Modeling of time-dependent force response of fingertip to dynamic loading.

An extended exposure to repeated loading on fingertip has been associated to many vascular, sensorineural, and musculoskeletal disorders in the fingers, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, hand-arm vibration syndrome, and flexor tenosynovitis. A better understanding of the pathomechanics of these sensorineural and vascular diseases in fingers requires a formulation of a biomechanical model of the fingertips and analyses to predict the mechanical responses of the soft tissues to dynamic loading. In the present study, a model based on finite element techniques has been developed to simulate the mech

Papanicolaou staining of exfoliated vaginal epithelial cells facilitates the prediction of ovulation in the giant panda.

The giant panda is seasonally monoestrus, experiencing a single estrous with spontaneous ovulation in the spring. Therefore, accurate monitoring of the estrous cycle to pinpoint the time of ovulation is critical for the success of timed mating or artificial insemination. Analysis of exfoliated vaginal epithelial cells is a simple technique that rapidly yields information about the estrous status of a panda. Vaginal swabs were obtained during five estrous cycles of two nulliparous females. Cells were stained with the trichrome Papanicolaou and classified as basophils, intermediates or superfici

Effects of protein kinase inhibitor, HA1077, on intraocular pressure and outflow facility in rabbit eyes.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the roles of protein kinase in regulating the intraocular pressure (IOP) and outflow facility in rabbit eyes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A protein kinase inhibitor, 1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)-homopiperazine (HA1077), was used. The IOP and the outflow facility were measured before and after topical, intracameral, or intravitreal administration of HA1077 in rabbits. Western blot analysis was performed to detect the 20-kd light chain of myosin in human trabecular meshwork (TM) cells and bovine ciliary muscle (CM) tissues. The cell morphologic condition and distribution of act

Electropalatographic and cephalometric assessment of myofunctional therapy in open-bite subjects.

Myofunctional therapy (MFT) is often prescribed to correct tongue-thrust swallowing, with the expectation that anterior open bite (AOB) will reduce spontaneously if a more posterior tongue posture is learned. However, MFT has not been subjected to systematic evaluation. Electropalatography (EPG), which is used in speech pathology to measure dynamic tongue function for diagnostic, therapeutic and research purposes, is a suitable technique for the evaluation of MFT. This prospective clinical study assessed the effect of tongue re-education therapy on tongue function and dento-facial form in AOB

Intracerebral Whipple's disease diagnosed by stereotactic biopsy: a case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: This case demonstrates the rare occurrence of intracerebral Whipple's disease in a patient lacking classic systemic manifestations of the disease. Because of the nonspecific presentation and the typically deep-seated location of cerebral lesions in these patients, definitive diagnosis is frequently problematic. We present the first reported use of stereotaxy-guided brain biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of isolated intracranial Whipple's disease. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient was a 36-year-old man who presented with a 4-month history of progressive lethargy, hype

Differential alterations in basal and D-amphetamine-induced behavioural pattern following 6-OHDA or ibotenic acid lesions into the dorsal striatum.

It is well known that the corpus striatum is related to the sterotyped activation induced by several psychostimulants. In this study we analyzed the effects of 6-OHDA, in comparison with those of ibotenic acid lesions, into the dorsal striatum, on the behavioural pattern induced by saline or D-amphetamine treatment. A computerized technique for recording the animal motor activity was developed in order to define in a detailed way the behavioural profile in lesioned and sham-operated rats induced by the saline or D-amphetamine treatment. A 6-OHDA lesion into the dorsal striatum modified the bas

Determinants of reluctance to perform CPR among residents and applicants: the impact of experience on helping behavior.

BACKGROUND: Though mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (MMR) is widely endorsed as a useful lifesaving technique, studies have shown that health care professionals are reluctant to perform it. To characterize the circumstances which facilitate this reluctance among physicians, we have surveyed current and future residency trainees regarding attitudes toward providing ventilation by this method to strangers experiencing arrest in the community. METHODS: A total of 280 categorical emergency medicine (EM) and internal medicine (IM) house officers and respective program applicants at a 655 bed Brooklyn,

Contribution of tubuloglomerular feedback to renal arteriolar angiotensin II responsiveness.

The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that a component of the afferent arteriolar vasoconstrictor response to angiotensin II (Ang II) requires an intact tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF) mechanism. Enalaprilat-treated male Sprague-Dawley rats served as tissue donors for study of renal microvascular function using the in vitro blood-perfused juxtamedullary nephron technique. Arteriolar lumen diameter responses to exogenous Ang II were determined before and after TGF blockade (papillectomy or 50 microM furosemide). Before TGF blockage, 10 nM Ang II significantly reduced diame

Reproduction in free-ranging Propithecus verreauxi: estrus and the relationship between multiple partner matings and fertilization.

