Using the electron microscopic technique of negative staining, viruses of the herpes group were detected in leukoplakic lesions on the tongue of a bisexual, HTLV-III-/LAV-infected male. Oral "hairy" leukoplakia was diagnosed, which was the first clinical symptom of on HTLV-III/LAV infection in this patient.

Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways, is coordinated by Th2 cells in both human asthmatics and animal models of allergic asthma. It has been shown that helminth infections including Schistosoma mansoni may modulate atopic diseases including asthma. In the present study, BALB/c mice were infected with bisexual and unisexual (male) S. japonicum, respectively, prior to ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge. Compared to mice with OVA sensitization/challenge alone, S. japonicum infection led to a significant decrease of eosinophil accumulation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid

1. Mice were infected with fertile bisexual Schistosoma mansoni and compared with similar animals infected with unisexual worms or sterile bisexual worms. 2. A significant increase in splenic weight occurred in all infected animals. 3. Administration of well-tolerated doses of 6-mercaptopurine abolished the increase in relative splenic weight in animals infected with ordinary S. mansoni. 4. In splenectomized uninfected mice leucocytosis but no other haematological changes developed. 5. In splenectomized mice lower values for packed cell volume were observed 8 weeks after, but not 12 weeks afte

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity has increased in the UK, yet little is known about disparities by sexual orientation or whether food-insecure sexual minority adults face distinct barriers to food-bank access.
METHODS: We used the 2011-2025 UK Household Longitudinal Study to examine sexual orientation disparities in food insecurity, food-related financial pressure, food-bank use, and reasons for food-bank non-use. Food insecurity was measured using the eight-item Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). A high food-spending-burden measure, calibrated against FIES-defined food insecurity, was appli

INTRODUCTION: The abbreviation LGBTQIA+, short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual, unites a wide range of gender and sexual identities that are frequently marginalized in society. Compared to their peers and coworkers from heterosexual groups, they have less access to public health facilities, which causes physical, mental, social, and financial issues. Hence, the objectives of the study are to explore the concerns and evaluate the health profile and quality of life of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Maharashtra. Materials and methods: Our study employed

BACKGROUND: Nearly two thirds of adults who have experienced a substance use disorder (SUD) are in recovery. Differences in recovery from SUD remain understudied. We examined demographic characteristics related to SUD and recovery in a nationally representative sample.
METHODS: Data were from the 2021 National Survey of Drug Use and Heath (unweighted N = 44,877). Binary logistic regressions compared demographic groups' odds of past-year SUD and lifetime recovery from SUD among adults and emerging adults (ages 18-25).
RESULTS: Among all adults, 17.2% reported past-year SUD and 8.4% reported b

INTRODUCTION: Cancer risk factors are more common among sexual minority populations (e.g., lesbian, bisexual) than their heterosexual peers, yet little is known about cancer incidence across sexual orientation groups.
METHODS: The 1989-2017 data from the Nurses' Health Study II, a longitudinal cohort of female nurses across the United States, were analyzed (N = 101,543). Sexual orientation-related cancer disparities were quantified by comparing any cancer incidence among four sexual minority groups based on self-disclosure-(1) heterosexual with past same-sex attractions/partners/identity; (2)

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated increased risk of mental disorder symptoms, suicide and substance misuse in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults, compared to heterosexual adults. Our aims were to determine an estimate of the association between sexual orientation identity and poor mental health and wellbeing among adults from 12 population surveys in the UK, and to consider whether effects differed for specific subgroups of the population.
METHODS: Individual data were pooled from the British Cohort Study 2012, Health Survey for England 2011, 2012 and 2013, Scottish Health Surve

Urban young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and transgender women continue to experience high rates of new HIV infections in the USA, yet most of this population is not reached by current prevention interventions. The rate of Internet and social media use among youth is high. However, continually updated understanding of the associations between social media access and use and HIV risk behaviors is needed to reach and tailor technology-delivered interventions for those most vulnerable to HIV-racially and ethnically diverse urban YMSM and transgender persons. Thus, we conducted an in-person, v

