Violence across the lifespan and its association with depression: cumulative effects and psychosocial moderation in the UK Biobank.

PURPOSE: Violence exposure is a well-established risk factor for depression, yet few large-scale studies have examined how distinct violence types across the lifespan interact to shape depression trajectories or how psychosocial factors may moderate these effects. METHODS: Drawing on data from 35,921 UK Biobank participants, we examined cross-sectional and prospective associations of childhood maltreatment, lifetime violence, and intimate partner violence (IPV) with depressive symptom severity and depression diagnosis (case-control design with propensity score matching). Hierarchical regressi

The relative importance of neighborhood environment features in explaining preeclampsia risk using machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Disentangling the role of the neighborhood environment in preeclampsia pathogenesis is crucial for addressing social and structural determinants of pregnancy health. Building on epidemiologic studies demonstrating environmental associations with preeclampsia, we used a machine learning approach to determine the relative importance of multiple simultaneous neighborhood features to facilitate prioritization of community pregnancy health initiatives. METHODS: We linked 26 features from the neighborhood environment, encompassing social vulnerability, built environment, physical envi

Mediation of Treatment Effects in Problem-Focused Social Skills Training versus Resource Activation for Children with Disruptive Behavior Problems: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

A previous randomized controlled trial comparing problem-focused computer-assisted skills training (ScouT) with supportive resource activation treatment (STARK) in children (6-12 years) with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) demonstrated significant pre-post changes in both treatment conditions, with ScouT being slightly superior on some outcomes. Based on the same sample (N = 99), the present study examined cross-sectional indirect associations between treatment condition and outcomes via intermediate variables, which conceptually correspond to mediation. We hypothesized that ScouT would le

Health complaints and work experiences among adults with neurofibromatosis 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder with usually benign nerve tumours, skin problems, pain and cardiovascular problems among common complications. AIMS: To examine work participation and experiences in relation to health complaints among adults with NF1. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional self-reported survey among 142 persons with NF1 (mean age = 50.3 years, SD = 12.0; 62% females). We measured physical and social dimensions of work experiences with eight items from the third wave of the epidemiological survey 'Nord-Trøndelag Health Study' (HUNT3). We

Functional capacity is significantly impaired in primary biliary cirrhosis and is related to orthostatic symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To assess patient-reported functional ability and its relationship with symptoms in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). METHODS: Functional status was assessed in a representative cohort of 75 patients with PBC using the Patient-Reported Outcome Measure Information System Health-Assessment Questionnaire (PROMIS-HAQ) functional assessment tool and was related to both symptom severity at the point of assessment (assessed using the PBC-40 and Orthostatic Grading Scale) and symptom severity change over the previous 4 years. Functional status in the PBC group was compared with primary scle

Priority setting on malaria interventions in Tanzania: strategies and challenges to mitigate against the intolerable burden.

In Tanzania, malaria remains one of the major causes of illness and death. The disease causes major obstacles to social and economic development. The extent of the problem is greatest among children less than five years of age and pregnant women. Malaria has been estimated to cost Tanzania more than US$ 240 million every year in lost gross domestic product, although it can be controlled for a fraction of that sum. Tanzania has actively participated in malaria research and in developing most control tools. However, the use of such tools and scaling up of effective interventions has been a major

Challenges of caring for homeless patients with inflammatory arthritis: 12-month follow-up observations and identification of certain barriers to care.

Homelessness is a public health crisis and there is a paucity of information about patients with rheumatic disease experiencing homelessness. We sought to develop approaches to improve care for this unique patient population. We previously reported observations on 17 homeless patients with inflammatory arthritis (15 rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 2 psoriatic arthritis (PsA)). We obtained follow-up information from our original 17 patients and compared this to data summarized and published about them from 12 months previously. We also created and administered a 100-question needs assessment survey.

Factors responsible for Uncontrolled Hypertension in the Adults over 50 years of age: A pilot study from Northern India.

Hypertension is the most common chronic disease of older adults and an important modifiable cause of mortality and morbidity. In this cross-sectional study, we gathered information about the demographic profile and biochemical parameters associated with hypertension in 897 study subjects above 50 years by structured questionnaires and various laboratory investigations. Higher body mass index, sedentary lifestyle, male sex, living alone, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption, medication non-compliance, and a higher serum cholesterol level were associated significantly with uncontrolled hyperte

What types of contacts are important for the spread of infections?: using contact survey data to explore European mixing patterns.

Knowledge of the determinants of infectious disease transmission is a public health priority as it allows the design of optimal control strategies for endemic or emerging infections. We analyse a detailed dataset on contact patterns across five European countries and use available serological profiles for varicella and parvovirus B19 infections to identify the types of contact that may be most relevant for transmission. We show that models informed by contact data fit well the observed serological profiles of both infections. We find that intimate types of contacts explain the pattern of acqui

Affective modulation of the startle eyeblink and postauricular reflexes in autism spectrum disorder.

