Parent-Reported Obesogenic Risk Behaviors and Infant Weight at Age 6 Months.

IMPORTANCE: Parents influence young children's diet, sleep, and physical activity behaviors. Pediatric primary care practitioners (PCPs) are uniquely positioned to identify obesogenic behaviors from infancy, yet few screening tools assess these behaviors in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between parent-reported obesogenic behaviors and infant weight outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study is a secondary analysis of data from the Women, Infants, and Children Enhancements to Early Healthy Lifestyles for Baby (WEE Baby) Care study. Parti

Investigating functional connectivity differences during food vs. monetary reward processing across appetitive phenotypes of major depressive disorder.

Reward processing deficits are prominent in major depressive disorder (MDD) and contribute to appetitive phenotypes: hyperphagic (HyperMDD) and hypophagic (HypoMDD). However, few studies have examined neurobiological processes underlying these phenotypes, and whether they stem from aberrant responsivity specific to food or rewards more broadly. This study probed group differences in functional connectivity during anticipation and outcome phases of food vs. monetary rewards across appetitive MDD phenotypes. 14 unmedicated HyperMDDs, 20 unmedicated HypoMDDs, and 36 healthy controls completed foo

Effects of fasting and re-feeding on the expression of CCK, PYY, hypothalamic neuropeptides, and IGF-related genes in layer and broiler chicks.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) and peptide YY (PYY) have been investigated as gut hormones that send satiation signals to the brain in mammals. There is evidence that chicken PYY mRNA expression was the highest in the pancreas compared to other tissues. We recently suggested that insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and its binding proteins (IGFBPs) may be involved in the appetite regulation system in chicks. In the present study, in order to evaluate the possible roles of CCK, PYY, and IGF-related proteins in the appetite regulation system in chicks, we analyzed changes in the mRNA levels of these genes

Fluoxetine Mimics the Anorectic Action of Estrogen and Its Regulation of Circadian Feeding in Ovariectomized Female Rats.

Our previous study demonstrated that chronic estrogen replacement in ovariectomized rats reduces food intake and augments c-Fos expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), specifically during the light phase. Here, we hypothesized that serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), which have anorectic action and play a role in regulating circadian rhythm, mediate the light phase-specific anorectic action of estrogen, and that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) mimic the hypophagic action of estrogen. Female Wistar rats were ovariectomized and treated with estradio

Psychedelics and reconsolidation of traumatic and appetitive maladaptive memories: focus on cannabinoids and ketamine.

RATIONALE: Clinical data with 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients recently stimulated interest on the potential therapeutic use of psychedelics in disorders characterized by maladaptive memories, including substance use disorders (SUD). The rationale for the use of MDMA in PTSD and SUD is being extended to a broader beneficial "psychedelic effect," which is supporting further clinical investigations, in spite of the lack of mechanistic hypothesis. Considering that the retrieval of emotional memories reactivates specific brain mechanisms vu

[Glucose homeostasis and gut-brain connection].

Since the XIX(th) century, the brain has been known for its role in regulating food intake (via the control of hunger sensation) and glucose homeostasis. Further interest has come from the discovery of gut hormones, which established a clear link between the gut and the brain in regulating glucose and energy homeostasis. The brain has two particular structures, the hypothalamus and the brainstem, which are sensitive to information coming either from peripheral organs or from the gut (via circulating hormones or nutrients) about the nutritional status of the organism. However, the efforts for a

Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity in brain and behavioral analysis in adult rats after chronic administration of fenproporex.

Fenproporex is an amphetamine-based anorectic and it is rapidly converted in vivo into amphetamine. It elevates the levels of extracellular dopamine in the brain. Acetylcholinesterase is a regulatory enzyme which is involved in cholinergic synapses and may indirectly modulate the release of dopamine. Thus, we investigated whether the effects of chronic administration of fenproporex in adult rats alters acquisition and retention of avoidance memory and acetylcholinesterase activity. Adult male Wistar rats received repeated (14 days) intraperitoneal injection of vehicle or fenproporex (6.25, 12.

Prospective longitudinal study of signs and symptoms associated with primary tooth eruption.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between primary tooth eruption and the manifestation of signs and symptoms of teething in infants. METHODS: An 8-month, longitudinal study was conducted with 47 noninstitutionalized infants (ie, receiving care at home) between 5 and 15 months of age in the city of Diamantina, Brazil. The nonrandomized convenience sample was based on the registry of infants in this age range provided by the Diamantina Secretary of Health. Eligible participants were infants with up to 7 erupted incisors and no history of chronic disease or disorders that could cause an incre

The use of sibutramine in the management of obesity and related disorders: an update.

