The survival to term of 414 sheep embryos, thawed and transferred after conventional cryopreservation and storage for 13 years, was evaluated. A concurrent experiment involving the transfer of vitrified embryos to 91 ewes and artificial insemination of 51 ewes with frozen-thawed semen from sires of the long-term cryopreserved embryos provided forms of control treatments. Heat stress during pregnancy in sheep is associated with respiratory alkalosis in both the mother and fetus, and, if prolonged, fetal growth is retarded. Sheep were immunised with ovalbumin and then infected with the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina in order to study immunoglobulin and specific antibody degradation at the wound site. Asphyxia can cause neurologic damage in the fetus, but there are few data relating severity or duration of asphyxia to the degree of cerebral damage. We report cerebral histologic and electrophysiologic changes after asphyxia in chronically instrumented late-gestation fetal sheep. Three patients had conjunctival ophthalmomyiasis caused by the ovine nasal botfly. All patients had a sudden onset of redness, tearing, and foreign-body sensation of the affected eye. One to nine Oestrus ovis first-instar larvae were removed from the bulbar or palpebral conjunctiva of each patient. Symptoms and clinical signs resolved after mechanical removal of the larvae. Specific taxonomic diagnosis of O. ovis larvae was determined on the basis of characteristic conformation of the terminal end of the larval caudal segment as seen by use of light microscopy.

An outbreak of congenital abnormalities occurred in sheep at San Angelo, Texas, between December 1986 and February 1987. Of 360 lambs born, 19.2% had arthrogryposis or other musculo-skeletal problems and hydranencephaly (AGH), and the total neonatal loss was 25.6%.
