The impact of cognitive restructuring and mindfulness strategies on postevent processing and affect in social anxiety disorder.

Postevent processing (PEP; reviewing a past social event in detail) is a key maintenance factor of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The current study examined the efficacy of a single session cognitive restructuring or mindfulness strategy on decreasing PEP and its associated effects, and investigated the cognitive processes involved. Fifty-six individuals with SAD completed a speech task to elicit PEP and were taught a cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, or control strategy to manage their negative thoughts. Participants in the cognitive restructuring and mindfulness conditions reported signi

How much do sample characteristics affect the effect size? An investigation of studies testing the treatment effects for social phobia.

In spite of the success of cognitive behavioral therapy for social phobia in research studies, it remains unclear whether interventions will remain successful in the routine of clinical practice, where patients might differ from those in research samples. This study investigates the possibility that higher effect sizes are achieved under typical research conditions. Thirty studies testing treatment effects for social phobia are re-examined by categorizing them according to the quality and amount of applied sample restriction and laboratory study characteristics. The results indicate that even

The psychosocial and neuropsychiatric sequelae of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and related disorders.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its related conditions are a public health problem of unprecedented proportions due to the debilitating and fatal nature of the disease, the sociocultural implications related to contagion, and its initial appearance in certain socially stigmatized groups. The ability of patients to tolerate the consequences of the disease depends on their psychological ability to cope based on emotional strength and the availability of social support. The psychological and social impact of AIDS may result in psychiatric symptoms similar to those seen in other

["To put it bluntly, you feel useless, worthless" : The invisibility and marginalization of seniors living in poverty].

BACKGROUND: Germany's means-tested basic income support in old age (Grundsicherung im Alter) often goes unclaimed; shame is considered a potential barrier. Little is known about how old age poverty is translated into a socially mediated judgment of how people have lived their lives and of their worth as persons. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to reconstruct this process and the social invisibility that emerges from it under social and institutional conditions. METHODS: Drawing on prior content analysis, the qualitative secondary analysis triangulates perspectives from 16 interviews with people aged 6

#Body goals or #Bopo? Exposure to pregnancy and post-partum related social media images: Effects on the body image and mood of women in the peri-pregnancy period.

Women who are pregnant or have recently given birth use social media where they may encounter content promoting appearance ideals or offering more realistic representations of the body during this unique period. To date, little is known regarding the ways in which different social media content may impact the body image and mood of women who are pregnant or postpartum. A sample of 261 participants aged 21-44, mean (SD) age = 31.79 (4.402), were randomly allocated online to view either thin-and-toned ideal or body positive social media content specific to the pregnancy and postpartum period, or

To see ourselves as others see us: an experimental integration of the intra and interpersonal consequences of self-protection in social anxiety disorder.

The current study investigated the mechanism through which safety behaviors perpetuate perceived and actual negative social outcomes hypothesized to maintain social anxiety disorder (SAD). Eighty individuals diagnosed with generalized SAD took part in a "getting acquainted" conversation with a trained experimental confederate. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a safety behavior reduction plus exposure condition (SB + EXP) or a graduated exposure (EXP) control condition and completed a 2nd conversation with the same interaction partner. Mediation analyses revealed that particip

Modulation of Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder by Script-Based Imaginal Exposure to Betrayal.

Interpersonal and trust-related difficulties are central features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study, we applied script-driven betrayal imagery to evoke mistrustful behavior in a social reinforcement learning task. In 21 BPD and 20 healthy control (HC) participants, we compared this approach to the standard confederate paradigm used in research studies. The script-driven imagery evoked a transient increase in negative affect and also decreased trusting behavior to a similar degree in both groups. Across conditions, we also replicated previously reported between-group diffe

Self-Care in an Interprofessional Setting Providing Services to Detained Immigrants with Serious Mental Health Conditions.

The authors are social workers and lawyers in an interprofessional setting providing legal and social services to detained immigrants in deportation proceedings who have serious mental health conditions. Drawing on direct experience working in the setting, as well as survey responses and feedback from other involved providers, the authors (a) identify barriers to self-care for social workers and lawyers that prevent them from effectively addressing the effects of secondary trauma; (b) propose a relationship-centered framework that, as an alternative to individualized practices of self-care, se

Behavioral and EEG responses to social evaluation: A two-generation family study on social anxiety.

Social anxiety disorder is an invalidating psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme fear and avoidance of one or more social situations in which patients might experience scrutiny by others. The goal of this two-generation family study was to delineate behavioral and electrocortical endophenotypes of social anxiety disorder related to social evaluation. Nine families of patients with social anxiety disorder (their spouse and children, and siblings of these patients with spouse and children) performed a social judgment paradigm in which they believed to be evaluated by peers. For each peer

The role of facebook support groups for women with benign urologic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the availability and content of patient support groups on social media platforms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five prevalent benign, urologic conditions affecting adult women were selected for analysis. Facebook support groups for these conditions were identified. Groups specific to one urologic condition and with at least 400 members were included, and groups for pediatric and malignant conditions were excluded. Each support group was analyzed for member count, posts per month, and period of activity. The 100 most recent posts in the largest support groups were manually r

Haven't we met somewhere before? The effects of a brief Internet introduction on social anxiety in a subsequent face to face interaction.

