A 6-year-old domestic shorthair male castrated cat was evaluated for sudden onset of vomiting and anorexia. A diagnosis of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) was made, and the cat was treated with imatinib mesylate. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a progressive and often fatal myeloproliferative disorder. The hallmark of CML is an acquired chromosomal translocation known as the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) that results in the synthesis of the BCR-ABL fusion protein, a constitutively active tyrosine kinase (TK). The introduction of imatinib, a TK inhibitor (TKI) specific for BCR-ABL, was a major breakthrough in CML therapy. Although most patients respond to first-line imatinib therapy, some experience a loss of response (resistance) or require treatment discontinuation because of toxicity (intolerance).

The management of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) during pregnancy is a matter of continued debate. We present a 21-year-old woman in whom CML was diagnosed during early pregnancy. Because the patient was asymptomatic and desired to carry the pregnancy to term while minimizing fetal exposure to medication, she was observed with no therapy for the duration of her pregnancy. The white blood cell count showed a slow downward trend throughout her pregnancy. She delivered a healthy baby and breast fed for a time before initiating therapy for CML. We report a case of a large gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), which we were able to curatively resect after treatment with a daily dosage of 400 mg imatinib for 3 months. The patient was a 46-year-old man whose chief complaint was anemia. Historical diagnosis by endoscopic biopsy was a c-kit-positive GIST of the stomach. From a CT scan, it was suspected that the tumor had directly invaded the pancreas. The tumor was 9 cm in size.