Eyeblink and postauricular reflexes to standardized affective images were examined in individuals without (n = 37) and with (n = 20) autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Affective reflex modulation in control participants replicated previous findings. The ASD group, however, showed anomalous reflex modulation patterns, despite similar self-report ratings of pictures. Specifically, the ASD group demonstrated exaggerated eyeblink responses to pleasant images and exaggerated postauricular responses to unpleasant images. Although ASD is often conceptualized in terms of specific deficits in affective

Adult circumcision.

Adult circumcision can be performed under local or regional anesthesia. Medical indications for this procedure include phimosis, paraphimosis, recurrent balanitis and posthitis (inflammation of the prepuce). Nonmedical reasons may be social, cultural, personal or religious. The procedure is commonly performed using either the dorsal slit or the sleeve technique. The dorsal slit is especially useful in patients who have phimosis. The sleeve technique may provide better control of bleeding in patients with large subcutaneous veins. A dorsal penile nerve block, with or without a circumferential p

Unveiling the alterations of action processing and mu rhythm in Williams Syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by social difficulties, which may stem from atypical action processing. We investigated whether individuals with WS show impaired action processing as indexed by electroencephalographic (EEG) mu suppression, a biomarker of action processing. 17 individuals with WS, 17 healthy controls (HC) and 17 individuals with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) participated in the study. During EEG recording, participants performed a task requiring to predict actions under perceptual ambiguity. In a preceding learning phase, the pro

Associations of technostressors at work with burnout symptoms and chronic low-grade inflammation: a cross-sectional analysis in hospital employees.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the increasing scholarly interest in the phenomenon technostress, associated biological effects on employee health are under-researched. Chronic low-grade inflammation is suggested as a central pathway linking stress experience to disease development. The aim of this study was to assess associations of technology-related work stressors (technostressors) with low-grade inflammation and burnout symptoms. METHODS: N = 173 (74.6% women, Mage = 31.0 years) university hospital employees participated in a cross-sectional study. Self-report questionnaires were used for the assessme

Gender Differences in the Association Between Parental Psychological Control and Adolescent Problematic Short-Form Video Use: A Multiple Mediation Model.

PURPOSE: Currently, adolescent problematic short-form video use has evolved into a prominent social and public health issue. While existing literature has documented its antecedents, whether and how parental psychological control is associated with adolescent problematic short-form video use remain largely unexplored. Grounded in self-determination theory and the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model, we investigated the association and the mediating roles of ego depletion and future negative time perspective. METHODS: A total of 1277 junior and senior high school students (4

Contextual auditory processing in the inferior colliculus is affected in a sex- and age-dependent manner in the valproic acid-induced rat model of autism.

Diverse biological factors, such as sex and age, confer heterogeneity on sensory processing challenges in autism. These factors result in major difficulties in the processing of contextual information in social and non-social situations. To assess divergence in autistic traits, it is critical to consider sex- and age-related variability. Nevertheless, these differences remain largely elusive. Animal models of autism offer the possibility to examine contextual processing at the single-neuron level. Here, we investigated predictive processing of contextual auditory cues in the auditory midbrain

Comparing models that integrate obstetric care and WIC on improved program enrollment during pregnancy: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Low-income, rural pregnant women are at disproportionate risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes as well as future cardiovascular risk. Currently, less than half of eligible women enroll in the Women, Infants, and Children's (WIC) Program. This study aims to evaluate whether integrating clinical care and social care may advance health equity and reduce health disparities by directly linking women receiving obstetric care to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC and/or a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN). METHODS: This pragmatic study is situated in real-world care a

Delivering COVID-19 vaccine trials at speed: the implementation of a phase IV UK multi-centre randomised controlled trial to determine safety and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines co-administered with seasonal influenza vaccines (ComFluCOV).

BACKGROUND: In February 2021, the UK Department of Health and Social Care sought evidence on the safety and immunogenicity of COVID-19 and influenza vaccine co-administration to inform the 2021/2022 influenza vaccine policy. Co-administration could support vaccine uptake and reduce healthcare appointments. ComFluCOV was a randomised controlled trial designed to provide this evidence. This report outlines the methods used to deliver the trial in 6 months to answer an urgent public health question as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. METHODS: ComFluCOV was commissioned by the Department o

A mixed methods randomised control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the journey to social inclusion - phase 2 intervention for chronically homeless adults: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Chronic homelessness is a problem characterised by longstanding inability to attain or maintain secure accommodation. Longitudinal research with homeless populations is challenging, and randomised controlled trials that evaluate the effectiveness of intensive, case management interventions aimed at improving housing and health-related outcomes for chronically homelessness people are scant. More research is needed to inform programmatic design and policy frameworks in this area. This study protocol details an evaluation of the Journey to Social Inclusion - Phase 2 program, an interv

Neuropsychological impairments in emotion recognition compared to general cognition: profiles across six different neurological disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Social cognition, particularly emotion recognition, can be impaired in neurological disorders involving brain damage and neurocognitive deficits. However, it remains unclear whether distinctive profiles of social versus general cognitive impairments exist across neurological patient groups: moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (mod-sevTBI), acute ischaemic stroke (AIS), aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), frontal low-grade glioma (LGG), advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD).