AIMS: To review the major trials that evaluated the efficacy and safety of the use of sibutramine for weight loss and the impact of this agent on obesity-related disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS: The most important articles on sibutramine up to January 2009 were located by a PubMed and Medline search. Sibutramine reduces food intake and body weight more than placebo and has positive effects on the lipid profile (mainly triglycerides and high density lipoprotein cholesterol), glycemic control and inflammatory markers in studies for up to one year. Preliminary studies showed that sibutramine may

Mapping the apetitive and aversive systems with emotional pictures using a block-design fMRI procedure.

Negative emotional pictures from the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS) have been successful in mapping brain areas related to the aversive system. However, the capacity of positive emotional pictures to study the brain areas related to the appetitive system (i.e., nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex) is less established. In this study, we used a block fMRI design to investigate this issue, including emotional pictures as background while participants performed a vowel-consonant discrimination task. Importantly, participants were heterosexual males and all positive pictures were r

Endogenous cannabinoids in the brain and peripheral tissues: regulation of their levels and control of food intake.

Endocannabinoids were first defined in 1995 as 'endogenous substances capable of binding to and functionally activating the cannabinoid receptors'. To date, two well-established endocannabinoids, N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), as well as a few other putative ligands, all derived from long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been identified in animal tissues. The biosynthetic and metabolic pathways for anandamide and 2-AG have been elucidated, and most of the enzymes therein involved have been cloned. We now know that CB1 receptors, and endocannab

FAS inhibitor cerulenin reduces food intake and melanocortin receptor gene expression without modulating the other (an)orexigenic neuropeptides in chickens.

Cerulenin, a natural fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitor, and its synthetic analog C75 are hypothesized to alter the metabolism of neurons in the hypothalamus that regulate ingestive behavior to cause a profound decrease of food intake and an increase in metabolic rate, leading to body weight loss. The bulk of data exclusively originates from mammals (rodents); however, such effects are currently lacking in nonmammalian species. We have, therefore, addressed this issue in broiler chickens because this species is selected for high growth rate and high food intake and is prone to obesity. First,

Managing overweight in older children and adolescents.

Because overweight and obesity are chronic health conditions, long-term management is necessary, with particular attention to comorbidities. Lifestyle modification including changes in diet and activity can be accomplished in the primary care setting. Many overweight and obese children and adolescents can achieve weight loss of 0.5 kg per week even over long periods. For some severely obese children, pharmacotherapy or surgery may be necessary.

Clinical pharmacotherapy for obesity: current drugs and those in advanced development.

The current obesity pandemic imposes a major global disease burden. Levels of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers will continue to rise unless an effective approach to treat obesity is found. Sustained weight loss of between 5-10% in the obese, by various means, confers marked health benefits. The currently available pharmacotherapies, orlistat and sibutramine, can induce weight loss of between 5-10% over 2 years or more. In trials, orlistat and sibutramine induced weight loss tends to be only between 2-4 kg greater than that produced by p

Dopaminergic and serotoninergic anorectics differentially antagonize insulin- and 2-DG-induced hyperphagia.

The efficacy of anorectic drugs has been studied in rats made hyperphagic by injection of insulin or of 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG). It was found that anorectics that act through a serotoninergic mechanism, i.e., d- and d-l-fenfluramine, p-chloroamphetamine, quipazine and fluoxetine antagonize both insulin- and 2-DG-induced overeating, while anorectics acting through the dopaminergic system, i.e., d-amphetamine, diethylpropion, lisuride, bromocriptine and mazindol, antagonize the hyperphagia induced by 2-DG but not that induced by insulin. Neither serotoninergic nor dopaminergic anorectics modifi

Comparison of the psychosocial effects of epilepsy and narcolepsy/cataplexy: a controlled study.

A questionnaire survey compared the psychosocial effects of epilepsy in 60 patients without major organic pathology (selected cases with temporal lobe epilepsy or primary generalized epilepsy) with those of matched (duration of illness, sex) patients with narcolepsy/cataplexy and with those of age- and sex-matched controls. Comparing epileptic patients with controls, we confirmed the well-documented marked deleterious effects of epilepsy upon work, education, occupational and household accidents, recreation, personality, interpersonal relations, and other parameters. Comparisons of epileptic a
