Cat eye syndrome with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

A 17-year-old male diagnosed as having Cat Eye Syndrome (CES) with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism showed short stature and no development of secondary sex characteristics. Exogeneous gonadotropin replacement therapy combining human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) was started. As a result, the short stature and androgen deficiency were relieved. The critical region of CES was tetrasomy of 22 pter-->q11. Abnormalities of other chromosomes which cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism may exist, thus further investigation is needed.

VATERL: an epidemiologic analysis of risk factors.

This work analyzed the incidence of risk factors in 138 cases presenting two or more of five components defining VATERL, with no other recognized unrelated anomalies: vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and preaxial defects of the upper limbs, including polydactyly of the thumb. The 138 infants were ascertained among 1,811,461 births examined in the 1967-1994 period by the Latin-American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations: ECLAMC. One healthy and one malformed control newborn infant were matched to each

Coloplasty for congenital short colon.

Seventy-two patients with complete short colon (CSC) were treated at the authors' institution between 1971 and 1994. Initially, one-stage coloplasty with abdominoperineal pull-through was performed in 10 neonates, with a 50% survival rate. The subsequent 62 patients had staged management in which a window colostomy was performed at the time of presentation. Of the 50 survivors in this group, 20 had coloplasty with a abdominoperineal or sacroabdominoperineal pull-through by June 1994. A protective ileostomy was done at the time of coloplasty in 10 patients, and was closed 6 to 12 weeks later. T

[Computed tomography and anorectal malformations. Their postoperative evaluation].

In spite of great progress in surgical treatment of anorectal malformations, fecal incontinence is still, in variable degrees, a frequent and unpleasant postsurgical sequela. The most frequent causes of incontinence are: i) the incorrect placement of the pulled-through colon in the levator ani and sphincteric muscular complex during abdominoperineal surgical procedures; ii) the poor development of sphincteric musculature; iii) the associated sacral anomalies. Postoperative CT helps to evaluate all the above-mentioned conditions, in view of possible new surgical procedure for improving continen

[Clinical and neurohistological aspects of constipation in newborn and early childhood].

This study is based on a collection of 385 cases of constipation in newborn infants and young children, investigated clinically and by means of histological and neurohistological examination of biopsies taken from the rectal mucosa. Neurohistological techniques proved superior for the differential diagnosis and, hence, of greater value for determining further therapeutic management, both medical and surcival. Four special problems are discussed: Hirschsprung's disease in different neurohistological and clinical findings in these cases, functional ileus of the large intestine in newborn infants

Education of pediatric surgery residents over time: Examining 15 years of case logs.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Surgical indications and techniques have changed over the last 15 years. The number of Pediatric Surgery training programs has also increased. We sought to examine the effect of these changes on resident education by examining case log data. METHODS: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case logs for graduating Pediatric Surgery residents were examined from 2004 to 2018. Using the summary statistics provided, linear regression analysis was conducted on each case log code and category. RESULTS: In 2004, there were 24 Pediatric Surgery training progr

Infants of diabetic mothers are at increased risk for the oculo-auriculo-vertebral sequence: A case-based and case-control approach.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) are at increased risk for dysplastic ears and the oculoauriculo-vertebral spectrum (OAVS). STUDY DESIGN: Cases of IDM with dysplastic external ears seen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center were combined with case series in medical literature describing similar patients. Data from a large congenital birth defects registry in Spain were analyzed, and odds ratios (OR) for infants born to either a gestational or preconceptionally diabetic mother to have one of the studied malformations were calculated with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS

A Review of Mullerian Anomalies and Their Urologic Associations.

Structural anomalies of the female reproductive tract, known as Mullerian anomalies, can occur in isolation or in association with anomalies of other organ systems. Due to shared embryology, the most common association in up to 40% of patients is with renal, ureteral, and bladder anomalies. Affected girls can have a wide range of genitourinary symptoms with urologists playing an integral role in their diagnosis and treatment. To facilitate the recognition and management of these conditions, we provide a review of Mullerian anomalies including the embryology, classifications, syndromes, evaluat

Rates and burden of surgical site infections associated with pediatric colorectal surgery: insight from the National Surgery Quality Improvement Program.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the rates of surgical site infections (SSI) associated with colorectal procedures in children and the relative burden of these events within the scope of pediatric surgical practice. METHODS: The NSQIP-Pediatric Public Use File was queried for all pediatric surgery procedures captured from 50 hospitals during 2012-2013. Rates of incisional and deep organ/space SSIs (ISSI and OSI, respectively) were calculated for all procedures, and the relative burden of SSIs from the entire dataset attributable to colorectal procedures was determined.

Early reported rectal sensation predicts continence in anorectal anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Straining at stool is an automatic reflex in babies and implies the presence of rectal sensation. We hypothesised that early reported rectal sensation would predict future continence in children with anorectal anomalies. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to determine if early straining at stool was a useful predictor of future continence in infants born with high anorectal malformations. METHODS: A retrospective case note review of prospectively collected clinical information was performed with institutional review board approval. All patients with intermediate/high anor

Mutations in the human UBR1 gene and the associated phenotypic spectrum.

Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, typical facial features, dental anomalies, hypothyroidism, sensorineural hearing loss, scalp defects, urogenital and anorectal anomalies, short stature, and cognitive impairment of variable degree. This syndrome is caused by a defect of the E3 ubiquitin ligase UBR1, which is part of the proteolytic N-end rule pathway. Herein, we review previously reported (n = 29) and a total of 31 novel UBR1 mutations in relation to the associated phenotype in patients from 50 unrelated
