Attitude and beliefs of Nigerian undergraduates to spectacle wear.

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive error is a common cause of preventable visual impairment. Glasses are the cheapest and commonest form of correction of refractive errors. To achieve this, patients must exhibit good compliance to spectacle wear. Patients' attitude and perception of glasses and eye health could affect compliance to spectacle wear. OBJECTIVE: To determine the attitude and beliefs of Nigerian undergraduates to spectacle wear. METHOD: A cross sectional study of 500 undergraduates of the University of Benin, Nigeria. Age range was from 18 to 30 years, mean age 23 ± 2.7 years. Th

Hemiretinal form deprivation: evidence for local control of eye growth and refractive development in infant monkeys.

PURPOSE: To determine whether refractive development in primates is mediated by local retinal mechanisms, the authors examined the effects of hemiretinal form deprivation on ocular growth and the pattern of peripheral refractions in rhesus monkeys. METHODS: Beginning at approximately 3 weeks of age, nine infant monkeys were reared wearing monocular diffuser lenses that eliminated form vision in the nasal field (nasal field diffuser [NFD]). Control data were obtained from the nontreated fellow eyes, 24 normal monkeys, and 19 monkeys treated with full-field diffusers. Refractive development was

Early-onset accommodative esotropia.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of accommodative esotropia with onset by 6 months of age; to determine if the presence or absence of characteristics usually associated with infantile esotropia can help in the diagnosis; and to determine if antiaccommodative therapy is adequate treatment for the esotropia. METHODS: The charts of 100 patients with infantile esotropia, seen over a 2-year period (September 1995 to September 1997), were reviewed. We identified those with at least 2.25 diopters (D) of hyperopia and determined the presence of large angle esotropia (> 30 to 40 prism diopters [del

[Why and how to correct hypermetropia?].

How and why to prescribe an optical correction in hyperopia is described. The reasons for prescribing are closely related to the visual risk of not doing so (amblyopia, lack of stereopsy, strabismus), to the patient's complains and history as well as to his ophthalmological examination. How to correct hyperopia depends on the presence or absence of squint and on the amount of ametropia.
