South Asian Health. From Research to Practice and Policy: An Overview.

The US South Asian population has grown tremendously, and is now over 2.5 million. South Asians often face tremendous cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic and structural obstacles to good health, and face staggering cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer risk. Coupled with this is a paucity of detailed data on the population's unique CVD and cancer risk profiles, etiologic mechanisms, and effective interventions to address South Asian health disparities. This data gap compelled an initiative to develop more targeted research and evidence-based practice and policy approaches. The South Asian He

Strategies to promote uptake and use of intimate partner violence and child maltreatment knowledge: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child maltreatment (CM) are major social and public health problems. Knowledge translation (KT) of best available research evidence has been suggested as a strategy to improve the care of those exposed to violence, however research on how best to promote the uptake and use of IPV and CM evidence for policy and practice is limited. Our research asked: 1) What is the extent of IPV/CM-specific KT research? 2) What KT strategies effectively translate IPV/CM knowledge? and 3) What are the barriers and facilitators relevant to translating IPV/CM-specif

CRISPR-Based Genome-Editing Tools for Huntington's Disease Research and Therapy.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominantly-inherited neurodegenerative disease, which is caused by CAG trinucleotide expansion in exon 1 of the Huntingtin (HTT) gene. Although HD is a rare disease, its monogenic nature makes it an ideal model in which to understand pathogenic mechanisms and to develop therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases. Clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) is the latest technology for genome editing. Being simple to use and highly efficient, CRISPR-based genome-editing tools are rapidly gaining popularity in biomedical

Little Patients Big Discoveries: Potential Pediatric to Adult Neurogastroenterology Translation.

Pediatric neurogastroenterology conditions, including disorders of gut-brain interaction and motility disorders, affect millions of children worldwide. Owing to limited pediatric data, reference ranges and management are often extrapolated from adult studies. We review 4 pediatric neurogastroenterology areas where clinical science may translate and inform adult gastroenterology. Sucrase-isomaltase deficiency can be diagnosed through disaccharidase enzyme testing from duodenal mucosal biopsies. Dietary restriction and sacrosidase supplementation are effective, based on randomized controlled tri

A facility for laboratory mice with a natural microbiome at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Mice with a natural microbiome are a promising research model for basic and applied science because of their closer resemblance to the human superorganism compared to mice born and raised under stringent hygiene conditions. Consequently, biomedical therapies developed and tested in “Wildling mice” hold great potential for successful translation into clinical applications. Over the past four years, scientists, veterinarians and institutional officials at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, supported by the University Hospital Erlangen, have designed a facility for Wildling mice and developed

Can we know if donor trust expires? About trust relationships and time in the context of open consent for future data use.

As donor trust legitimises research, trust is vital for research in the fields of biomedicine, genetics, translational medicine and personalised medicine. For parts of the donor community, the consent signature is a sign of trust in research. Many consent processes in biomedical research ask donors to provide their data for an unspecified future use, which introduces uncertainty of the unknown. This uncertainty can jeopardise donor trust or demand blind trust. But which donor wants to trust blindly? To reduce this uncertainty, we explore first, which future-proof actors donors could trust when

Focused Ultrasound Modulation of PGC-1α Pathways in Neurological Disease: Mechanistic Rationale and Translational Opportunities.

The brain's disproportionate energy demand creates an enduring bioenergetic imperative where mitochondrial performance directly determines synaptic resilience and neuronal survival. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) has emerged as a master transcriptional regulator orchestrating mitochondrial biogenesis, antioxidant defenses, proteostasis, and neuroplasticity, with dysregulation of this axis representing a convergent pathogenic mechanism across Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, stroke, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Partial-EMT in oral squamous cell carcinoma: molecular circuitry and clinical translation.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a prevalent malignancy with high morbidity and mortality. Globally, about 400 000 people are affected, often with a poor quality of life. Its high mortality is mainly due to its aggressive growth and tendency to spread. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a central regulatory hub driving tumor cell migration and invasion by enabling changes in cell characteristics. During EMT, epithelial cells gradually take on mesenchymal traits, gaining mobility and spreading more easily. Recent multi-omics studies show that many cancer cells exist in a hybrid or

Therapeutic Translation of Epicardial Adipose Tissue Targeting in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction: How Far Are We?

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) exhibits an inflammatory-metabolic phenotype in association with multiple factors. Among them, epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), a type of visceral adipose tissue surrounding the heart, has been gaining attention. EAT expansion is associated with the development of HFpEF, the increased risk for heart failure-related mortality in patients with HFpEF, independent of age, body mass index, diabetes, and sex. Thus, reducing EAT expansion has been proposed as a promising therapeutic strategy for treating HFpEF. Although specific treatment for EAT
