively). The clinical outcomes were the seve

[Quality of life in individuals exposed to cesium-137 in Goiânia, Goiás State, Brazil].

This cross-sectional observational study in Goiânia, Goiás State, Brazil in a sample of 56% of 111 individuals exposed to cesium-137 aimed to evaluate their quality of life and associations with socio-demographic factors. The study used the WHOQOL-BREF and the Monitoring System for Radiation Victims. Participants were divided according to international criteria: Group I - radiation dermatitis and / or cytogenetic dosimetry above 20 rads (n = 33) and Group II - cytogenetic dosimetry ≤ 20 rads (n = 29), totaling 62 subjects. Among the WHOQOL-BREF domains, environment showed the highest mean scor

Suffering and death among early American Roentgenologists: the power of remotely anatomizing the living body in fin de siècle America.

This manuscript has two aims. First, I extend the historiography on early American roentgenology that demonstrates that dozens of early adopters knowingly suffered intense pain, mutilation, and death for the sake of the X-ray. The objective is to pinpoint as precisely as possible when and to what extent the roentgenologists knew of the life-threatening risks of X-ray exposure. Second, I articulate a partial explanation for their behavior that is rooted in the social power of remotely anatomizing the living body in fin de siècle American scientific and medical culture.

Noninvasive radiation burn diagnosis using speckle phenomenon with a fractal approach to processing.

Radiation burns account for the vast majority of damage by accidental radiation exposure. They are characterized by successive and unpredictable inflammatory bursts that are preceded by a clinically latent postirradiation period. Diagnosis and prognosis of the clinical course of radiation burns have proven to be a difficult task. In a classical clinical setting, no technique can distinguish irradiated versus healthy skin during the clinically latent period, hence development of new tools is required. This work describes a noninvasive technique based on speckle phenomenon, designed to support r

The prevention and management of acute skin reactions related to radiation therapy: a systematic review and practice guideline.

GOALS OF WORK: To develop a practice guideline report on the questions: What are the optimal methods to prevent acute skin reactions (occurring within the first 6 months of irradiation) related to radiation therapy? What are the optimal methods to manage acute skin reactions related to radiation therapy? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cancer Care Ontario's Supportive Care Guidelines Group (SCGG) conducted a systematic review of literature on this topic. Evidence-based recommendations were formulated to guide clinical decision making, and a formal external review process was conducted to validate the

Increased dermal angiogenesis after low-intensity laser therapy for a chronic radiation ulcer determined by a video measuring system.

Acute and chronic radiation-induced dermatitis can occur after high doses of ionizing radiation of the skin. We describe a patient with a long-lasting radiotherapy-induced ulcer that healed after low-intensity laser therapy. A video measuring system was used to determine the number of dermal vessels in the ulcer before and after laser treatment. We found a statistically significant increase in the number of dermal vessels after low-intensity laser therapy in both the central and marginal parts of the ulcer compared with its pretreatment status.

Atypical cells in radiation dermatitis express factor XIIIa.

Dendritic cells that express factor XIIIa are present in the normal dermis and are increased in a variety of pathologic conditions. Atypical dermal cells are often seen in biopsy specimens of skin that has been previously irradiated. We sought to determine whether the atypical dermal cells in chronic radiation dermatitis express factor XIIIa. We employed standard immunohistochemical techniques with antibodies to factor XIIIa and CD34 to study 16 biopsy samples showing changes of radiation dermatitis. All cases showed diffuse positive cytoplasmic staining of atypical dermal cells with antibody

Electronical recording and evaluation of acute radiation morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Relatively uniform documentation systems are used for recording of acute side effects in oncology. Object of this work is to illustrate the applicability of electronic data bases for registration and evaluation of acute side effects in radiation therapy. METHODS: Based on topographic documentation sheets, an electronic data base was developed for each major topographic site. Besides general patient related parameters (TNM, previous chemotherapy, surgical interventions, intercurrent diseases and more), the kind and the degree of acute radiation related side effects are documented f
