Consensus Paper: Cerebellum and Social Cognition.

The traditional view on the cerebellum is that it controls motor behavior. Although recent work has revealed that the cerebellum supports al … ces, and so facilitates social cognition by supporting optimal predictions about imminent or future social interaction and cooperation. This consensus paper brings together experts from different fields to discuss recent efforts in understanding the role of the cerebellum in social cognition, and the understanding of social behaviors and mental states by others, its …

Different mechanisms of risperidone result in improved interpersonal trust, social engagement and cooperative behavior in patients with schizophrenia compared to trifluoperazine.

AIM: Atypical antipsychotic treatment (e.g. risperidone) has been found to improve social functioning more than standard antipsychotic treatment. However, it is unclear which specific social behaviors are implicated in this improvement. The current study employed an interactive puzzle game to examine how social behaviors contribute to the improvement of social functioning by comparing patients receiving risperidone with those receiving trifluoperazine. METHODS: Scores on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, executive functioning, and social functioning were obtained from 24 patients with

Mitigating adolescent social anxiety symptoms: the effects of social support and social self-efficacy in findings from the Young-HUNT 3 study.

Adolescents' exposure to negative life events (NLEs) and potentially traumatic events is highly prevalent and increases their risk of developing psychological disorders considerably. NLE exposure has also been linked to the development of social anxiety disorder (SAD) among older children and young adolescents. Despite the relatively low treatment efficacy reported for children and adolescents suffering from SAD, few studies have addressed the extent to which resilience factors, such as social support and social self-efficacy, are associated with SAD symptoms. This study examined whether socia

Specific tasks expose constraints on social exploration and ultrasonic vocalisation production in male C57BL/6J mice.

Mice are widely studied for investigation of the mechanisms underlying sociability. Our understanding of the preferences, persistence and sensitivity of mouse social exploration to different sensory modalities is growing but studies report inconsistent social preferences in the C57BL/6 J strain, which is very commonly employed in studies of behavioural genetics. Herein, a battery of socially-relevant choice tasks were performed to assess the propensity of adult male C57BL/6 J mice to engage in exploration under various settings and emit ultrasonic vocalisations. With sex and age-matched conspe

Impact of transition in work status and social participation on cognitive performance among elderly in India.

INTRODUCTION: Transition to the oldage marks a change in work and social participation. Socio-economic and physical conditions arising from this change pose a risk for cognitive outcomes among the elderly. Gender shows different pathways to deal with the pattern of participation and to maintain cognitive health. In India, work participation in the oldage is an outcome of financial deprivations and lack of support. At the same time, alterations in social interactions can induce stress and precipitate cognitive decline in oldage. A dearth of studies in this domain motivates us to estimate the ef…

Social exclusion selectively attenuates social reward processing but promotes prosocial evaluations.

Social exclusion threatens belongingness, triggering adaptive reward processing changes. It remains unknown whether exclusion selectively alters social (vs. monetary) reward processing via hypervigilance or compensatory affiliation mechanisms. To address this, we recruited 61 participants to complete a Cyberball-based social exclusion or inclusion induction, with an electroencephalogram recorded during subsequent social and monetary reward tasks. Results revealed that positive versus negative feedback elicited stronger reward positivity in the social inclusion condition, while such an effect w

Can Social Anxiety Impact Facial Emotion Recognition in Schizophrenia?

Social anxiety is highly prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia, with studies suggesting rates of 30%. This study aimed at determining if social anxiety is linked to specific emotion recognition deficits and to specific social functioning deficits. A total of 47 participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and receiving outpatient services answered measures of facial recognition (Ekman; Facial Emotion Identification Test), facial discrimination (Facial Emotion Discrimination Test), role-play, social anxiety (Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Brief Social Phobia Scale), psychiatric sy…

Is post-event processing specific for social anxiety?

In their model of social phobia, Clark and Wells [1995. A cognitive model of social phobia. In R. G. Heimberg, M. Liebowitz, D. A. Hope & F. Schneier (Eds.), Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment (pp. 69-93). New York, London: The Guilford Press] introduced a process called "post-event processing" (PEP), which is characterized by prolonged rumination about past social situations. The present study examined to what extent PEP is specific for (a) social anxiety or (b) social situations. In a cross-sectional study, 217 participants reported about a social and a phobic event followed

Sex-specific behavioral feedback modulates sensorimotor processing and drives flexible social behavior.

