An optimization method for measuring the stomata in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) under multiple abiotic stresses.

As a gateway for gas exchange, pores regulate the transport of air and water in carbon assimilation, respiration, and transpiration to quickly adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, the study of stomatal movement characteristics of plants is helpful to strengthen the understanding of the mechanism of plant response to multi-environmental stress, and can improve the function of plant resistance to stresses. The stomatal movement of Arabidopsis leaves was observed by staining the stomata with rhodamine 6G, but this method has not been reported in other plant leaf stomata studies. Taking cass

Guard cell photorespiration controls stomata behavior and development.

Photorespiration is traditionally viewed as a limitation to photosynthetic efficiency. However, it is mandatory for safeguarding the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle from inhibitory byproducts through Rubisco-mediated oxidative misfire and is tightly integrated with primary metabolism. Whether photorespiratory metabolism directly regulates guard cell function and stomatal behavior remains a matter of intense debate. We manipulated the photorespiration-restricted pathway entry enzyme 2-phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGLP1) specifically in Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) guard cells and assessed ef

Contact allergy to cinnamon: case report.

Allergic contact stomatitis is a rare disorder that is unfamiliar to most clinicians. The vast majority of cases are associated with consumption of products containing cinnamaldehyde or cinnamon essential oil, which are used as flavourings because of their pleasant taste and sensation of freshness. We report here the case of a patient who was diagnosed with alllergic contact stomatitis due to cinnamon-flavoured chewing gum. The clinical features of allergic contact stomatitis, which may occur indiscriminately on any of the oral mucosa, include edema and erythroplakic, ulcerous or hyperkeratoti…

Case Report: Oral lichenoid mucositis in a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma undergoing treatment with pembrolizumab and axitinib.

Stomatitis is a relatively common adverse effect of systemic pharmacologic therapy seen in the treatment of various malignancies. When severe, stomatitis has the potential to limit a patient's ability to tolerate optimal medical therapy and to impact quality of life. There are a variety of etiologies underlying stomatitis, including lichenoid drug eruptions. Herein, we present a novel case of a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with pembrolizumab and axitinib who subsequently developed stomatitis consistent with a lichenoid drug reaction on biopsy. Pembrolizumab is known to …

Relationship between biochemical and clinical indices of B-vitamin deficiency. A study in rural school boys.

1. A study amongst schoolboys in villages around Hyderabad, India, showed that almost all the boys had riboflavin deficiency, 61% had pyridoxine deficiency, and 9.4% had thiamin deficiency as judged by enzymic tests. 2. The prevalence of angular stomatitis was 41.3% and that of glossitis was 18.2%. Biochemical deficiency of riboflavin and pyridoxine was marginally higher in children with angular stomatitis with or without associated glossitis, than in children without oral lesions. 3. Treatment with B-complex vitamins (containing 4 mg riboflavin and 10 mg pyridoxine) daily for 1 month produced…

Oral Candidiasis in a Diabetic Patient Wearing Bar-Retained Provisional Overdenture: Clinical Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Denture stomatitis is a clinical manifestation of oral candidiasis, often seen in individuals wearing removable dentures that lead to the formation of sub-prosthetic stomatitis. This is particularly common in maladjusted appliances that have been in use for many years. Studies have shown that patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes, or other medical complexities, have a higher likelihood of developing denture stomatitis. To address this problem, the use of implant-retained dentures with different types of attachments has been introduced, providing…

Hydrogen Sulfide Increases Production of NADPH Oxidase-Dependent Hydrogen Peroxide and Phospholipase D-Derived Phosphatidic Acid in Guard Cell Signaling.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important gaseous signaling molecule in plants that participates in stress responses and development. l-Cys desulfhydrase 1, one of the enzymatic sources of H2S in plants, participates in abscisic acid-induced stomatal closure. We combined pharmacological and genetic approaches to elucidate the involvement of H2S in stomatal closure and the interplay between H2S and other second messengers of the guard cell signaling network, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and phospholipase D (PLD)-derived phosphatidic acid in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Both NADPH oxidas

Oral mucosal diseases investigated by patch testing with a dental screening series.

The rôle of contact allergies in oral mucosal diseases was studied. The subjects were 24 patients out of 479 tested, who had oral mucosal symptoms and positive patch test reactions in a dental series during 1987-1994 at the Department of Dermatology, Helsinki University Hospital. The clinical diagnoses were oral lichen planus (LPO, 13 patients), leukoplakia (2), glossodynia, i.e., 'burning mouth syndrome' (4), stomatitis (3) and recurrent angioedema (2). Only 1 patient had symptoms in relation to dental care. All but 2 patients had allergic reactions to mercury (Hg) (12 patients), gold sodium …

Optimizing the Experimental Method for Stomata-Profiling Automation of Soybean Leaves Based on Deep Learning.

Stomatal observation and automatic stomatal detection are useful analyses of stomata for taxonomic, biological, physiological, and eco-physiological studies. We present a new clearing method for improved microscopic imaging of stomata in soybean followed by automated stomatal detection by deep learning. We tested eight clearing agent formulations based upon different ethanol and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) concentrations in order to improve the transparency in leaves. An optimal formulation-a 1:1 (v/v) mixture of 95% ethanol and NaOCl (6-14%)-produced better quality images of soybean stomata.

Metabolic crosstalk between hydroxylated monoterpenes and salicylic acid in tomato defense response against bacteria.

Hydroxylated monoterpenes (HMTPs) are differentially emitted by tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants resisting bacterial infection. We have studied the defensive role of these volatiles in the tomato response to bacteria, whose main entrance is through stomatal apertures. Treatments with some HMTPs resulted in stomatal closure and pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR1) induction. Particularly, α-terpineol induced stomatal closure in a salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid-independent manner and conferred resistance to bacteria. Interestingly, transgenic tomato plants overexpressing or silencing
