Sickle cell disease is the most common hemoglobinopathy. Homozygous patients are prone to vaso-occlusive crises. A 19-year-old male patient with the homozygous sickle cell trait was admitted to the hospital due to a sickle cell crisis. During his admission he developed a left periorbital edema. The diagnosis of a subperiosteal orbital hematoma (SOH) was made by CT and MRI imaging. SOH is a rare complication of a VOC. The clinical course is mostly self-resolving, with some cases reporting the need for surgical decompression when orbital compression syndrome is clinically diagnosed. Differentiat…

Renal medullary carcinoma is an epithelial malignant tumor arising from collecting duct epithelium. The tumor is almost exclusive to young black patients with the sickle cell hemoglobinopathies, mainly sickle cell trait (SCT). Most patients present with metastatic disease and have a worse prognosis. An African-American male with sickle cell disease (HbSCD) who was diagnosed to have renal medullary carcinoma is presented here. The clinical, histologic and radiologic features of this tumor are described. In the setting of advanced disease, treatment modalities have proved largely unsuccessful. G…

We report a case of repeated testicular infarction in a 39-year-old man with sickle cell disease. The patient presented with a 2-week history of testicular pain and was found clinically and sonographically to have a testicular mass, suspicious for a testicular tumor. The pathologic examination of the orchiectomy specimen revealed multiple infarcts, showing temporal variation ranging from acute (several days old) to recent (2 to 3 weeks old) to remote. This is the fifth case of segmental testicular infarction reported in patients with sickle cell disease/trait. We propose repeated testicular in

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder of the blood, and characterized by vasoocclusive crises (VOC), risks for pneumococcal infection … reening of high risk individuals, 35,636 individuals were screened, of whom 5466 were found to have sickle cell trait and 1010 were identified with sickle cell disease. Community screening revealed a sickle cell trait prevalence of 13.0% in the SC, 12.0% in the ST and 3.4% in the OBC population. This study describes the prevalence of the β(S) gene within these grou …

This study was conducted in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia where both thalassaemia and Hb S genes occur at a high frequency. In 171 Saudi Hb S heterozygotes, the range for Hb S was found to be 17-45% with a mean of 31.0%. Frequency distribution histograms showed a trimodal distribution. Peak A, B and C had 18-28, 28-35 and 35-45% Hb S values, respectively. Determination of alpha/beta ratio showed that these findings result from interaction of Hb S with the alpha-thalassaemia gene. Peak C with mean for Hb S of 40% consisted of a majority of individuals with no thalassaemia gene, and the a

Reticulocytes, isolated from the blood of sickle cell trait donors with either low (25-30%) or high (40-42%) haemoglobin S(Hb S) concentrations, were incubated with [3H]leucine for various times from 1.25 to 60 min. Samples of the total soluble fractions of the cells were denatured with urea and mercaptoethanol. The mixtures were analysed by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate strips. The specific radioactivities (dpm/mg) of the separated betaS and betaA globin chains were determined. The betaS/betaA ratios of globin chain specific radio activities in the reticulocytes of the 'low Hb S' donor…

Management of black children who present to a pediatric emergency department (ED) commonly requires knowledge of their sickle cell status. T … s required a sickle cell screening test in the ED. ED screening detected three (6%) newly diagnosed sickle cell trait patients. In summary, sickle cell screening is recommended for young black children who present to an ED with fever or signs and symptoms supportive of sickle cell disease complications.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, with persons heterozygous for the mutation said to have the sickle cell trait (SCT). Serious adverse effects are mainly limited to those with SCD, but the distinction between disease and trait is not always clear to the general population. We sought to determine the accuracy of self-reported SCD when compared to genetic confirmation.
METHODS: From stratified random samples of Southern Community Cohort Study participants, we sequenced the β- globin gene in 51 individuals reporting SCD and 75 individuals reporting…

BACKGROUND: Sickle haemoglobin (HbS) is known to offer considerable protection against falciparum malaria. However, the mechanism of protection is not yet completely understood. In this study, we investigate how the presence of the sickle cell trait affects the haematological profile of AS persons with malaria, in comparison with similarly infected persons with HbAA. This study is based on the hypothesis that the sickle cell trait plays a protective role against malaria.
METHODS: Children from an endemic malaria transmission area in Yemen were enrolled in this study. Hematological parameters …

Glycosylated hemoglobin (glyco Hb) was determined by affinity chromatography and Hb S1 and Hb F by Bio-Rex 70 chromatography in patients with sickle cell anemia, SC disease, S beta+-thalassemia, and S beta 0-thalassemia. SC and S beta-thalassemia patients had normal levels of glyco Hb whereas SS patients had significantly lower levels. Within each group of patients a direct correlation existed between Hb F and glyco Hb or Hb S1 levels. A similar relationship was noticed when glyco Hb and Hb F levels were compared in red cell populations of various densities (ages). Hb F seems to influence glyc
