Biofeedback and relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders: or are the machines really necessary?

The literature on the use of biofeedback and various forms of relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders was reviewed; special attention was devoted to studies in which biofeedback and some form of relaxation training were compared. Based on this review, we conclude that there is no consistent advantage for one form of treatment over the other with any psychophysiological disorder for which a comparison has been made, e.g., essential hypertension, migraine headaches, premature ventricular contractions, tension headaches, temporomandibular joint pain, asthma, primary

[Management of chronic daily headache in children and adolescents].

Chronic daily headache (CDH) affects 2 to 4% of adolescent females and 0,8 to 2% of adolescent males. CDH is diagnosed when headaches occur more than 4 hours a day, for greater than or equal to 15 headache days per month, over a period of 3 consecutive months, without an underlying pathology. It is manifested by severe intermittent headaches, that are migraine-like, as well as a chronic baseline headache. Silberstein and Lipton divided patients into four diagnostic categories: transformed migraine, chronic tension-type headache, new daily-persistent headache, and hemicrania continua. The secon

Relaxation treatment of adolescent headache sufferers: results from a school-based replication series.

BACKGROUND: In recent reviews of psychological and drug treatment, relaxation training approaches have been found to be efficacious for children and adolescents suffering from recurrent tension-type headache (TTH), while biofeedback procedures provide effective help for migraine headache sufferers, primarily treated in tertiary clinics. OBJECTIVE: In a school-based replication series, the effectiveness and efficiency of relaxation training provided within school settings were examined, in addition to the effects on various headache features and the maintenance of treatment gains at a 6 to 10-

Electromyographic biofeedback or neuromuscular electrical stimulation added to isometric quadriceps exercise does not improve pain and functional outcomes in knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial.

Quadriceps muscle weakness is a common clinical feature in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and contributes to pain, functional limitations, and reduced quality of life. While quadriceps strengthening exercises are well-established, the additional benefits of electromyographic biofeedback (EMG-BFB) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) remain inconclusive. This single-blind randomized controlled trial investigated whether EMG-BFB or NMES provides added benefits when combined with isometric quadriceps strengthening exercises in patients with mild-to-moderate KOA. Ninety-thre

Psychogenic movement disorders.

Psychogenic movement disorders (PMDs) represent a challenging dilemma for the treating neurologist. The terminology to classify this disorder is confusing and making the diagnosis is difficult. Once the diagnosis has been established, treatment options are limited, and the patient generally does not accept the diagnosis.

[Desire for early retirement and therapy of chronic back pain: relevance of social medical variables for outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment].

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the influence of patients' desire for early retirement on the success of an outpatient cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) in patients with chronic back pain. Previous studies have shown that the desire for early retirement and social compensation had a negative influence on therapy outcome, e.g. pain intensity and pain disability. This study was conducted to reassess whether these results can be replicated in an outpatient CBT setting. METHOD: Questionnaires assessing pain-related variables were issued to a total of 116 patients at the beginning, at the

Current treatment options for female urinary incontinence--a review.

Urinary incontinence is a prevalent condition that impacts many women's lives. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI), urine loss associated with exertion, typically has its onset during the reproductive years, whereas urge incontinence, urine loss associated with urgency, more frequently affects postmenopausal women. Mixed incontinence, a combination of stress and urge incontinence, affects up to 30% of incontinent women. Simple modifications such as dietary and fluid management, timed voiding, and adjustment of medications can lessen symptom severity and should be attempted prior to instituting o

Therapeutic efficacy of biofeedback pelvic floor muscle exercise in women with dysfunctional voiding.

Dysfunctional voiding (DV), a voiding dysfunction due to hyperactivity of the external urethral sphincter or pelvic floor muscles leading involuntary intermittent contractions during voiding, is not uncommon in neurologically normal women with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). We aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of biofeedback pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in female patients with DV and to identify the therapeutic efficacy. Thirty-one patients diagnosed with DV. All participates completed the 3-month biofeedback PFMT program, which was conducted by one experienced physiot

Treatment Update of Chronic Migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although chronic migraine (CM) is a common disorder that severely impacts patient functioning and quality of life, it is usually underdiagnosed, and treatment responses often remain poor even after diagnosis. In addition, effective treatment options are limited due to the rarity of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with CM. In the present review, we discuss updated pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and neurostimulation treatment options for CM. RECENT FINDINGS: Pharmacological treatments include both acute and preventive measures. While acute treatm

A pilot study of heart rate variability biofeedback therapy in the treatment of perinatal depression on a specialized perinatal psychiatry inpatient unit.

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) therapy may be useful in treating the prominent anxiety features of perinatal depression. We investigated the use of this non-pharmacologic therapy among women hospitalized with severe perinatal depression. Three questionnaires, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale, and Linear Analog Self Assessment, were administered to 15 women in a specialized inpatient perinatal psychiatry unit. Participants were also contacted by telephone after discharge to assess continued use of HRVB techniques. The use of HRVB was
