The current thyroid ultrasound relies heavily on the experience and skills of the sonographer and the expertise of the radiologist, and the process is physically and cognitively exhausting. In this paper, we report a fully autonomous robotic ultrasound system, which is able to scan thyroid regions without human assistance and identify malignant nod- ules. In this system, human skeleton point recognition, reinforcement learning, and force feedback are used to deal with the difficulties in locating thyroid targets. The orientation of the ultrasound probe is adjusted dynamically via Bayesian opti

Few intrapericardial robotic lung resection cases have been reported in the literature because of the perceived complexity of the procedure, with most surgeons embarking on an open resection via a thoracotomy. We present the case of a right middle and lower lobe tumour involving the pericardium and the origin of the right middle lobe vein. An intrapericardial lower bilobectomy was performed, with pericardial resection, pre-pericardial fat resection and mesh reconstruction. The vascular stapler for the right middle lobe vein was fired on the atrium. The resection was completed via a retrograde

This article explores the concept of external magnetic control for vine robots to enable their high curvature steering and navigation for use in endoluminal applications. Vine robots, inspired by natural growth and locomotion strategies, present unique shape adaptation capabilities that allow passive deformation around obstacles. However, without additional steering mechanisms, they lack the ability to actively select the desired direction of growth. The principles of magnetically steered growing robots are discussed, and experimental results showcase the effectiveness of the proposed magnetic

INTRODUCTION: Proper bladder drainage is crucial. Children with bladder dysfunction may require alternative methods like clean intermittent catheterisation (CIC). However, CIC can be challenging for individuals with impairments. The Mitrofanoff procedure provides a solution by connecting the appendix to the bladder and creating a stoma on the skin, allowing for continent catheterisation. Minimally invasive techniques, including robotics, have been adopted recently. The aim of this study is to review the existing literature on robotic Mitrofanoff procedures.

OBJECTIVE: Reoperative surgery for isolated tricuspid valve (TV) pathology has been associated with high morbidity and mortality rates; however, the current guidelines recommend intervention for severe, symptomatic TV regurgitation or mild to moderate symptoms with progressive right ventricular dysfunction. There are minimal data regarding reoperative intervention for TV disease. Similarly, there are no large series describing robot-assisted reoperative TV surgery.
METHODS: Institutional Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database data were used to identify patients with previ

BACKGROUND: We previously reported on subxiphoid uniportal thymectomy (SUT) and subxiphoid robotic thymectomy (SRT). This descriptive study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of both SUT and SRT techniques.
METHODS: Between March 2011 and December 2022, 268 patients underwent subxiphoid thymectomy. In cases demonstrating no evidence of invasion into other organs, SUT was selected due to its minimal invasiveness. In cases where the tumor was in contact with the innominate vein or those with suspected invasion into other organs, SRT with additional intercostal ports was selected due t

BACKGROUND: Open cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a therapeutic option for the management of malignancies with peritoneal carcinomatosis and of peritoneal origin. Robotic surgery shows promise as a minimally invasive approach for select patients. We aimed to evaluate the differences in outcomes between robotic versus open CRS/HIPEC and hypothesized less morbidity and faster recovery in the robotic approach group.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study from our HIPEC database including all tumor origins. We included patients aged

Background/Objectives: Clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of rehabilitation robotics for various pathological conditions, but the overall impact on rehabilitation practice remains unclear. We comprehensively examined and analyzed systematic reviews (SRs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating rehabilitative interventions with robotic devices. Methods: Four databases were searched using term combinations of keywords related to robotic devices, rehabilitation, and SRs. The SR meta-analyses were categorized into "convincing", "highly suggestive", "suggestive", "weak", or…

Achalasia is an esophageal motility disorder. It occurs due to the destruction of nerves in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which leads to the failure of the LES to relax. Patients typically complain of dysphagia, chest pain, and regurgitation. They often report drinking liquids with solids intake to help propel food boluses into the stomach. The diagnosis of achalasia is typically confirmed with an esophagogram and a motility study (esophageal manometry). An esophagogram classically shows the bird beak sign with tapering in the distal esophagus. The treatment for achalasia includes both

Our objective was to present the perioperative and oncological results of robot-assisted surgery performed in our department. In our publication, we retrospectively reviewed the data of 658 robot-assisted procedures performed between 01/02/2022 and 31/03/2024. The average operative time for radical prostatectomy with bilateral lymph node block dissection was 229 minutes, mean blood loss was 305 ml. Without lymphadenectomy, mean blood loss was 233 ml, operative time was 185 minutes. Biochemical relapse- free rate was 81.6% one year after the procedures. 165 patients underwent robot-assisted par

Assistive interfaces enable collaborative interactions between humans and robots. In contrast to traditional rigid devices, conformable fabrics with tunable mechanical properties have emerged as compelling alternatives. However, existing assistive fabrics actuated by fluidic or thermal stimuli struggle to adapt to complex body contours and are hindered by challenges such as large volumes after actuation and slow response rates. To overcome these limitations, inspiration is drawn from biological protective organisms combining hard and soft phases, and active assistive fabrics consisting of arch

In 1985, Professor KWOH first introduced robots into neurosurgery. Since then, advancements of stereotactic frames, radiographic imaging, and neuronavigation have led to the dominance of classic stereotactic robots. A comprehensive retrieval was performed using academic databases and search agents to acquire professional information, with a cutoff date of June, 2024. This reveals a multitude of emerging technologies are coming to the forefront, including tremor filtering, motion scaling, obstacle avoidance, force sensing, which have made significant contributions to the high efficiency, high p

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Untreated obturator nerve injury may result in weakness in thigh adduction, decreased medial thigh sensation, and groin pain. A neurosurgeon may be consulted intraoperatively for repair. Although there are reports of obturator nerve injury and repair in the gynecologic surgery literature, there are few reports detailing the specific steps of nerve repair after partial transection and the underlying principles of nerve coaptation, especially in the robotic-assisted setting.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A partial transection of the right obturator nerve was noted in a patie

A 23-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds and upon arrival to the emergency room was found on imaging to have a large pneumothorax with considerable subcutaneous emphysema. Intubation and placement of bilateral chest tubes did not improve the patient's oxygenation; bronchoscopy revealed a 1 cm tracheal defect in the membranous wall 4 cm proximal to the carina. The patient underwent robot-assisted primary repair of the tracheal injury with a #3-0 PDS Stratafix barbed suture buttressed with an intercostal muscle flap. The patient was discharged in good condition on post-operative day 17, wit

The latest trend shows a strong demand for minimally invasive surgery. The popularity of robot-assisted surgeries has increased because they eliminate many of the disadvantages of conventional laparoscopic methods. However, compared to the conventional method of anesthesia treatment, robotic surgery may require adjustments in the way patients are positioned and the general arrangement of personnel and equipment. Pheochromocytomas (PHEOs) are tumours of neural crest cells that make catecholamines. Early detection and appropriate treatment are required for PHEO. The best course of action for tr