Female sifaka mate selectively with one or more resident and/or non-resident males during the breeding season. Various adaptive explanations have been advanced to explain why female primates mate with multiple males including that 1) females seek to confuse paternity and thereby forestall male infanticide and/or ensure male infant care or 2) females seek to ensure fertilization. Assessing the power of fertilization insurance to explain mating patterns in females requires information on the temporal relationship between mating and ovarian hormones. The hormonal correlates of reproduction and ma

Immunocytochemical localization of serotonin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone in the brain and pituitary gland of the Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus.

The distribution of serotonin-immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone-immunoreactive (GnRH-ir) elements in the brain and pituitary gland of the Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) was studied using immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence techniques. 5-HT- and GnRH-ir perikarya were observed in the ventrolateral region of the olfactory bulbs and in the preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area bordering the third ventricle as well as in regions distal to the ependyma of the third ventricle. The immunoreactive elements of the two systems appear to overlap in these regions. C

Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to beta-lactam antibiotics.

Since the discovery of carbenicillin in 1970, several groups of beta-lactam agents with remarkable activity against P. aeruginosa are actually available among penicillins such as ticarcillin, azlocillin, piperacillin, apalcillin and among cephalosporins: cefoperazone, cefsulodin as well as new structures including monobactams (aztreonam) and carbapenems with imipenem. An attempt to establish hierarchy in terms of weight for weight activity, particularly against susceptible isolates is made. The most active antimicrobial agents are: imipenem, apalcillin, ceftazidime, cefsulodin, piperacillin an

Clinical application of the P3 component of event-related potentials. II. Dementia, depression and schizophrenia.

Patients with dementia, schizophrenia and depression were tested with analogous auditory and visual event-related potential (ERP) paradigms designed to elicit a large P3. The patient groups were compared to age normative predictions derived from a large control sample for a number of ERP and behavioral variables. The results were similar for the auditory and visual paradigms. P3 latency was prolonged two or more S.D.s beyond that predicted by age for less than one-half of the demented patients. This latency prolongation was significant for the group as a whole but would result in too many fals

Towards OPtimal TIming and Method for promoting sUstained adherence to lifestyle and body weight recommendations in postMenopausal breast cancer survivors (the OPTIMUM-study): protocol for a longitudinal mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of postmenopausal breast cancer (PMBC) survivors do not adhere to lifestyle recommendations and have excess body weight. In this group, this is associated with poorer health-related quality of life and an increased risk of type II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, second primary cancers, cancer recurrences, and mortality. Gaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and body composition is therefore important. It is unknown when and how sustained adherence to these recommendations can be promoted optimally in PMBC survivors. Therefore, the OPTIMUM study aims to

Investigation by fluorescence spectroscopy, resonance rayleigh scattering and zeta potential approaches of the separate and simultaneous binding effect of Paclitaxel and estradiol with human serum albumin.

Separate and simultaneous binding effects of paclitaxel (a drug with anti-tumor activity) and estradiol (used for treating multiple maladies) with human serum albumin (HSA) were investigated by fluorescence quenching, UV absorption, circular dichroism, zeta potential and molecular dynamic techniques. An extensive fluorescence quenching was observed during the reaction of drugs and HSA and was rationalized in terms of a static quenching mechanism. The molecular distances between the donor (HSA) and acceptors (paclitaxel or estradiol) in binary and ternary systems were estimated according to För

Therapeutic Writing in a Group Setting for Girls with ADHD: A Case Series on Self-Perception, Self-Esteem, and Socio-Emotional Functioning.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently associated with emotional dysregulation, socio-emotional difficulties, and low self-esteem. Narrative-based approaches, including therapeutic writing, may support identity development and promote adaptive self-representations. However, there is limited evidence regarding structured, group-based therapeutic writing interventions for this population, particularly for female subjects. This case series provides preliminary and exploratory evidence regarding the feasibility of and potential changes associated with this approa

Visualizing Size-Dependent Dynamics of CeO2-δ{100}-Supported CoOx Nanoparticles Under CO2 Hydrogenation Conditions.

Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas. In order to optimize processes focused on its chemical valorization, one needs detailed information about the effects of CO2 and/or CO2/H2 mixtures on the structure and morphology of metal/oxide catalysts. In this study, the evolution of a catalyst with cobalt supported on CeO2-cube nanostructures under CO2 hydrogenation conditions was investigated by using a set of in situ characterization techniques (X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and environmental transmission electron

Chemotactic study of Escherichia coli towards alanine using a microfluidics platform.

Chemotaxis, the capacity of cells and microorganisms to detect and respond to chemical gradients, is integral to various biological processes, including biofilm formation, environmental decontamination, pathogen identification, and targeted drug delivery. This study involved the fabrication of a Y-shaped microfluidic device to examine the chemotactic migration of Escherichia coli K12 DH5α toward gradient concentrations of alanine, an amino acid that serves as a potent chemoattractant for E. coli. The microfluidic device was designed and fabricated using standard photolithography and soft litho
