Breathing abnormalities in animal models of Rett syndrome a female neurogenetic disorder.

A characteristic feature of Rett syndrome (RTT) is abnormal breathing accompanied by several other neurological and cognitive disorders. Since RTT rodent models became available, studies have begun shedding insight into the breathing abnormalities at behavioral, cellular and molecular levels. Defects are found in several groups of brainstem neurons involved in respiratory control, and potential neural mechanisms have been suggested. The findings in animal models are helpful in therapeutic strategies for people with RTT with respect to lowering sudden and unexpected death, preventing secondary

Inhalational and dermal injury due to explosion of calcium hypochlorite.

Calcium hypochlorite is a yellow-white powder widely used as a disinfectant in swimming pools. It releases chlorine gas when added to water and can cause respiratory effects. Dermal and eye injury can occur because of the caustic nature of chlorine. We report a case of chlorine toxicity and burns on a man's face due to the explosion of calcium hypochlorite while he was mixing it into the water.

Perioperative management of thymectomy.

Thymoma is the most frequent type of tumor in the anterior-superior mediastinum. The presentation of thymomas is variable; most are asymptomatic and others present themselves with local compression syndrome or parathymic syndrome; rarely thymomas appear as an acute emergency. Surgery is the treatment of choice for thymic tumors and complete resection is the most important prognostic factor. Surgery with adjuvant radiation is recommended for invasive thymoma. The anaesthetic management of patients with mediastinal thymoma undergoing thymectomy is associated with several risks related to potenti

Respiratory complications of obesity.

Obesity is known to be a major risk factor of a whole range of cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory disorders. It has been recognised that the pattern of regional fat distribution plays an important role in the pre-disposition of obese subjects to certain obesity-related complications. Derangement of parameters of lung function is determined to a large extent by the quantity and distribution of excess body fat with its potential to interfere with the mechanics of pulmonary physiology. Clinical, laboratory and epidemiological observations have established links between obesity and several

Respiratory variability and psychological well-being in schoolchildren.

Among the relations between respiration and psychological state, associations with respiratory variability have been contradictory. In this study, respiration was measured noninvasively in 162 children with a mean age of 11 years (from 9 to 13). They completed a battery of psychological tests. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM or LISREL) revealed a model that fit the data well (chi 2 = 88.201, df = 79, p = .224). In this model, respiratory variability was positively related to anger-in and negatively to negative fear of failure and neurotic complaints. Respiration rate was positively related t

Application of singing techniques for the treatment of dysphonia.

Management of voice disorders requires careful examination of vocal control and compensation, with exercises designed to improve efficient compensation while reducing effects of pathology on vocal production. Specific singing exercises have been proven to be beneficial in the resolution and compensation for pathology. Detailed assessment and intervention strategies are outlined from the perspective of the vocologist, who specializes in combining vocal arts with voice therapy.

[Respiratory medicine in geriatrics. A cultural niche of relevant theoretical and practical importance].

Respiratory medicine in the elderly represents a topic of increasing interest in the developed countries, because of its peculiar clinical and therapeutical implications. In this respect, a deeper knowledge of the biology and physiology of aging lung is desirable: namely, the age-related immunological and structural changes involving the respiratory system do influence clinical presentation and response to the treatment in older people. A better understanding of the pharmacology in the elderly which is recognized to be different for several aspects from that of the general population, is manda

A comparison of swallowing during apnea and periodic breathing in premature infants.

Periodic breathing and apnea are two forms of ventilatory instability which are commonly observed in premature infants. This study was undertaken to characterize the pattern of swallowing during apnea and compare this pattern to that present during breathing. We assessed the frequency and distribution of swallows during the respiratory pauses of apnea and periodic breathing in 22 premature infants birth weight 1.2 +/- 0.2 kg, postconceptional age 34 +/- 2 wk. Twelve infants had apnea and 10 exhibited periodic breathing. During sleep the pharyngeal phase of swallowing was detected by a catheter

Pulmonary sequelae and lung repair in survivors of the adult respiratory distress syndrome.

The high in-hospital mortality of ARDS has not diminished over the past 10 years, despite improvements in supportive intensive care. Much of the mortality arises from infections, particularly sepsis and pneumonia, and from organ failure, especially kidney failure. The rapid advances in understanding the interlocking pathophysiologic mechanisms of ARDS have not yet been translated into therapeutic trials of new methods for diminishing the injury or for stimulating normal repair. In part, this is because it is difficult to predict which high-risk patients will develop ARDS and then intervene ear

Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with intrahepatic cholestasis and respiratory disease: a case report.

In an 8-year-old boy, the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) was associated with protracted intrahepatic cholestasis and ultimately fatal respiratory disease. No precipitating factors of SJS were identified, but a Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was suspected. The appearance of jaundice on the seventh day of illness was preceded by the prescription of erythromycin ethyl succinate, but intrahepatic cholestasis has never before been associated with this derivative of erythromycin. It is suggested that there may exist a subtype of SIS with severe hepato-pulmonary pathology.