BACKGROUND: International research assessing differences in the prevalence of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use among Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTI) and heterosexual populations shows elevated prevalence rates of substance use among LGBTI people. To date no research has been published investigating these differences at a population level among both men and women in Australia.
METHODS: The 2013 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, a multistage stratified population sample collecting data on AOD use in the Australian population over 14 years of age, was analysed for differences

This systematic review evaluates the psychometric properties of instruments used to measure minority stress in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) populations. A systematic search identified measurement instruments for dimensions of minority stress in adult LGBQ populations. The instruments were evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology. Eight out of 105 instruments qualified for appraisal. The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS) and its German adaptation, LGBIS-DE, demonstrated the strongest psycho

In angiosperms, dioecy has evolved thousands of times, and the pathways underlying the required floral changes are therefore expected to exhibit diversity as well as parallelism. Here we investigate Itoa orientalis, a dioecious Salicaceae in which immature flowers are bisexual, but the stamens or pistils then abort. This contrasts with the floral development in dioecious species of Populus and Salix, which lack any morphologically bisexual stage. A haplotype-resolved Itoa genome assembly revealed an XY system of sex determination with a sex-determining region (SDR) spanning ∼6 Mb and encompass

OBJECTIVE: To analyze sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with vulnerability to HIV according to sexual orientation.
METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study conducted using data on 3,818 people in the city of Imperatriz, Brazil, during 2015 and 2016. The survey's questionnaires addressed sociodemographic and behavioral variables. For the data analysis, association (chi-square test) and strength of association (odds ratio) were observed. A significance level of p < 0.05 and adjustment for age and gender were taken into consideration.
RESULTS: A substantial portion of the sample

This large-scale cross-sectional study compared posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence among White, Black, and Latino lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals (LGBs; n = 382) and compared them with heterosexual individuals (n = 126). Building on previous research, we relaxed the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), allowing non-Criterion A1 events such as ending a relationship, unemployment, homelessness, and separation from parents to qualify, and we assessed differences in PTSD prevalence betwee

OBJECTIVES: We used data from a nationally representative sample to examine the associations among 3 dimensions of sexual orientation (identity, attraction, and behavior), lifetime and past-year mood and anxiety disorders, and sex.
METHODS: We analyzed data from wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.
RESULTS: Mental health outcomes differed by sex, dimension of sexual orientation, and sexual minority group. Whereas a lesbian, gay, or bisexual identity was associated with higher odds of any mood or anxiety disorder for both men and women, women reportin

Increasing numbers of women are choosing to have children in the context of same-sex relationships or as "out" lesbian or bisexual individuals. This study used qualitative methods to assess perceived predisposing and protective factors for perinatal depression in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) women. Two focus groups with LGBQ women were conducted: 1) biological parents of young children and 2) nonbiological parents of young children or whose partners were currently pregnant. Three major themes emerged. Issues related to social support were primary, particularly related to disappoint

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a self-limiting viral disease of the skin and the mucous membranes. Facial and perioral MC is seen with increasing frequency in human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection, particularly in HIV infected homosexual men. The purpose of this study was to describe clinical observations of facial and perioral MC in HIV infected patients. One hundred and eighty HIV-positive individuals (160 males and 20 females) were examined over a period of five years. Fifty-eight were homosexual men and 19 were bisexual men. Fifty-one of 180 patients at the time of the first examination ha

Between September 1985 and June 1988, 6923 people (4550 men and 2373 women) were tested for HIV-1 antibodies at a sexually transmitted disease clinic, London, UK. Of the 6923 individuals tested, 558 (8%) were seropositive, of whom 523 (94%) were men and 35 (6%) women. Of the seropositives, 84% were homosexual or bisexual men, 5% were intravenous drug users, 4% were heterosexual contacts of HIV seropositives, 4% had multiple risk factors, 2% were heterosexual contacts of central African partners and 1% were heterosexuals with no other risk factors. This prevalence pattern conforms to that obser
