Autism Spectrum Disorders: Analysis of Mobile Elements at 7q11.23 Williams-Beuren Region by Comparative Genomics.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by a deficit in social interaction and communication. Many genetic variants are associated with ASD, including duplication of 7q11.23 encompassing 26-28 genes. Symmetrically, the hemizygous deletion of 7q11.23 causes Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a multisystem disorder characterized by "hyper-sociability" and communication skills. Interestingly, deletion of four non-exonic mobile elements (MEs) in the "canine WBS locus" were associated with the behavioral divergence between the wolf and the dog

Affect, interpersonal behaviour and interpersonal perception during open-label, uncontrolled paroxetine treatment of people with social anxiety disorder: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory-based research with community samples has suggested changes in affective, behavioural and cognitive processes as possible explanations for the effects of serotonergic medications. Examining the effects of serotonergic medications using an ecological momentary measure (such as event-contingent recording) in the daily lives of people with social anxiety disorder would contribute to establishing the effects of these medications on affect, behaviour and one form of cognition: perception of others’ behaviour. METHODS: The present study assessed changes in affect, interperson

[Sixty years of autism].

The concept of autism has been broadened the last few years from 'early infantile autism' to 'an autistic spectrum'. Autism and related contact disorders are grouped together under 'pervasive developmental disorders' or 'autistic spectrum disorders'. The autistic disorder, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), Rett's disorder and the childhood disintegrative disorder all belong to this group. People with an autistic spectrum disorder have severe difficulties in the integration of perceived stimuli into a meaningful entity. More than two-thirds

Toward a Developmental Timing Framework for Autism: Linking Hemispheric Asymmetry, Motor Organization, and Motor-Social Coupling.

Early behavioral features associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently examined within separate motor, sensory, and social domains rather than as interacting components of a developing neurobiological system. In this article, we present a hypothesis-driven conceptual framework proposing that variation in developmental timing and coordination across neural, motor, and interpersonal systems may contribute to differences in early social developmental trajectories. Drawing on evidence from fetal, infant, and early childhood development, we consider how hemispheric specialization,

Neuropalliative Care in Neuromuscular Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual issues that people with neuromuscular disease may face as the disease progresses and how neuropalliative care can help in the assessment and management of these issues. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Understanding of the genetic influences on progressive neuromuscular disease is increasing, and new treatments are being developed that may offer the possibility of slowing or even halting disease, although the treatments may be very expensive. The use of technology will allow some areas of care, particularly communication,

Prevalence and severity of DSM-5 eating disorders in a community cohort of adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) includes a considerably revised eating disorder section. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence and severity of eating disorders based on the new DSM-5 criteria in a community cohort of adolescents. METHOD: This study is part of TRAILS (TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey), a Dutch cohort study on mental health and social development from preadolescence into young adulthood. At baseline, the participants (n = 2,230) were about 11 years old. Body mass index was measured at

A battery of olfactory-based screens for phenotyping the social and sexual behaviors of mice.

We provide a battery of screens that reflect the social and sexual behavior displayed by both captive and feral mice. Some screens focus on measuring aspects of chemical communication, providing information about whether or not mice will interact and if they do so, predict the nature of the interaction. Other screens measure direct interactions between target mice and same- and opposite-sex conspecifics, providing an indication of the social status and sexual responsiveness, respectively, of target mice. The battery of screens yields a high-throughput bioassay of a mouse's relative social stat

Social isolation in adolescence and long-term changes in the gut microbiota composition and in the hippocampal inflammation: Implications for psychiatric disorders - Dirk Hellhammer Award Paper 2021.

Exposure to early adverse experiences induces persistent changes in physiological, emotional and behavioural functions predisposing the individual to an enhanced vulnerability to develop different disorders during lifespan. The adverse outcomes depend upon the timing of the stressful experiences, and in this contest, adolescence represents a key sensitive period for brain development. Among the biological systems involved, gut microbiota has recently been proposed to act on the interplay between the stress response, brain functions and immune system, through the gut-brain axis communication. Serum Folate Status Is Primarily Associated With Neurodevelopment in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders Aged Three and Under-A Multi-Center Study in China.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Folate has been demonstrated to be associated with ASD. However, current studies on the correlation between folate and symptoms of children with ASD have inconsistent conclusions, use mainly small samples, and lack age-stratified analysis. This study aimed to explore the association between serum folate and symptoms of autistic children at different age groups from a multi-center perspective. Methods: We enrolled 1,300 children with ASD and 1,246 typically developing (TD) children under 7 years old from 13 cit

Practitioner review: Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in 2- and 3-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: Progress has recently been made in the earlier identification of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Whilst being welcome, this progress to earlier referral and diagnosis presents new challenges to clinical practice, including the accuracy and stability of early diagnosis, the utility of standardised assessment instruments with young pre-schoolers and the ability to indicate prognosis. METHOD: A selective review of recent research literature on the characteristic features of ASD in preschool children. RESULTS: Multidisciplinary diagnostic assessment should include detai

Core-Symptom-Defined Cortical Gyrification Differences in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous disease that is characterized by abnormalities in social communication and interaction as well as repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. Structural brain imaging has identified significant cortical folding alterations in ASD; however, relatively less known is whether the core symptoms are related to neuroanatomical differences. In this study, we aimed to explore core-symptom-anchored gyrification alterations and their developmental trajectories in ASD. We measured the cortical vertex-wise gyrification index (GI) in 321 patients with ASD

Schizophrenics show a failure in the decoding of violations of conversational implicatures.

OBJECTIVES: Recent approaches to the 'theory of mind' and pragmatics support that, if we did not have any idea about what other people know, we could hardly use language effectively. Successful communication (the pragmatic aspect of language) depends on inferring the beliefs and intentions of the partner in the conversation. Such successful communication is linguistically realized in part by cohesion and in part by abiding by the maxims derived from the cooperative principle. However, the violations of the Gricean implicatures are generally used in everyday language, mainly to point at a hidde

The effectiveness of a multi-dimensional intervention model combining cognitive behavioral therapy and social support in hospitalized depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Depression management in hospitalized patients with moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder (MDD) often relies on pharmacotherapy, with limited integration of psychosocial interventions. This study introduces a novel multidimensional model combining cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and structured social support, addressing a critical gap in inpatient care. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 212 inpatients diagnosed with moderate-to-severe MDD between November 2023 and December 2024. Patients were assigned to either routine care (n = 104) or an in
