From Thought to Senses: Assessing the Relationship Between the Generation Effect and Multisensory Facilitation.

The current study investigated whether the generation effect, a memory advantage for self-generated verbal information, is enhanced in multisensory conditions. Such a finding would be consistent with the multisensory facilitation effect, a phenomenon wherein multiple sensory inputs may reduce the cognitive load required to process and respond to co-occurring stimuli from multiple senses. Although extensive research has explored the generation effect, the multisensory aspect of this task has been overlooked. In the current study, we aimed to determine if the generation effect is modulated by th

Applicability of the nonverbal learning disability paradigm for children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22qll.2 deletion syndrome (22qllDS) is the most common microdeletion in humans. Nonverbal learning disability (NLD) has been used to describe the strengths and deficits of children with 22q11DS, but the applicability of the label for this population has seldom been systematically evaluated. The goal of the current study was to address how well the NLD diagnosis characterizes children and adolescents with 22q11DS. A total of 74 children and adolescents with 22q11DS were given neurocognitive, socioemotional, and academic assessments to measure aspects of NLD. Of the cohort, 20% met at…

Possible role of repetitive practice of activities requiring reflexive responses in the treatment of Tourette's disorder.

We report 2 boys, 11 and 7 years old, whose Tourette's disorder improved significantly after a period of repeated, sustained practice of activities requiring reflexive responses One boy engaged in physical exercise including hand-eye co-ordination (table tennis for 6 hours every weekday) and the other learned foreign languages (5 languages within 3 years). Tics may be thought of as a kind of overflow of energy, and excessive energy consumption with physical or mental exercise may improve the motor disorder and associated comorbidities. However, the exercise may require a quick, reflexive respo

Why is learning and memory dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes limited to older adults?

Review of the literature on the cognitive correlates and consequences of Type 2 diabetes reveals two very intriguing findings. Not only are verbal learning and memory skills most likely to be disrupted as compared to other cognitive skills (e.g. attention, executive function; psychomotor efficiency), but these mnestic deficits appear to be restricted to individuals with diabetes who are older than 60-65 years of age. Middle-aged adults with either Type 2 or Type 1 diabetes are apparently protected insofar as researchers have only infrequently reported learning and memory impairments in that ag…

Hypothyroidism and cognition: preliminary evidence for a specific defect in memory.

The effect(s) of hypothyroidism on adult brain cognitive function are poorly understood. We performed a series of neuropsychological tests i … be attributed to depression or to practice effects. Thyroid state did not affect immediate recall, verbal learning, inhibitory efficiency, information processing speed, or attention switching. Athyrosis is associated with a decrement in delayed recall of verbal information but not in other objective measures of cognition, suggesting that the memory decrement of …

DC/TMD Examiner Protocol: Longitudinal Evaluation on Interexaminer Reliability.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the interexaminer agreement between one "reference" (gold standard) and each of two examiners, using the DC/TMD examination method, Axis I and to evaluate whether a recalibration changed reliability values. METHODS: Participants (4 healthy and 12 TMD patients) in 2013 underwent a clinical examination according to DC/TMDs, Axis I. In 2014, additionally 16 participants (4 healthy and 12 TMD patients) were recruited. Two trainee examiners (one more experienced) and one "reference examiner" (gold standard) at both sessions assessed the parti

Randomized clinical study of the prevention of pulmonary complications after thoracoabdominal resection by two different breathing techniques.

AIMS: This study aims to describe the experiences of Learning Disability Nurses (RNLDs) when they are with clients who may be in pain but who cannot communicate their feelings verbally. BACKGROUND: Research indicates that general nurses often find it difficult to perceive their patients' pain accurately, but no studies refer to the experiences of RNLDs. For people with severe learning disabilities this could lead not only to unnecessary suffering, but also to long-term tissue damage and may even prove fatal. METHOD: A phenomenological approach was adopted, as unrecognized pain is a subject a

Spatial planning deficits in limb apraxia.

