Influence of aging on hyaluronic acid concentration in the vocal folds of female rats.

UNLABELLED: The vibration of the vocal fold lamina propria is an important factor involved in vocal production and aging may change the amount of hyaluronic acid in the vocal fold leading to dysphonia. AIMS: This study compares the concentration of hyaluronic acid in vocal folds of aged and young female rats. STUDY DESIGN: experimental. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the vocal cords of 13 female rats divided into two groups: five aged rats and eight young ones. The tissue concentration of hyaluronic acid was determined using the fluorimetric method with the hyaluronic acid binding-protein c

Use of continuous positive airway pressure in the acute management of laryngeal paralysis in a cat.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been is used widely in humans to manage obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, but it has not been widely used in animals. A brachycephalic cat, with previously undiagnosed laryngeal paralysis, that developed acute upper respiratory tract obstruction on recovery from anaesthesia, is presented. The condition was managed by CPAP, delivered via a facial mask.

Localization of transient receptor potential channel vanilloid subfamilies in the mouse larynx.

CONCLUSION: Laryngeal epithelium contains TRPV1, 2, 3 and 4, which may act as laryngeal nociceptors perceiving luminal noxious stimuli, play an important role in thermal sensation, osmotic sensation, and are also related to pathological conditions, such as inflammatory response, genesis of cough, asthma. OBJECTIVE: Expression of TRPV1, 2, 3 and 4 in the normal CBA/J mouse larynx was analysed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBA/J mice were used in this study. The localizations of TRPV1, 2, 3 and 4 in the laryngeal epithelium were investigated by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical stu

Separate detection of vocal fold vibration by optoreflectometry: a study of biphonation on excised porcine larynges.

This study describes a novel system allowing the noncontact measurement of vibration of each vocal fold. The system is based on reflectometry, i.e. measurement of light bouncing off a vibrating object. The system works in natural light and is sensitive, compact, and inexpensive. We have used this system for separate and simultaneous detection of the vibration of each vocal fold in excised porcine larynges. Normal conditions of vibration and asymmetry of tension leading to biphonations were studied. Analysis of each vibrating cycle reveals interaction between the vocal folds allowing synchronou

Glottic closing force in an anesthetized, awake pig model: biomechanical effects on the laryngeal closure reflex resulting from altered central facilitation.

Reflex sphincteric closure of the larynx, essential to lower airway protection, is most efficiently achieved through strong reflex adduction by both vocal cords. Because the conversion of a bilaterally evoked response to a unilaterally evoked one appears anesthesia-dependent, we hypothesized that central facilitation is an essential component of a bilateral adductor reflex and that its disturbance could result in weakened sphincteric closure. Six adult 50 kg pigs were used in this study. During electrical stimulation of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) using bipolar p

Technical approach for reanimation of the chronically denervated larynx by means of functional electrical stimulation.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle to produce vocal fold abduction offers an alternative approach to current surgical therapies for bilateral vocal fold paralysis. The purpose of this study was to characterize the application of FES to chronically denervated PCA muscles. Specific goals were to develop a stimulus delivery system for the PCA muscle, determine a practical means of implantation, and identify stimulus parameters effective in activating chronically denervated muscle. Seventeen dogs were implanted with planar electrode arrays 3 months

Diseases of the larynx.

The procedure for examining the patient with laryngeal disease depends largely upon the degree to which its respiration is impaired. Laryngoscopy and electromyography are the principal diagnostic tools. Common laryngeal diseases, diagnoses, and treatments are discussed.

Laryngeal hemiplegia in draft horses. A review of 27 cases.

Case records of 27 draft horses with laryngeal hemiplegia were reviewed. Twenty-one horses were treated by ventriculectomy with or without prosthetic laryngoplasty, and 17 owners were contacted to determine the results. Fifteen horses improved after surgery and were able to perform to the owners' expectations. Performance improved significantly and hospitalization was shorter after ventriculectomy alone. Results of this study indicate that the clinical signs of exercise intolerance and excessive inspiratory noise associated with left laryngeal hemiplegia in draft horses can be treated successf

The effect of laryngeal nerve stimulation on phonation: a glottographic study using an in vivo canine model.