Social anxiety occurs in a range of social situations, the salience of which is influenced by prevailing modes of social contact. The emergence of computer mediated communication (CMC), buoyed by the recent explosion of social networks, has changed the way many people make and maintain social contacts. We randomly assigned 30 socially anxious and 30 low social anxiety participants to a brief internet chat introduction or a control internet surfing condition followed by a standardized face to face (FTF) interaction. We hypothesized that for socially anxious participants the chat introduction wo

Changes in social reward across adolescence in male mice.

In humans, adolescence is a time of dynamic behavioral and emotional changes, including a transient decrease in affect associated with being among family members. It is not clear if a similar change occurs in rodent species used to model human psychiatric disorders. Here, we investigated the developmental profile of the rewarding value of interactions with siblings across adolescence in male mice, using the social conditioned place preference task. We found that the reward value of social interactions followed a similar course to that in humans: high in early adolescence, it decreased in mid-a

Effect of social familiarity on salivary cortisol and self-reports of social anxiety and stress in children with high functioning autism spectrum disorders.

This study examined the effect of social familiarity on salivary cortisol and social anxiety/stress for a sample of children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders. The relationship between self-reported social anxiety/stress and salivary cortisol was also examined. Participants interacted with a familiar peer on one occasion and an unfamiliar peer on another occasion. Data were collected using salivary cortisol and a scale measuring subjective stress. Results indicated a significant condition by order interaction for salivary cortisol levels, while self-rated stress did not differ si

Social and occupational aspects related to persistent low back pain in women geriatric nursing assistants.

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric nursing assistants often experience low back pain (LBP), which may become persistent and impair daily and occupational functioning. Social determinants of health play a key role in its development. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of persistent LBP and its associated social and working conditions among women working as geriatric nursing assistants in Spain. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included women working as geriatric nursing assistants in Spain. A total of 480 participants were recruited through snowball sampling and completed self-reported questionn

Why Are Workplace Social Support Programs Not Improving the Mental Health of Canadian Correctional Officers? An Examination of the Theoretical Concepts Underpinning Support.

In Canada, public safety personnel, including correctional officers, experience high rates of mental health problems. Correctional officers' occupational stress has been characterized as insidious and chronic due to multiple and unpredictable occupational risk factors such as violence, unsupportive colleagues and management, poor prison conditions, and shift work. Given the increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes associated with operational stressors, organizational programs have been developed to provide correctional officers with support to promote mental well-being and to provide m

Pain Intensity among Community-Dwelling African American Older Adults in an Economically Disadvantaged Area of Los Angeles: Social, Behavioral, and Health Determinants.

BACKGROUND: Although social, behavioral, and health factors influence prevalence and intensity of pain, very few studies have investigated correlates of pain among economically disadvantaged older African American (AA) adults. OBJECTIVE: This study explored social, behavioral, and health correlates of pain intensity among community-dwelling AA older adults in an economically disadvantaged area of Los Angeles. METHODS: A cross-sectional study on 740 AA older adults (age ≥ 55 years) was conducted in South Los Angeles between 2015 and 2018. Exploratory variables were age, gender, educational at

Chronic social stress Ameliorates psoriasiform dermatitis through upregulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis.

Acute stress is a physiological response of an organism to adverse conditions, contributing to survival; however, persistence through time may lead to disease. Indeed, exacerbation of inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis has been reported to follow stressors in susceptible patients. Because chronic stress cannot ethically be elicited in patients under controlled laboratory conditions, we studied genetically modified mice that naturally develop psoriasiform dermatitis, and subjected them to an ethological chronic social contact stress paradigm. Although we found elevated pro-inflammatory n

Stigmatization in dermatology with a special focus on psoriatic patients.

A stigma is currently defined as a discrediting mark, biological or social, that sets a person off from others and disrupts interactions with them. People who differ from social norms in some respect are often negatively labeled. A number of medical conditions are recognized at present as stigmatizing their sufferers and certain skin diseases are among them. The article aimed to analyze the current understanding about stigmatization among dermatological patients, especially those with psoriasis. We performed our search on PubMed up to November 2016 and utilized combinations of key phrases cont

Working conditions and environmental exposures among electronic waste workers in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe informal e-waste recycling and working conditions at Agbogbloshie, Accra, Ghana. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews which were qualitatively analysed from a grounded theory perspective. RESULTS: Workers obtained e-waste from the various residential areas in Accra, then dismantled and burned them in open air to recover copper, aluminum, steel, and other products for sale to customers on-site or at the nearby Agbogbloshie market. The processers worked under unhealthy conditions often surrounded by refuse and human excreta without any form of protec
