The extent to which schistosomiasis can be controlled through careful design of the irrigation works, the operation schedule, the location of villages and the provision of safe water supplies and sanitation in smallholder irrigation schemes at Mushandike in south-east Zimbabwe is reported. Two groups of children (6-15 years) from a Schistosoma haematobium endemic area were followed for 9 months after praziquantel treatment. Seventy-three children came from an area of high infection while 67 children came from an area of low infection.
