Loss of teeth is a distressing situation. The patient may cultivate feeling of loss of an organ on loss of teeth. Especially when anterior teeth are lost appearance of the patient is compromised with altered pronunciation. This is a really embarrassing situation for people working as news readers, social workers, marketing executives, theatre artists or persons whose presentation in front of people is important as part of their work. Replacement of missing teeth immediately after loss is not possible always due to local and systemic physiological factors, age, pathological factors and unfavour

OBJECTIVE: To study dimensional alterations of the alveolar ridge that occurred following tooth extraction as well as processes of bone modelling and remodelling associated with such change.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve mongrel dogs were included in the study. In both quadrants of the mandible incisions were made in the crevice region of the 3rd and 4th premolars. Minute buccal and lingual full thickness flaps were elevated. The four premolars were hemi-sected. The distal roots were removed. The extraction sites were covered with the mobilized gingival tissue. The extractions of the roots and

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. Guided bone regeneration techniques and the use of bone replacement materials have both been shown to enhance socket healing and to potentially modify the resorption process. This article will describe a surgical technique using textured, high-density polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane and particulate bone replacement materials for graft containment and prevention of soft tissue ingrowth into healing extraction sites. The technique described does not require primary closure, facilitating the

A case is reported of severe loss of alveolar bone in the maxilla, as a result of leakage into the tissues of an arsenical paste from the pulp chamber of an endodontically 'treated' tooth. The history of the use of arsenic in dentistry is discussed, as are the hazards inherent in the use of this outmoded and dangerous medicament.

Digital orthodontics has advanced through intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, virtual planning, and clear aligners; however, discrepancies remain between predicted and actual tooth movements. This narrative review critically examined the biological and biomechanical factors underlying the limited predictability of digitally planned orthodontic treatment. A structured literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar was conducted and peer-reviewed articles were critically analyzed. Current digital systems primarily operate on geometric and algorithm-based models that assume linear and standardi

Tooth extraction commonly causes uncontrolled bleeding, loss of blood clots, and bacterial infection, leading to the dry socket and bone resorption. Thus, it is highly attractive to design a bio-multifunctional scaffold with outstanding antimicrobial, hemostatic, and osteogenic performances for avoiding dry sockets in clinical applications. Herein, alginate (AG)/quaternized chitosan (Qch)/diatomite (Di) sponges were fabricated via electrostatic interaction, Ca2+ cross-linking, as well as lyophilization methods. The composite sponges are facilely made into the shape of the tooth root, which cou

Dental pulp, plays an indispensable role in maintaining homeostasis of the tooth. Pulp necrosis always causes tooth nutrition deficiency and abnormal root development, which leads to tooth discoloration, fracture or even loss. Our previous study showed implantation of autologous SHED could regenerate functional dental pulp. However, the detailed mechanism of the implanted SHED participating in dental pulp regeneration remains unknown. In this study, we implanted SHED in a porcine dental pulp regeneration model to evaluate the regenerative effect and identify whether SHED promoted angiogenesis

Primary cilia and intraflagellar transport (IFT) proteins control a wide variety of processes during tissue development and homeostasis. However, their role in regulation of stem cell properties during tooth development remains elusive. Here, we revealed that dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) express IFT80, which is required for maintaining DPSC properties. Mice with deletion of IFT80 in odontoblast lineage show impaired molar root development and delayed incisor eruption through reduced DPSC proliferation and differentiation, and disrupted odontoblast polarization. Impaired odontoblast different

Skulls (n=104) of northern elephant seals from California were examined macroscopically. The animals varied in age but the numbers of each sex were roughly equal. The majority (86%) of teeth were available for examination. The mandibular first premolars were the most common teeth to be congenitally absent, with 2.3% missing. Supernumerary teeth (usually a supplemental mandibular molar) were associated with only 1.4% of normal teeth (or empty alveolar sockets). At least one persistent deciduous tooth was present in 38% of skulls, 70% of which were juvenile skulls. The majority (95.8%) of premol

OBJECTIVE: The premature loss of primary teeth in children may lead to numerous issues, such as decreased arch length/width/perimeter and increased malocclusion, increasing the need for orthodontic treatment. Moreover, a decrease in occlusal forces due to premature, unilateral tooth loss in the upper right quadrant in immature mice (i.e., pre-puberty), may lead to significant bilateral changes in the skull form (i.e., shape and size), especially the mandibular condyles after 3 weeks. In the present study, we aimed to determine the extent of the mandibular and condylar changes after unilateral …

Loss of alveolar bone from the edentulous jaws is a serious and common clinical problem, especially among the elderly. The retention and stability of dentures are reduced, but little is known about the pathogenesis of this bone loss. The existing data suggest that either local factors, for instance occlusal trauma, or systemic factors such as postmenopausal osteoporosis, contribute to edentulous alveolar bone resorption. This paper reviews the evidence for the aetiology of residual ridge resorption following tooth extraction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic periodontitis is a widespread disease affecting tooth-supporting structures that can lead to extensive loss of periodontal ligament and bone, ultimately resulting in tooth loss. Extensive evidence has demonstrated a strong association between age, metabolic disorders such as type II diabetes, oxidative stress and alveolar bone loss. The molecular players controlling bone maintenance and underlying age-related bone loss and its links to the general metabolism are currently the object of intense research.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Recent findings are summarized to …

Periodontal disease is the most frequent cause of tooth loss in humans and is the most prevalent disease associated with bone loss, including osteoporosis. Periodontal destruction is initiated by bacteria that colonize the tooth surface, leading to inflammation and bone resorption. To assess the roles of IL-1 and TNF in this process, studies were conducted in a Macaca fascicularis primate model of experimental periodontitis. Function-blocking soluble receptors to IL-1 and TNF were applied by local injection to sites with induced periodontal destruction and compared with similar sites injected …

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a heterogeneous hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system, with CMT1A in particular being the most common form. We encountered a 76-year-old woman with CMT1A who had a history of pain attacks and hearing loss from a young age, with motor symptoms manifesting late in life. Her pain and hearing loss may have been related to CMT. Our case also raises the possibility that neuropathic pain and hearing loss may precede the classic motor symptoms of CMT1A.

Tooth intrusion consists of the displacement of the tooth into its alveolus and is the most common trauma during early infancy. This work aims to evaluate the aspects related to tooth intrusion in primary teeth by monitoring 16 patients (22 teeth) for a period between 3 and 36 months. Of the patients who suffered from tooth intrusion, 56.25% were male and 91% of the intruding teeth were upper central incisors. In all cases the treatment indicated was to await spontaneous re-eruption: total re-eruption occurred in 42.5% of cases, partial re-eruption in 47% of cases and in 10.5% there was no re-

The dentist will be confronted unexpectedly with a dentoalveolar trauma patient. This patient has to be seen immediately and has to be treated adequately. The risk of overlooking trauma-related signs when examining these patients, can be minimized by following a strict protocol. This article describes a protocol for examination and treatment of a patient with a dentoalveolar trauma. The prognosis after treatment of the trauma is discussed. Also some recommendations regarding aftercare and prevention are presented.

The aim of this study was to analyze alveolar bone morphology following periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics. Treated patients were called for a full periodontal examination and a cone beam computed tomography scan. Mean treatment time was 6.08 months. Mean probing pocket depth was 2.7 mm. No gingival recessions were noted. In the maxilla, buccal plate thickness was 0.48 to 2.14 mm. In the mandible, bone thickness was 0.2 to 1.82 mm. Root fenestrations and dehiscences were present in up to 40% of the anterior teeth. Although clinical outcomes were favorable, due to the presence of