How the brain enables individuals to adapt behavior to their partner is key to understanding social exchange. For example, courtship behavior involves sensorimotor processing of signals that can result in behavioral dialog between partners, such as stereotyped movements and singing. The courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster males with their partners, which are usually female but can also be male, involves singing. To investigate how behavioral feedback and sensorimotor processing contribute to flexible social interactions, we compared the courtship behavior and singing of male D. melan…

Comparing Perceptions of Technology-Based Interactions Among Depressed Older Adults Participating in a Randomized Controlled Trial During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to extreme social isolation and emotional distress. Technology-based contacts were used as substitutes for in-person interactions. Yet, studies suggest inequities in technology access and mixed perceptions regarding technological solutions to facilitate social interactions and deliver services among older adults. In this study, we explored and compared experiences with social isolation and adaptation to technology among low-income White and ethnically minoritized older adults. METHODS: Analysis of semi-structured interviews embedded in a randomized contro…

The Effects of Social Activities and Living Arrangements on Cognitive Functions in Middle-aged and Elderly Adults: A Panel Study Using the 2006-2018 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that participation in social activities (SA) can prevent cognitive decline (CD) and that living arrangements (LA) can affect cognitive function. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of SA and LA on CD, as well as their interactions, using longitudinal data. METHODS: Data were used from the 2006-2018 Korean Longitudinal Study for Aging, which followed 10 254 adults older than 45 years over a 12-year period. CD was defined as a ≥4-point score decrease in the Mini-Mental Status Exam over 2 years. We developed an extended Cox proportional hazards model

Frontal neurons driving competitive behaviour and ecology of social groups.

Competitive interactions have a vital role in the ecology of most animal species1-3 and powerfully influence the behaviour of groups4,5. To succeed, individuals must exert effort based on not only the resources available but also the social rank and behaviour of other group members2,6,7. The single-cellular mechanisms that precisely drive competitive interactions or the behaviour of social groups, however, remain poorly understood. Here we developed a naturalistic group paradigm in which large cohorts of mice competitively foraged for food as we wirelessly tracked neuronal activities across th

First impressions count: a controlled investigation of social skill following closed head injury.

This study examined social skills in 14 closed head injured (CHI) patients who were assessed at four months post-injury and compared with 19 orthopaedic control (OC) patients. Social skills deficits were found to be more common in the CHI patients, of whom over half were classified as socially unskilled. CHI patients displayed poorer social skills in the earlier (but not later) part of an extended social interaction, indicating that they make a poor first impression. It is suggested that poor initial impression formation skills may be one reason why CHI patients fail to establish and maintain …

Neural systems underlying RDoC social constructs: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Neuroscientists have sought to identify the underlying neural systems supporting social processing that allow interaction and communication, forming social relationships, and navigating the social world. Through the use of NIMH's Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework, we evaluated consensus among studies that examined brain activity during social tasks to elucidate regions comprising the "social brain". We examined convergence across tasks corresponding to the four RDoC social constructs, including Affiliation and Attachment, Social Communication, Perception and Understanding of Self, and

Social connections and mortality in Chilean older adults: analysis of 20 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of social connections aspects on mortality among the Chilean older population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study analyzed a sample of 2 265 community-dwelling adults aged 60+ from Santiago, Chile, with a median follow-up of 15 years. Social connection clusters were derived via cluster analysis across five dimensions: household size, marital status, group participation, recreational social activities, and perceived social support. All-cause mortality (2000-2019) was the outcome. Cox regression models, Kaplan-Meier curves, and interaction analyses were c

Early Trauma Leaves No Social Signature in Sanctuary-Housed Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Negative early experiences can have detrimental effects on social functioning in later life, both in humans as well as in other socially-living animals. In zoo-housed chimpanzees, recent evidence suggests that there may be a lingering signature of early trauma on individuals' social interaction tendencies as measured by social proximity and grooming. Here, we address whether a similar effect would be observable in chimpanzees living under semi-wild conditions in an African sanctuary. By analysing party size, close proximity and social grooming, we show that in this specific sanctuary, chimpanz…
