Ten-year longitudinal study of gingival recession in dentists.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and progression/regression of gingival recession in a population sample with a high standard of oral hygiene and broad knowledge of the role of traumatic tooth brushing in the aetiology of gingival recession. MATERIAL & METHODS: Forty dental students in their final year at Dental School were examined for gingival recession in 1994 and 10 years later by the same examiner. Tooth brushing habits were ascertained in a questionnaire. Clinical parameters recorded for each recession were: recession height, probing depth, width of keratinized gingiva and bleeding on prob

The Oral Health Management in Patients With Fixed Orthodontic Treatment: An Evidence-Based Integrated Review.

INTRODUCTION: More and more patients with malocclusion are choosing fixed orthodontics to improve their chewing ability, maintain dental health and aesthetics. However, inappropriate timing of treatment, lack of management programmes during treatment and neglect of follow-up strategies after removal of appliances can lead to a succession of oral health problems. Therefore, oral health management throughout the patient's treatment period is necessary. This review systematically synthesises published evidence on oral health management in fixed orthodontic treatment patients. METHODS: Systematic

A 3-month randomized trial evaluating the effects of stannous fluoride bioavailability on gingivitis.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of formulation chemistry on gingivitis effects of two experimental 0.454% stannous fluoride (SnF2) dentifrices with low tin bioavailability versus positive and negative controls. METHODS: Adults with gingivitis were enrolled in this double-blind, parallel group, randomized clinical trial. Gingivitis was assessed with the Löe-Silness Gingivitis Index (LSGI) at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. The four treatments were: experimental dentifrice A (0.454% SnF2, pH 4.7, soluble tin = 592 ppm), experimental dentifrice B (0.454% SnF2, pH 5.8, soluble tin = 102 ppm), posi

An interdisciplinary intervention program to prevent early childhood caries in the Dominican Republic.

OBJECTIVE: The principal aim of this randomized clinical trial (RCT) was to test the effectiveness in the prevention of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) through an educational intervention program with the use of a printed guide for pediatricians and parents both designed by pediatric dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After ethical approval, the first step was to design the educational guides, which were based on the information obtained from a focus group with pediatricians (n = 3), phone interviews with mothers to toddlers' (n = 7), and the best evidence available about children's oral health. Effects of cervical restorations on the periodontal tissues: 5-year follow-up results of a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of resin composite restorations of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) on the occurrence/progression of gingival recession (GR), considering different tooth isolation techniques. METHODS: A randomized controlled split-mouth and blinded trial was carried out. Patients (n = 38) with at least two NCCLs were included. Before the cervical restoration placement, the NCCLs (181 teeth) were randomly allocated into two treatment groups according to the tooth isolation techniques: cotton roll or rubber dam. Experienced, trained, blinded, and calibrated examin

Prevalence of and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viral co-infections in HIV infected children in Lagos, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viral co-infections in HIV infected children in Lagos. METHOD: A cross-sectional study conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viral co-infection in children aged 2 months to 13 years. There were 187 HIV infected and 187 HIV naïve age, sex-matched controls. Blood samples of participants were assayed for the serologic markers [HBsAg, anti-HBc, and anti-HCV)] of HBV and HCV viral infections using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.

A comparison of Listerine® and sodium bicarbonate oral cleansing solutions on dental plaque colonisation and incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia in mechanically ventilated patients: a randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective oral hygiene has been proposed as a key factor in the reduction of dental plaque colonisation and subsequent development of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). Listerine(®) oral rinse, while used extensively in dental practice has rarely been tested in mechanically ventilated patients. Sodium bicarbonate as an oral rinse has been more commonly utilised in oral hygiene regimens in intensive care patients. AIM: To test the efficacies of the essential oil mouth rinse, Listerine(®) (Pfizer) and sodium bicarbonate in the reduction of dental plaque colonisation with respira

Clinical comparison of plaque inhibition effects of a novel stabilized stannous fluoride dentifrice and a chlorhexidine digluconate dentifrice using digital plaque imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the plaque inhibition efficacy of a novel 0.454% stannous fluoride (SnF2) test dentifrice with sodium hexametaphosphate and stannous chloride to a chlorhexidine digluconate (0.05%), aluminium lactate (0.8%), and aluminium fluoride marketed control dentifrice (Lacalut Aktiv or AlF3/Chx). METHODS: This was a randomized, two-treatment, two-period, double-blind crossover study that compared the SnF2 test dentifrice to the AlF3/Chx control dentifrice. Each of the two treatment periods lasted for 17 consecutive days of product use, during which subjects were required to brush

Oral health in relation to manifestations and severity of cystic fibrosis: a cross-sectional study.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by defective ion transport in epithelial cells, leading to the development of viscous mucus and glandular duct obstruction. Individuals with CF often present with gingival inflammation, dental enamel defects (DEDs), caries, and reduced salivary flow. This cross-sectional study of 82 patients with CF investigated the population's oral health in relation to systemic CF manifestations. Clinical oral examinations and medical record analyses were conducted for the entire sample, and panoramic radiographs were obtained for 26 pati

Surface and microstructural properties of denture base materials: Effects of manufacturing techniques, surface treatments, and aging protocols.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding denture base material properties under aging conditions is crucial for assessing their clinical performance and impact on oral health. This study evaluated the behaviour of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), dimethacrylate-based polymers (DMA), and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) denture base materials after aging (thermal, mechanical, chemical), based on parameters (surface, mechanical, sorptive, structural) and considering manufacturing techniques (auto-curing, milling, 3D printing). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disc-shaped specimens (2 mm × 8 mm, n = 10 per group; total n = 500)

Predicting oral hygiene practices through health behavior, perceived stress and self-efficacy in undergraduate dental students of Pakistan: a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Dental students face the rigorous demands of coursework, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and stress. These pressures can negatively influence self-efficacy and cause neglect in practicing healthy behaviors that encompass oral health. Identifying the associations of these variables with oral hygiene practices can help in the formulation of interventions tailored toward supporting young students. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of health behaviors, perceived stress and self-efficacy on oral hygiene practices among undergraduate dental students in Pakist