Geschwind (1975) proposed a disconnection model in which an apraxic subject is unable to carry out movements to command because the left hemisphere that comprehended the verbal command is disconnected from the right premotor and motor areas which controls the left hand. An alternate model, however, proposes that apraxia results from destruction of spatiotemporal representations of learned movement stored in the left hemisphere (Heilman, 1979). The disconnection hypothesis would predict that apraxic subjects should be able to correctly imitate gestures and correctly use actual tools since these

Cognitive dysfunction in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a possible role for neuromodulatory immune molecules.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X chromosome-linked disease characterized by progressive physical disability, immobility, and premature death in affected boys. Underlying the devastating symptoms of DMD is the loss of dystrophin, a structural protein that connects the extracellular matrix to the cell cytoskeleton and provides protection against contraction-induced damage in muscle cells, leading to chronic peripheral inflammation. However, dystrophin is also expressed in neurons within specific brain regions, including the hippocampus, a structure associated with learning and memory fo

Spatial exploration and navigation in Down syndrome and Williams syndrome.

We know little about the ability to explore and navigate large-scale space for people with intellectual disability (ID). In this cross-syndrome study, individuals with Down syndrome (DS), individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) and typically developing children (TD; aged 5-11 years) explored virtual environments with the goal of learning where everything was within the environment (Experiment 1) or to find six stars (Experiment 2). There was little difference between the WS and DS groups when the goal was simply to learn about the environment with no specific destination to be reached (Experim

Vocabulary and expressive morpho-syntax in individuals with Down syndrome: Links to narration.

BACKGROUND: Narrative ability is crucial for social participation in everyday and school life but involves different language abilities such as vocabulary and morpho-syntax. This is particularly difficult for individuals who display both language and cognitive impairments. Previous research has identified productive vocabulary as a possible key factor for narrative performance in individuals with Down syndrome. Considering a close connection between lexical and morpho-syntactic performance within language acquisition and the distinct impairments that individuals with Down syndrome display conc

Brain-behavior relationships in incidental learning of non-native phonetic categories.

Research has implicated the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) in mapping acoustic-phonetic input to sound category representations, both in native speech perception and non-native phonetic category learning. At issue is whether this sensitivity reflects access to phonetic category information per se or to explicit category labels, the latter often being required by experimental procedures. The current study employed an incidental learning paradigm designed to increase sensitivity to a difficult non-native phonetic contrast without inducing explicit awareness of the categorical nature of the s

How to get by with half a loop - An investigation of visual and auditory codes in a case of impaired phonological short-term memory (pSTM).

In the field of cognitive neuropsychology of phonological short-term memory (pSTM), a key debate surrounds the issue of how impairment on tasks deemed to tap this system imply a dissociable phonological input and output buffer system, with the implication that impairments can be fractionated across disruption to separate functional components (Nickels, Howard & Best, 1997). This study presents CT, a conduction aphasic who showed no impairment on basic auditory discrimination tasks, but had very poor nonword repetition. Clear-cut examples of such cases are very rare (see Jacquemot, Dupoux & Bac

High-definition tDCS of the temporo-parietal cortex enhances access to newly learned words.

Learning associations between words and their referents is crucial for language learning in the developing and adult brain and for language re-learning after neurological injury. Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the posterior temporo-parietal cortex has been suggested to enhance this process. However, previous studies employed standard tDCS set-ups that induce diffuse current flow in the brain, preventing the attribution of stimulation effects to the target region. This study employed high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) that allowed the current flow to be constrained t

Executive dysfunction is the primary cognitive impairment in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Cognitive difficulties appear to be a more prevalent clinical feature in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) than previously thought, and significant cognitive impairment is prevalent in a majority of patients PSP patients not considered clinically demented. The neurocognitive performance of 200 patients with PSP across multiple sites was examined with a variety of commonly used neuropsychological tests. Results indicate primary executive dysfunction (e.g., 74% impaired on the Frontal Assessment Battery, 55% impaired on Initiation/Perseveration subscale of the Dementia Rating Scale), with mil
