OBJECTIVES: After submucosal implantation of the ureters in ureterosigmoidostomy failed for different reasons, urologists are confronted with the task of creating a new form of urinary diversion. Therefore, the implantation site of the ureters must be removed because of the risk of secondary malignancy with the consequences of a large colonic defect.

A case of granular cell tumor occurring in the sigmoid colon is reported. The patient, a 56-year-old man, visited our hospital for further evaluation of occult blood in his stool. We report a case of an extensive intermittent sigmoidorectal intussusception due to an adenocarcinoma of the rectum in an adult. Abdominal multislice computed tomography with two-dimensional multiplanar reformatted images and three-dimensional volume rendering rapidly established the diagnosis preoperatively. The intussusception was confirmed by surgery.

The relation between obesity and adenomatous polyps of the sigmoid colon was investigated in male self-defense officials who received a retirement health examination at three hospitals of the Self-Defense Forces in Japan between January 1991 and December 1992. A partially obstructing lesion of the splenic flexure was discovered during a barium enema examination, and subsequent colonoscopy and biopsy demonstrated a squamous cell carcinoma. This is the first reported instance of squamous cell carcinoma of the colon in which the splenic flexure has been involved. The case is discussed, and the recent literature on this entity is reviewed.