The present investigation was designed to examine the effect of change in vocal fold mass and stiffness on vocal fold vibration. To do this, the effect of variation in superior laryngeal nerve stimulation (SLNS) and recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation (RLNS) was studied Photoglottography (PGG), electroglottography (EGG), and subglottic pressure (Psub) were measured in seven mongrel dogs using an in vivo canine model of phonation. The PGG, EGG, and Psub signals were examined at three frequencies (100, 130, and 160 Hz) for SLNS and RLNS, using a constant rate of air flow. Increasing SLNS, whic

Glottal adjustment for regulating vocal intensity. An experimental study.

Living canine larynx was insufflated from the transected trachea with and without contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid, cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles, in order to study the control mechanism of vocal intensity at the glottal level. The contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were simulated with mechanical retraction, while the thyroarytenoid muscle was contracted with electrical stimulation. The vocal intensity (SPL), subglottal pressure and mean flow rate were measured simultaneously, and the aerodynamic power (pressure multiplied by flow rate) and

The effect of laryngoplasty on pharyngeal function in the horse.

Using fluoroscopic techniques and videotape recordings, a study of normal deglutition was made in 2 ponies. Paryngeal function was studied at intervals after laryngoplasty on 1 animal and after a sham technique on the other. Two clinical cases of laryngeal paralysis, which had been treated by laryngoplasty, were also examined. In the 2 experimental ponies, liquid food passed into the lower respiratory tract post-operatively. One of the clinical cases appeared to swallow solid food normally, but some food material entered the larynx of the other horse. It is suggested that pharyngeal dysfunctio

[Intraluminal surgical procedures for glottic enlargement in bilateral vocal fold paralysis in adduction].

Bilateral vocal fold paralysis with paramedian position of the vocal chords can result from iatrogenic or traumatic nerve injuries, neurologic disorders and extralaryngeal malignancies and usually causes significant shortness of breath while the voice is only slightly affected. Only about 10% of the affected patients tolerate the narrowed airway caused by bilateral vocal fold paralysis in adduction, so most patients are candidates for a surgical intervention. Today, a range of intraluminal surgical procedures for enlargement of the glottis in bilateral vocal fold paralysis have been described

Minocycline treatment reverses ultrasonic vocalization production deficit in a mouse model of Fragile X Syndrome.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited form of intellectual disability, with behaviors characteristic of autism. Symptoms include abnormal social behavior, repetitive behavior, communication disorders, and seizures. Many symptoms of FXS have been replicated in the Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice. Whether Fmr1 KO mice exhibit vocal communication deficits is not known. By recording ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) produced by adult male mice during mating, we show that USV calling rate (number of calls/second) is reduced in Fmr1 KO mice compared to WT controls. The WT control and Fmr1 KO gr

Determinants of mother-young contact in Norway rats.

Rat dams choose to care for their pups in a relatively warm area, apparently because they have an elevated thermal set point for the regulation of their body temperature. Since the duration of their contact bouts with their pups is limited by an acute hyperthermia that they experience while on the pups, their choice limits the time that they can spend with their pups. When dams could choose the temperature at which they cared for their young they spent only about half the time in contact with their offspring as did dams caring for their pups at the ambient temperature of the laboratory. We con

Yearling laryngeal function in Thoroughbreds that underwent a laryngoplasty differs from controls.

BACKGROUND: Yearling laryngeal function (YLF) is frequently assessed at the time of sale and the outcomes of these assessments can have significant economic implications. The YLF of horses that subsequently underwent a prosthetic laryngoplasty (PL) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesised horses with YLF ≥grade II.2 would be at increased risk of requiring PL, compared with YLF <grade II.2. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control. METHODS: There were 150 PL cases from 2019 to 2021 with an available yearling post-sale videoendoscopic examination and 600 controls. Two observers unaware of the outcome graded

Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis of Aerodynamic and Elasticity Forces During Vocal Fold Vibration.

The effect of the intraglottal vortices on the glottal flow waveform was explored using flow-structure-interaction (FSI) modeling. These vortices form near the superior aspect of the vocal folds during the closing phase of the folds' vibration. The geometry of the vocal fold was based on the well-known M5 model. The model did not include a vocal tract to remove its inertance effect on the glottal flow. Material properties for the cover and body layers of the folds were set using curve fit to experimental data of tissue elasticity. A commercially available FSI solver was used to perform simulat
