Restoration of hearing with an auditory brainstem implant in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 2--case report.

A 25-year-old male with neurofibromatosis type 2 had hearing restored with an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) after removal of an acoustic schwannoma. The ABI allows the patient to discern many different environment sounds and is a significant adjunct to lip-reading, enabling conversation with people who have clear pronunciation without the necessity for writing.

Cognitive functions in chronic locked-in syndrome: a report of two cases.

We describe a 38-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man who have been living in a "locked-in" condition 3 and 2 years, respectively. Extensive neuropsychological testing, carried out with a communication aid system (writing apparatus) which exploited the patients residual eye movements, showed preserved cognitive abilities in spite of the long standing de-efferentation.

Georg Büchner: Anatomist of the animal brain and the human mind.

The writer Georg Büchner (1813-1837) is considered one of the giants of German literature. Comparatively less well known, however, is the fact that Büchner was also a gifted neuroanatomist who completed his medical studies with a dissertation on the nervous system of the barbel (a freshwater fish with a high incidence in the River Rhine) and gave a lecture on cranial nerves shortly afterward, hoping to secure a position at the University of Zurich. In the copious secondary literature on Büchner, it has often been discussed whether and how his poetic and scientific writings were interrelated. I…

Evaluating 'Safe in the Sun', a curriculum programme for primary schools.

Eleven schools in the south of England took part in a trial of 'Safe in the Sun', a curriculum programme for primary school aged pupils. Case study methodology and the 'draw and write' technique were combined to evaluate changes in pupils' perceptions of the effects of the sun on their skin. Teachers were free to use the materials, consisting of a teacher's handbook and video, as they wished. Pupils in all schools showed higher levels of awareness of sun-safety measures in post-intervention studies compared with the levels recorded 4 months earlier. Chi-square analysis revealed that those pupi

Language Control in Diglossic and Bilingual Contexts: An Event-Related fMRI Study Using Picture Naming Tasks.

The diglossic socio-linguistic situation in Arabic refers to the use of two language varieties in everyday life. Spoken Arabic (SA) is acquired first and used for everyday informal communication, while Literary Arabic (LA) is acquired at school and used for reading, writing and formal functions. Accordingly, the question whether LA functions as a second language had repeatedly been raised. In this study participants performed picture naming in SA in: (i) a simple naming context (SNc); (ii) a first language selection diglossic context mixing SA and LA (fLSc) and (iii) a second language selectio…

A formal analysis of alexia in persistent aura and a comparison to acquired pure alexia.

A patient is reported with reversible pure alexia in the context of migraine with aura. Following previous, anecdotal reports, the present study is the first to formally assess word reading, writing, and other linguistic and visual processing and to compare these to a patient with stroke-related pure alexia. The reading impairment, suggestive of letter-by-letter reading, was observed across 7 days but had remitted at a 3-month follow-up. The deficit also affected recognition of letters, suggesting a functional impairment at the level of letter recognition, not just word reading. It went along …

[A qualitative analysis of spelling mistakes and a systematic supportive learning instruction of spelling disorder].

This paper explains how a qualitative analysis of spelling mistakes (Oldenburger Fehleranalyse, Thomé & Thomé, 2014) may be used to select learning materials according to individual needs. The pre-post design with control group serves to evaluate the effects of an intervention that is systematic and learning supportive for pupils with a diagnosed spelling disorder (ages 12 to 14; 6th-8th grade). Therapists of the experimental group were instructed to apply a series of linguistic and psycholinguistic criteria when creating the material for instruction and when carrying out the therapy. Recognition of oral spelling is diagnostic of the central reading processes.

The task of recognition of oral spelling (stimulus: "C-A-T", response: "cat") is often administered to individuals with acquired written language disorders, yet there is no consensus about the underlying cognitive processes. We adjudicate between two existing hypotheses: Recognition of oral spelling uses central reading processes, or recognition of oral spelling uses central spelling processes in reverse. We tested the recognition of oral spelling and spelling to dictation abilities of a single individual with acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia. She was impaired relative to matched controls in s

Unsolicited written narratives as a methodological genre in terminal illness: challenges and limitations.

Stories about illness have proven invaluable in helping health professionals understand illness experiences. Such narratives have traditionally been solicited by researchers through interviews and the collection of personal writings, including diaries. These approaches are, however, researcher driven; the impetus for the creation of the story comes from the researcher and not the narrator. In recent years there has been exponential growth in illness narratives created by individuals, of their own volition, and made available for others to read in print or as Internet accounts. We sought to det…

Morphological constancy in spelling: a comparison of children with dyslexia and typically developing children.

The spellings of many English words follow a principle of morphological constancy. For example, musician includes the c of music, even though the pronunciation of this letter changes. With other words, such as explanation and explain, the spellings of morphemes are not retained when affixes are added. We asked whether children with dyslexia use root morphemes to aid their spelling of morphologically complex words. If so, they should sometimes produce misspellings such as 'explaination' for explanation. Our results suggest that children with dyslexia adhere to the principle of morphological con

The role of morphology and short vowelization in reading Arabic among normal and dyslexic readers in grades 3, 6, 9, and 12.

This study was an investigation of several Arabic reading measures among dyslexics and normal Arabic readers across different ages (grades 3, 6, 9, and 12): the role of morphology, short vowelization (phonological and syntactic skills), spelling, reading isolated words, and reading comprehension. The results of the one-way ANOVAs indicated clear differences between the dyslexic readers and the normal readers on all reading measures. However, the stepwise regression analysis revealed consistent orthographic results: morphology (identification and/or production) and spelling were generally the m

Reading fluency: the whole is more than the parts.

This study examined the relative contributions of phonological awareness, orthographic pattern recognition, and rapid letter naming to fluent word and connected-text reading within a dyslexic sample of 123 children in second and third grades. Participants were assessed on a variety of fluency measures and reading subskills. Correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were carried out to explore these relationships. The results demonstrate that phonological awareness, rapid letter naming, and orthographic pattern recognition contribute to word-reading skills. Furthermore, rapid n

[Assessment of the Dichotic Listening Test by Feldmann in children with developmental reading and spelling disorders].

In Germany the dD by Feldmann is a frequently used test in child assessment. Unknown, however, is the validity of the dD in the assessment of children with specific developmental language disorders. The dD by Feldmann are pairs of three-syllable content words which are presented dichotically. In this controlled cross-sectional study 65 children took the dichotic listening test by Feldmann (dD). The experimental group comprised 34 children with developmental reading and spelling disorders. The control group comprised 31 children with normal reading and spelling development. A case study of an English-Japanese bilingual with monolingual dyslexia.

We report the case of AS, a 16 year-old English/Japanese bilingual boy, whose reading/writing difficulties are confined to English only. AS was born in Japan to a highly literate Australian father and English mother, and goes to a Japanese selective senior high school in Japan. His spoken language at home is English. AS's reading in logographic Japanese Kanji and syllabic Kana is equivalent to that of Japanese undergraduates or graduates. In contrast, his performance in various reading and writing tests in English as well as tasks involving phonological processing was very poor, even when comp…

Smoking and drinking as psychological tools in stressful social situations: assumptions of fiction writers.

The paper reports a study of one potential source of information concerning use and effectiveness of alcohol and cigarettes, which may facilitate habit formation through social learning. A total of 250 episodes from contemporary books of fiction involving either smoking or drinking were analyzed according to various situational and psychological variables characterizing them, including the context, motives preceding consumption, and effects. It was found that smoking and drinking occurred most often in social situations in which intense negative emotions were aroused. The behavioral and emotio
