Penile Urethral Hypospadias with Two Fistulae and Diverticulum in a Saanen Kid.

Hypospadias is a rare congenital defect reported in most animal species and humans. This case study reports a hypospadiac case in a goat kid with urethral diverticulum diagnosed in Sudan for the first time. A 45-day-old male kid was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST), with a history of an increasing prescrotal swelling. At presentation in the clinic the kid was bright and alert and the vital parameters were within the normal physiological range. Ultrasonography was performed to assess the integrity of

[A case of psychological non-neuropathic bladder successfully diagnosed by continuous monitoring of detrusor pressure].

We report a case of psychological non-neuropathic bladder difficult to diagnose and treat. A 44-year-old woman was admitted to the Department of Urology of the Asahikawa Medical College Hospital with complaints of difficulty in micturition and urinary incontinence. Urodynamic studies revealed underactive function of the detrusor and incompetent urethra. She was instructed in self intermittent catheterization for difficulty in micturition. Drug therapy, electrical stimulation and vesicourethral suspension were not effective to control urinary incontinence. Since uninhibited detrusor contraction

Unusual foreign body in the urethra.

Numerous cases of intraurethral foreign bodies of great variety and unusual nature have been reported. Such foreign bodies are usually introduced for sexual stimulation and/or during an intoxicated or confused state. Resulting symptoms usually involve the urinary frequency, dysuria, nocturia, hematuria, gross bleeding per urethra, difficulty in voiding, or complete urinary retention. Depending on the type of foreign body and its location, various methods of removal have been described, including meatotomy, cystoscopy, internal or external urethrotomy, suprapubic cystostomy, Fogarty catheteriza

Imaging Approach and Diagnosis in a Case of Combined Intraperitoneal: Extraperitoneal Urinary Bladder Injuries in a Child.

Urinary bladder rupture is a rare injury, both in adults and in children. Urinary bladder rupture in children is often due to road traffic trauma and is mostly of the intraperitoneal variety due to the higher anatomical location of the urinary bladder. Combined, post-traumatic, intraperitoneal, and extraperitoneal injuries, whether in adults or in children, are rare. The patient reported by us is a rare case of combined intra and extraperitoneal injuries in a four-year-old male child, without significant pelvic fractures. The boy, who sustained a road traffic accident a few hours earlier and w

Neuroblastoma causing acute urinary retention: a rare presentation.

BACKGROUND: Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children under the age of 5 years and, after acute lymphoblastic leukemia, is the second most prevalent malignancy in childhood. Acute urinary retention is rare in children, especially due to a neuroblastoma. OBJECTIVES: To present the potential complications of a pelvic neuroblastoma. CASE REPORT: A 9-month-old infant presented with urinary retention that had been attributed in the past to the infant's chronic constipation. She was catheterized and a large residual of urine was obtained; she was discharged home. She re

Save the Bladder: Continent Urinary Diversion as Best Practice for Patients With Refractory Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Refractory neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction presents an obstinate clinical problem. For patients who fail nonsurgical measures, we advocate for bladder-sparing, continent urinary diversion as the optimal approach to management. METHODS: The arguments presented herein were informed by a review of the contemporary literature and our longitudinal institutional experience caring for patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. RESULTS: Bladder-sparing, continent urinary diversion comprises procedures such as bladder augmentation, creation of a continent cathe

Profiling the Urobiota in a Pediatric Population with Neurogenic Bladder Secondary to Spinal Dysraphism.

The human bladder has been long thought to be sterile until that, only in the last decade, advances in molecular biology have shown that the human urinary tract is populated with microorganisms. The relationship between the urobiota and the development of urinary tract disorders is now of great interest. Patients with spina bifida (SB) can be born with (or develop over time) neurological deficits due to damaged nerves that originate in the lower part of the spinal cord, including the neurogenic bladder. This condition represents a predisposing factor for urinary tract infections so that the mo

Neonatal urinary ascites caused by urinary tract obstruction: two case reports.

