PURPOSE: Retinal ischemia and neovascularization (NV) are important components of many retinal disorders. To facilitate further investigation of retinal ischemia and neovascularization, we sought to develop a reproducible in vivo experimental model of venous occlusion by photodynamic thrombosis in rats.
METHODS: After anesthesia, 27 eyes of pigmented rats received an intraperitoneal injection of 0.2 ml of, 10% sodium fluorescein 15 minutes prior to laser treatment. With a blue-green argon laser, selected venous sites next to the optic nerve head were photocoagulated indirectly with a 78 diopt

OBJECTIVE: Peripapillary pachychoroid syndrome (PPS) is a recently described syndrome belonging to the pachychoroid disease spectrum (PDS) group. Our aim is to demonstrate with PPS, the presence of a venous collateral circulation which joins the peripapillary choroidal venous system with the central retinal vein via the circulation of the prelaminar region. This collateral circulation reduces venous congestion of the nasal choroid secondary to outflow obstruction through the vortex veins or the choroidopial veins. It is also our intention to demonstrate with a retrospective analysis, the stages o…

We report the case of an immunocompetent 78-year-old woman who developed cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis after a single intravitreous injection of triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA). Review of medical records. The patient with macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion developed peripheral retinitis with hemorrhagic and inflammatory vascular sheathing 3 months after IVTA. A presumptive diagnosis of viral retinitis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the aqueous humor tap. The PCR test was positive for CMV DNA. The patient slowly responded to intravenous ganciclovir an…

Amaurosis fugax and retinal artery occlusion are mainly caused by emboli originating from the carotid arteries and the heart. Ischemic ophthalmopathy is the result of severe carotid or ophthalmic artery stenosis. Retinal vein occlusions probably develop if the venous outflow is hampered or if blood viscosity is increased. Optic nerve infarction is now regarded as a localized disease of the small vessels. In all circulatory disorders of the retina and the optic nerve a careful medical and neurologic-angiologic work-up is mandatory. For arterial occlusions of the retina or the optic nerve, no th…

We report the case of an asymptomatic unilateral pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy (PPRCA) in a 43-year-old patient. The right eye showed chorioretinal atrophy with bone-spicule-like pigmentations along the retinal veins. Visual acuity was 20 / 20 and perimetry revealed scotomas correlating to the chorioretinal atrophy. Electrophysiological examination showed decreased signals in ERG and EOG. Fundus autofluorescence and angiography findings are presented. Pathogenetically, a classification as hereditary retinal dystrophy (as in retinitis pigmentosa) as well as a post-inflammatory re…

Disorders of retinal vascular growth and function are responsible for vision loss in a variety of diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity and retinal artery or vein occlusion. Over the past decade, a new signaling pathway that controls retinal vascular development has emerged from the study of inherited disorders - in both humans and mice - that are characterized by retinal hypovascularization. This pathway utilizes a glial-derived extracellular ligand, Norrin, that acts on a transmembrane receptor, Frizzled4, a coreceptor, Lrp5, a

A 76-year-old man developed blurred vision, and cerebral angiography disclosed an anterior skull base dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) supplied by both ethmoidal branches of the ophthalmic arteries and draining through a single cortical vein. Selective catheterization of both ophthalmic arteries distal to the origin of the central retinal arteries and occlusion the fistula feeders with injections of n-butyl cyanoacrylate glue led to complete occlusion of the fistula with preservation of retinal perfusion. The visual symptoms are attributed to impaired retinal perfusion as the result of a ste

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic tools have been accepted in ophthalmology. The use of retinal images, such as fundus photographs, is a promising approach for the development of AI-based diagnostic platforms. Retinal pathologies usually occur in a broad spectrum of eye diseases, including neovascular or dry age-related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, macular hole, retinal vein occlusions, and diabetic retinopathy. Here, we report a fundus image-based AI model for differential diagnosis of retinal diseases. We clas…

UNLABELLED: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a multifactorial disease and the main cause of visual impairment and blindness in premature neonates. The inner retina has been considered the primary region affected in ROP, but choroidal vascular degeneration and progressive outer retinal dysfunctions have also been observed. This review focuses on observations regarding neurovascular dysfunctions in both the inner and outer immature retina, the mechanisms and the neuronal-derived factors implicated in the development of ROP, as well potential therapeutic avenues for this disorder.
CONCLUSION:

PURPOSE: To understand the pathophysiology of central serous chorioretinopathy or bullous retinal detachment in patients under systemic corticosteroid treatment. Little is understood about the mechanism of the development of serous retinal detachment.
METHODS: Three patients who had developed central serous chorioretinopathy or bullous retinal detachment during systemic corticosteroid administration were examined by fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography.
RESULTS: Indocyanine green angiography revealed dilated choroidal veins, delayed choroidal filling, intrachoroidal hype

A method was determined for fluorescein angiography of the ocular fundus of the laboratory Beagle, using a portable fluorescein fundus camera. A 10% solution of sodium fluorescein was injected by a syringe pump in the right cephalic vein of each dog. Acepromazine maleate (0.5 mg/kg, IV) with ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg, IM) provided chemical restraint. Of the 10-, 25-, and 50-mg/kg dosages of fluorescein, 25 mg/kg permitted satisfactory fluorescence of the choroidal and retinal vasculature and the recirculation phase. High-speed color film permitted good quality photography of the tapetal
