This is an analysis of 75 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate and/or uvula treated with radical radiation therapy alone (64) or in conjunction with planned neck dissection (11) between October 1964 and September 1983. Despite advances in ultrasound technology, the sensitivity for detection of facial clefts at the routine mid-trimester details scan remains relatively poor. This can be improved by the use of a three-point ultrasound screening protocol, although this is not routine in many countries. OBJECTIVE: To assess subjective and objective outcomes in selected patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome who underwent microdebrider-assisted extended uvulopalatoplasty (MEUP).
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Fifty patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome who had substantial retropalatal obstruction and more than 10 events per hour on the respiratory disturbance index (RDI) and who underwent MEUP with 6 months of follow-up. Patients with a Friedman palate position of grade 4 and a tonsil size of grade 3 or 4 were excluded.

OBJECTIVE: Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is a common treatment for snoring, but up to 50% of patients obtain little or no sustained benefit. We investigated whether pre-operative measurements from lateral cephalometry, acoustic rhinometry, analysis of snoring sounds, and body mass index (BMI) could predict which snorers benefited from LAUP.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Fifty-five snoring patients were assessed pre- and 6 months post-LAUP. Snoring severity was assessed by objective sound level recorded during polysomnography, and a Snoring Symptoms Inventory (SSI) questionnaire.