Two cases of neonatal urinary ascites are reported, one (case 1) caused by posterior urethral valves associated with right vesicoureteral reflux, and the other (case 2) secondary to bilateral obstructed megaureter--a very rare cause. Abdominal distension, electrolyte imbalance, and an elevated BUN/serum creatinine ratio were noted at the time of hospitalization in both cases. These laboratory values promptly returned to normal after the establishment of appropriate urinary drainage, accomplished through bladder catheterization in case 1 and bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy in case 2. In case

[Detubularized right-hemicolonic continent urinary reservoir with plicated terminal ileum].

A continent urinary reservoir which consists of 1) detubularized caecum, ascending colon and the right half of transverse colon. 2) anastomosis of ureter and ascending colon with antireflex technique, and 3) plicated terminal ileal segment for continence and catheter insertion was created in 12 patients after radical cystectomy for urothelioma. Our method to create a continent urinary reservoir is simple and technically easy. It can, therefore, provide patients' satisfaction with low incidence of complication. However, such continent urinary reservoir diversion should be performed only for car

Unilateral Purple Urine Bag Syndrome in an Elderly Man with Nephrostomy.

Purple urine bag syndrome, or PUBS, is a manifestation of a complicated urinary tract infection. Organisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Enterococcus can reside in urinary catheters and exhibit the purple color detected in this phenomenon. Risk factors described for this syndrome include the use of plastic urinary catheterization, the malfunctioning of the catheter, and long-term institutionalization. This disorder could be the earliest presentation of a urinary catheter flaw and requires immediate intervention and revision. In our case, a male resident of nursing home presented with …

Limitations of the antibody-coated bacteria test in patients with neurogenic bladders.

A Fairley washout test and antibody-coated bacteria (ACB) test were performed for 35 urinary tract infections in 32 patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The Fairley test result was used as a standard reference and was combined with clinical and ureteral catheterization culture findings when doubt existed. The Fairley test localized 35 infections: 9 to the kidney, 24 to the bladder, and 2 to the prostate. The ACB test results were positive in five of the nine renal infections and negative in four. In three of the four patients with negative results, radiological, clinical, or ureteral

Case report: purple urine bag syndrome.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) was first reported in 1978. PUBS is rare, occurs predominantly in constipated women, chronically catheterized and associated with some bacterial urinary infections that produce sulphatase/phosphatase. The etiology is due to indigo (blue) and indirubin (red) or to their mixture that becomes purple. A chain reaction begins in the gastrointestinal tract with tryptophan as described in the article.

Small-bowel obstruction caused by a long-term indwelling urinary catheter.

The first known case report of a small-bowel obstruction caused by a long-term indwelling Foley catheter is presented. The balloon of the catheter passed into and obstructed the lumen of the distal ileum through a vesicoenteric fistula created by chronic irritation. With the exception of recurrent urinary-tract infections, complications of urinary catheters are rare. The patient presented a diagnostic dilemma that was solved with a preoperative computed tomographic scan.

[The Introduction of Pubic Hair into the Bladder : A Possibility of an Alternate Mechanism].

In patients with an indwelling Foley catheter, pubic hair may be introduced into the bladder. This is believed to occur because the pubic hairs are pushed into the bladder during catheter replacement. However, compared withpatients on intermittent self-catheterization, patients withan indwelling Foley catheter have fewer chances of their pubic hair being pushed into the bladder. This suggests the presence of an alternate mechanism responsible for introducing pubic hair into the bladder during catheter replacement. We performed several experiments to identify this. In a urethral model created w

Intermittent self-catheterisation: the gold standard for individuals with bladder dysfunction.

Intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) has long been identified as the 'gold standard' for drainage of the bladder for individuals with bladder dysfunction. This article will outline identification of appropriate individuals, the types of intermittent self-catheters available, outline how it can improve quality of life for sufferers of bladder dysfunction, outline the complications that may occur and finally, suggest why it should be recommended as the 'gold standard' if it is taught and done correctly.
