The Oculocardiac Reflex: A Review.

BACKGROUND: A typical oculocardiac reflex (OCR) is a moderate trigemino-vagal bradycardia elicited by tension on an extraocular muscle (EOM) during strabismus surgery; however, many other orbital stimuli can elicit cardiac slowing including retinopathy of prematurity examination. METHODS: World literature related to trigeminovagal and oculocardiac reflex covering over 15,000 patients including 51 randomized clinical trials and case reports are analyzed and reviewed. Under an ongoing observational trial in Alaska, anesthetic, patient and surgical influences on routine strabismus surgery using

Effect of different motor skills training on motor control network in the frontal lobe and basal ganglia.

During human motor control, the three pathways of motor control coordinate to complete human response and inhibition control, so whether different types of motor skills training will affect the three pathways of motor control is the main question in this study. Magnetic resonance imaging was combined with behavioural evaluation to analyse the effects of different special training sessions on the motor control network of the frontal lobe and basal ganglia and to explore the role of the central nervous system in the regulation of motor behaviour. A Stop-signal paradigm was used to measure reacti

Pathophysiology of corticobasal degeneration: Insights from neurophysiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have applied electrophysiological techniques to physiologically characterize corticobasal degeneration (CBD). METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of these studies and reviewed all 25 identified articles. RESULTS: Conventional electroencephalography (EEG) is usually normal even in the late stages of disease. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) with spectral analysis revealed mainly lateralized abnormalities, such as an increase of slow wave activity and occasionally the occurrence of sharp waves, and a significant increase of coherence between left parietal-ri

Automated head motion system improves reliability and lessens operator dependence for head impulse testing of vestibular reflexes.

Deficiency of the eye-stabilizing vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a defining feature in multiple diseases of the vestibular labyrinth, which comprises the inner ear's sensors of head rotation, translation and orientation. Diagnosis of these disorders is facilitated by observation and measurement of eye movements during and after head motion. The video head impulse test has recently garnered interest as a clinical diagnostic assessment of vestibular dysfunction. In typical practice, it involves use of video-oculography goggles to measure eye movements while a clinician examiner grasps the subj

Hypersensitivity of vagal pulmonary C-fibers induced by increasing airway temperature in ovalbumin-sensitized rats.

Our recent study has shown that hyperventilation of humidified warm air (HWA) triggered cough and reflex bronchoconstriction in patients with mild asthma. We suggested that a sensitizing effect on bronchopulmonary C-fibers by increasing airway temperature was involved, but direct evidence was lacking. This study was carried out to test the hypothesis that HWA enhances the pulmonary C-fiber sensitivity in Brown-Norway rats sensitized with ovalbumin (Ova). In anesthetized rats, isocapnic hyperventilation of HWA for 3 min rapidly elevated airway temperature to a steady state of 41.7°C. Immediatel

rTMS-induced virtual lesion of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) alters the control of reflexive shifts of social attention triggered by pointing hands.

In highly social groups like human and non-human primates, gaze and pointing cues are fundamentally important for directing the attention of conspecifics. Although neuroimaging studies indicate that shifts of attention triggered by observation of social cues activate the onlookers׳ fronto-parietal cortices, information on whether these regions play a causative role in orienting and re-orienting of social attention is lacking. To advance our understanding of this, we used event-related repetitive dual pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to interfere with neural activity in the right frontal

Startle myoclonus induced by Lyme neuroborreliosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The normal startle response is a form of physiological myoclonus. Its anatomic origin is probably the brain stem. Pathologic startles are defined as reproducible exaggerated startle responses to trivial and not surprising stimuli. Symptomatic forms of an exaggerated startle response can be due to a variety of brain stem disorders. We have, however, found scant data about an exaggerated startle reflex induced by Lyme neuroborreliosis. We therefore report the case of a patient with this unusual presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year old Caucasian man presented with a two-week

Dementia from the ABCD1 mutation c.1415-1416delAG in a female carrier.

OBJECTIVES: Progressive dementia is a rare phenotypic feature of female X-ALD carriers. Even rarer is the additional presence of further risk factors for dementia, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hepatopathy. We report a unique female X-ALD carrier presenting with severe, progressive dementia, paraspasticity, sphincteric dysfunction, and multisystem disease. CASE REPORT: A 79 years-old female with a history of strumectomy, diabetes, hepatopathy, hypothyroidism, arterial hypertension, hiatal hernia, left retinal ablation, ovariectomy, hysterectomy, osteoporosis, bilateral hip endoprosthe

In vivo imaging and quantitative evaluation of the rat retinal nerve fiber layer using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.

PURPOSE: To determine whether scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) is useful for in vivo imaging and quantitative evaluation of rat retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) using an optic nerve crush model. METHODS: The optic nerve of the right eye was crushed intraorbitally with a clip. The left eye served as the untreated control. Fundus images of both eyes were recorded by SLO using an argon blue laser before and 1, 2, and 4 weeks after optic nerve crush. The focused plane was sequentially moved by changing the refractive values in the SLO setting. The range of refractive values (DeltaF) in which t

The activation pattern in normal humans during suppression, imagination and performance of saccadic eye movements.

The distribution of activated cerebral regions was examined in nine normal subjects during four different eye movement-related conditions: (1) fixation-fixation on a central light emitting diode; (2) saccadic suppression-fixation on a diode in the presence of flashing lateral targets; (3) reflexive/volitional saccades-performance of overt eye movements to two laterally lit targets and back to the centre; and (4) imagined saccades-imagining, but not performing, the same eye movements. The regional neural activity was measured indirectly using repetitive bolus injections of oxygen-15-labelled wa

A retrospective study of cavernous sinus syndrome in 4 dogs and 8 cats.

Cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) is characterized by deficits in more than one of the cranial nerves (CN) that traverse the cavernous sinus at the base of the cranial vault: CN III (oculomotor), IV (trochlear), VI (abducens), and the first two branches of CN V (trigeminal). Records from 4 dogs and 8 cats with CSS diagnosed over a 14-year period were reviewed. The most common clinical signs were ophthalmoparesis or ophthalmoplegia, mydriasis with no direct or consensual pupillary light reflexes, ptosis, decreased corneal sensation, and decreased retractor oculi reflex. All cats had initial signs

Pharmacological subtraction of the sensory controls over grasping in rats.

Catecholamine-depletion-induced catalepsy isolates and leaves intact an aggregate of allied reflexes (e.g., righting, standing still, bracing, and clinging) which involve all the body and limb segments in defending stable static equilibrium. Because other movement subsystems (locomotion, orienting, scanning, directed use of mouth or forepaws) are depressed, such animals cling in a vertical position for an abnormally long period of time. As a consequence, grasping reflexes may be studied independently of other responses. Haloperidol, a dopamine antagonist, abolishes visually elicited reaching a

Protective effect of crocin on cuprizone-induced model of multiple sclerosis in mice.

Crocin is the main bioactive components of the saffron which has positive role in the nervous system; however, its neuroprotective activity is not fully elicited. So, the aim of the current study was to determine effects of the crocin on reflexive motor and anti-depressive behaviors as well as serum and brain tissue antioxidant activities in cuprizone-induced (CPZ) model of multiple sclerosis (MS) mice. Forty male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned into 4 groups. Mice in the control group were received normal diet. In group 2, mice received normal diet and orally received crocin (100 mg/kg) 3

Characterisation of c-Fos expression in the central nervous system of mice following right atrial injections of the 5-HT3 receptor agonist phenylbiguanide.

Cardiopulmonary receptors relay signals to the central nervous system via vagal and spinal visceral afferents. To date there are no detailed topographical studies in mice indicating the distribution of central neurones activated following stimulation of cardiopulmonary afferents. In anaesthetised mice, we injected the 5-HT(3) receptor agonist phenylbiguanide (PBG), a drug that is known to stimulate cardiopulmonary afferent C-fibres, into the right atrium of the heart and mapped c-Fos expression within specific regions of the central nervous system. Intra-atrial injection of PBG produced a refl

The effect of midline petrous apex lesions on tests of afferent and efferent auditory function.

OBJECTIVES: Historically, audiological procedures have focused on the assessment of the afferent (ascending) cochlear-VIIIth nerve system and have, for the most part, ignored the efferent (descending) auditory system. We report afferent and efferent auditory test results for two cases with a cholesterol cyst of the right petrous apex; one lesion involves the afferent segment of the auditory system, and the second lesion involves both the afferent and efferent segments of the auditory system. These "natural experiments" provide a unique opportunity to study the effect of a space-occupying lesio

[An adult case of recurrent myelopathy presenting with monoplegia following asthmatic attacks].

A 22-year-old woman noticed an acute onset muscle weakness in her right leg after an asthmatic attack. A neurological examination showed moderate muscle weakness from the right iliopsoas muscle to the toe muscles, a decreased deep tendon reflex in her right lower limb and mild hypesthesia in her right L2-S1 segments. Needle EMG revealed fibrillation potentials in the right gastrocnemius muscle and a positive sharp wave in the right anterior tibialis muscle. The findings of motor nerve conduction studies and sensory nerve conduction studies were normal. The lesion was considered to be located a

[A case of arterio-venous malformation associated with agenesis of unilateral internal carotid artery (author's transl)].

A case of arterio-venous malformation (AVM) at the right parietal area in association with agenesis of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) is described. A 27-year-old male complained of severe headache and vomiting on September 27th in 1980. He lost his consciousness and became stuporous within several minutes after the ictus. He was then transferred to Kurume University Hospital. On admission, he was semicomatose, anisocoria and left hemiparesis marked in the lower limbs, and bilateral Babinski reflex were noted. A emergency CT scan revealed a round high density area suggesting intracerebr

Staged management of a Tile C3 pelvic ring injury with bilateral sacroiliac disruption and T-shaped sacral fracture.

We present the case of a 16-year-old female polytrauma patient who sustained a rare and highly unstable pelvic ring injury following a high-energy motor vehicle collision with partial ejection. The injury pattern was classified as Tile C3, combining a right anterior crescent-type fracture with anterior sacroiliac (SI) joint dislocation, a left-sided Denis II sacral fracture, a distal T-shaped sacral fracture, and bilateral pubic rami fractures. Neurological deficits included right L5 and left S1-S2 involvement. Initial management adhered to damage control principles, including pelvic binder ap

A case with prolonged headache after COVID-19 vaccination and later developed Bell's palsy.

PURPOSE: During COVID-19 pandemic, the authorization of emergent usage of new vaccine has raised suspicions and doubts about potential adverse events related to vaccination. Among the reported adverse events related to ChAdOx1/nCoV-19 vaccine, facial paralysis did not have an incident rate higher than natural occurrence like mRNA vaccines. However, temporal association between vaccination and facial palsy have been documented in several studies. Here, we report a case of an otherwise healthy 23-year-old Taiwanese female who experienced prolonged headache since the second day postvaccination an
