Evaluating the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of the effects of Trichoderma harzianum T15 against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease, caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, devastates pine ecosystems. As a well-known biocontrol fungus, Trichode … m and support developing new agents. RESULTS: We isolated and identified T. harzianum T15 from the rhizosphere soil of Pinus koraiensis. Following nematode death, the body darkened and the cuticle ruptured. T15 mycelium penetrated the nematode cuticle while releasing volatile toxin (phthalates and terpenoids). Trichoderma harzianum killed nematodes through b …

Biocontrol of Rice Seed-Associated Fungal Pathogens Using Green Synthesis Approaches.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major cereal crop that balances the food demand of the worldwide population. The crop quality drops daily due to th … ficant antifungal activity against Aspergillus strains. Moreover, Trichoderma was isolated from the rhizosphere of rice fields and showed a surprising antifungal effect against A. terreus, A. niger, and A. flavus. The current study successfully revealed environment-friendly and cost-effective green synthesizing approaches for analyzing biocontrol potential ag …

Acinetobacter calcoaceticus CSY-P13 Mitigates Stress of Ferulic and p-Hydroxybenzoic Acids in Cucumber by Affecting Antioxidant Enzyme Activity and Soil Bacterial Community.

Ferulic acid (FA) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) are main phenolic compounds accumulated in rhizosphere of continuously cropped cucumber, causing stress in plants. Microbial degradation of a mixture of FA and PHBA is not well understood in soil. We isolated a strain CSY-P13 of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, inoculated it into soil to protect cucumber from FA and PHBA stress, and explored a mechanism underlying the protection. CSY-P13 effectively degraded a mixture of FA and PHBA in culture solution under conditions of 39.37°C, pH 6.97, and 21.59 g L-1 potassium dihydrogen phosphate, giving ris…

Assessment of bioavailable organic phosphorus in tropical forest soils by organic acid extraction and phosphatase hydrolysis.

Soil organic phosphorus contributes to the nutrition of tropical trees, but is not accounted for in standard soil phosphorus tests. Plants a … total P 86-429 mg P kg- 1) were extracted with 2 mM citric acid (i.e., 10 μmol g- 1, approximating rhizosphere concentrations) adjusted to soil pH in a 4:1 solution to soil ratio for 1 h. Three phosphatase enzymes were then added to the soil extract to determine the forms of hydrolysable organic phosphorus. Total phosphorus extracted by the procedure ranged …

The secreted purple acid phosphatase isozymes AtPAP12 and AtPAP26 play a pivotal role in extracellular phosphate-scavenging by Arabidopsis thaliana.

Extensive soil P reserves exist in the form of organic P … 6 facilitate the acclimation of Arabidopsis to nutritional Pi deficiency by: (i) functioning in the rhizosphere to scavenge P(i) from the soil's accessible P(o) pool, while (ii) recycling P(i) from endogenous phosphomonoesters that have been leaked into cell walls from the cytoplasm. Thus, AtPAP12 and AtPAP26 are promising targets for improving crop P-use eff …

Investigation of biogeochemical controls on the formation, uptake and accumulation of methylmercury in rice paddies in the vicinity of a coal-fired power plant and a municipal solid waste incinerator in Taiwan.

Synergistic remediation of cadmium and BDE-209 co-contaminated soil using Solanum nigrum assisted by Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and citric acid.

Co-contamination of cadmium (Cd) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil is common, posing serious ecological and health risks. Simultaneous remediation of both pollutants using plants is particularly challenging due to their contrasting environmental behaviors. The challenge is chelators can enhance Cd extraction by plants but Cd inhibits microbial activity, limiting PBDEs degradation. To tackle this, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi show promising potential as they produce extensive hyphae networks capable of immobilizing Cd and enhancing rhizosphere microbial activity. However, …

Alginate Beads Encapsulated Auxin-Producing PGPR as a Biofertilizer Promotes Triticum aestivum Growth.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can be utilized to enhance plant growth and production. The use of efficient PGPR is one of the effective ways to improve Triticum aestivum (wheat) growth and nutrition. The exploration of native rhizobacterial strains as biofertilizers with suitable carriers in immobilized form is an alternative way to prevent soil ecosystem pollution. In order to evaluate the potential of biofertilizers and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes, numerous experiments were conducted on isolated strains. The impact of auxin-producing rhizobacterial strains (APRS)

Plant mineral nutrition and disease resistance: A significant linkage for sustainable crop protection.

Complete and balanced nutrition has always been the first line of plant defense due to the direct involvement of mineral elements in plant protection. Mineral elements affect plant health directly by modulating the activity of redox enzymes or improving the plant vigor indirectly by altering root exudates, and changing microflora population dynamics, rhizosphere soil nutrient content, pH fluctuation, lignin deposition, and phytoalexin biosynthesis. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important macronutrients having a significant impact on the host-pathogen axis. N negatively affects the plant's ph…

Characterization of Bacillus velezensis AK-0 as a biocontrol agent against apple bitter rot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.

Bacillus genus produces several secondary metabolites with biocontrol ability against various phytopathogens. Bacillus velezensis AK-0 (AK-0), an antagonistic strain isolated from Korean ginseng rhizospheric soil, was found to exhibit antagonistic activity against several phytopathogens. To further display the genetic mechanism of the biocontrol traits of AK-0, we report the complete genome sequence of AK-0 and compared it with complete genome sequences of closely related strains. We report the biocontrol activity of AK-0 against apple bitter rot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, which

Green Infrastructure Design Influences Communities of Urban Soil Bacteria.

The importance of natural ecosystem processes is often overlooked in urban areas. Green Infrastructure (GI) features have been constructed in urban areas as elements to capture and treat excess urban runoff while providing a range of ancillary benefits, e.g., ecosystem processes mediated by microorganisms that improve air and water quality, in addition to the associations with plant and tree rhizospheres. The objective of this study was to characterize the bacterial community and diversity in engineered soils (Technosols) of five types of GI in New York City; vegetated swales, right of way bio…

Regulation of GacA in Pseudomonas chlororaphis Strains Shows a Niche Specificity.

The GacS/GacA two-component system plays a central role in the regulation of a broad range of biological functions in many bacteria. In the biocontrol organism Pseudomonas chlororaphis, the Gac system has been shown to positively control quorum sensing, biofilm formation, and phenazine production, but has an overall negative impact on motility. These studies have been performed with strains originated from the rhizosphere predominantly. To investigate the level of conservation between the GacA regulation of biocontrol-related traits in P. chlororaphis isolates from different habitats, the stud…
