OBJECTIVE: Although the literature adequately identifies the current gender inequality that exists in academic otolaryngology and describes the barriers to advancement of women in academic medicine, there is little information regarding the daily details of how successful women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance. This study was designed to better understand how women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance while negotiating family and childrearing commitments, clinical workload, and scholarly activity, as well as to highlight coping strategies and behaviors that

Should monkeys be used in painful and often deadly infectious disease research that may save many human lives? This is the challenging question that Anne Barnhill, Steven Joffe, and Franklin G. Miller take on in their carefully argued and compelling article "The Ethics of Infection Challenges in Primates." The authors offer a nuanced and even-handed position that takes philosophical worries about nonhuman primate moral status seriously and still appreciates the very real value of such research for human welfare. Overall, they argue for an extension and revision of the recommendations regarding

Mycetoma is a tropical disease which is caused by a taxonomically diverse range of actinomycetes (actinomycetoma) and fungi (eumycetoma). The disease was only recently listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neglected tropical disease (NTD). This recognition is the direct result of a meeting held in Geneva on February 1, 2013, in which experts on the disease from around the world met to identify the key research priorities needed to combat mycetoma. The areas that need to be addressed are highlighted here. The initial priority is to establish the incidence and prevalence of the dise

The quarterly journal of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging : official publication of the Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine (AIMN) [and] the International Association of Radiopharmacology (IAR), [and] Section of the Society of...2005eng
The increasing availability of PET imaging in nuclear medicine expands the armamentarium of clinical and research tools for improving diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Nonetheless, the role of SPECT imaging remains critical to both research and clinical practice. The development of rational strategies for guiding the selection of imaging modalities flows from primarily the nature of the clinical or research question and the availability of appropriate radiopharmaceuticals. There has been extensive SPECT and PET work in Parkinson's disease (PD) which highlights the value of

In controlled proof-of-concept studies, healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) systems now routinely match or exceed specialist-level performance. Despite these impressive technical achievements, most systems remain confined to research settings, highlighting an opportunity to better prepare academic AI research for subsequent clinical translation. Successful translation requires attention to technical, regulatory, organizational, and infrastructural factors, ideally from the earliest stages of research. This Perspective focuses on trustworthiness as a key factor that academic researchers can

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brachial plexus injuries (TBPI) are life-changing and can lead to permanent changes in function and pain within the arm and hand. Historically, TBPI research has reflected the priorities of researchers and clinicians rather than those with personal experience of living with a TBPI. The James Lind Alliance (JLA), supported by the National Institute for Health Research, has developed a rigorous methodology for increasing public engagement in research by giving an equal voice to patients, carers, and healthcare providers to ensure that their concerns are represented in fut

As the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinical trial landscape continues to grow and evolve, optimization of research site efficiency is essential. Herein, we outline results from a formal discussion among multiple ALS research sites in the US to help establish and maintain efficient research site infrastructure. Ten ALS site managers collaborated over a 6-month period to develop a framework of operational strategies to support ALS clinical research sites. To address the evolving ALS research landscape, it was agreed that the traditional site operational model requires continuous evaluati
