Routine isotropic computed tomography scanning of chest: value of coronal and sagittal reformations.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the usefulness of coronal and sagittal reformations from isotropic chest computed tomography (CT) examinations. METHODS: A total of 30 chest CT examinations were reconstructed into 2 sets of axial source images: 0.9-mm slice width with 0.45-mm reconstruction interval (isotropic) and 4-mm slices with 3-mm reconstruction interval. The isotropic dataset was reformatted into coronal and sagittal stacks with 4-mm slices. Three readers reviewed the image sets with 4-mm slice widths. Coronal and sagittal reformations were compared at the same sitting to axial images

Infections of the neck leading to descending necrotizing mediastinitis: Role of multi-detector row computed tomography.

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis is an acute, polymicrobial infection of the mediastinum, originating from odontogenic, oropharyngeal and cervical infections. Anatomical continuity of the fascial spaces between the neck and the mediastinum leads to an occasional mediastinal extension of deep neck infection as a serious sequela. An understanding of the anatomy of the deep spaces of the neck and familiarity with the imaging findings in descending necrotizing mediastinitis may allow rapid diagnosis and treatment of this rare and life-threatening complication of deep neck space infection. In t

Three-dimensional CT of the genitourinary tract.

The applications of three-dimensional (3D) CT techniques encompass a spectrum from calculus disease to preoperative planning. With proper selection of display windows and levels, accurate measurement of stone size can be achieved, along with volumetric information. A CT scan with reconstruction may help guide the direction of an endopyelotomy incision away from crossing vessels. The benefits of 3D CT in the evaluation of living renal donors include lower cost and decreased patient morbidity. In renal allograft recipients and other patients, the study may be used to investigate hypertension. Al

Comparative radiation dose analysis in pediatric high-pitch cardiac CTA using photon-counting versus energy-integrating detector CT.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown improved image quality in pediatric cardiac imaging using photon-counting detector CT (PCDCT). However, these studies did not evaluate image quality and radiation dose when utilizing the full spectral capabilities of PCDCT scanners. The full spectral capability of PCDCT scanners allows the generation of the entire array of mono-energetic reconstructions, virtual non-contrast (VNC) images, and iodine maps, which have potential advantages in evaluating complex congenital heart disease. For example, following complex congenital cardiac repairs, when disting
