Gonadotropin-independent mechanisms participate in ovarian responses to realimentation in feed-restricted prepubertal gilts.

Short-term feed restriction in prepubertal gilts suppresses episodic LH secretion in the absence of changes in body weight or composition. To assess non-gonadotropin-mediated effects of realimentation at the ovarian level, 52 gilts were assigned to six treatments after 7 days (Days 1-7) of maintenance feeding (approximately 30% ad libitum). Groups R12 and R9 were maintenance-fed Days 8-12 or Days 8-9, respectively; A12 and A9 were fed to appetite Days 8-12 or Days 8-9, respectively. Groups R9P and A9P were fed as groups R9 and A9 were but received 750 IU eCG at 1500 h on Day 8. Groups R12 and

[Nutritional status evaluation in maintenance hemodialysis patients].

UNLABELLED: Protein-calorie malnutrition is a common complication and an important predictive factor for mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease on maintenance dialysis. Therefore, nutritional status needs to be regularly assessed in these patients by using several methods. If malnutrition is diagnosed, its causes should be thoroughly searched for and properly treated. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This cross-section study aimed at evaluating the nutritional status and the possible risk factors for malnutrition in 149 (82 men) hemodialysis patients by anthropometry, biochemical tests and bi

Pharmacokinetics of tranexamic acid during cardiopulmonary bypass.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid (TA) reduces blood loss and blood transfusion during heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). TA dosing has been empiric because only limited pharmacokinetic studies have been reported, and CPB effects have not been characterized. We hypothesized that many of the published TA dosing techniques would prove, with pharmacokinetic modeling and simulation, to yield unstable TA concentrations. METHODS: Thirty adult patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, or repair of atrial septal defect received after induction of anesthesia:

Giant gastric ulcer: its natural history and outcome in the H2RA era.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to study the natural history and outcome of medical treatment of giant gastric ulcer in the histamine H2-receptor antagonist era. METHODS: All patients with gastric ulcer were prospectively followed. We assessed the special features (in particular, demography and treatment outcome) in patients with giant gastric ulcer, defined as ulcers large enough to occupy at least one wall. RESULTS: Between 1976 and 1991, 537 patients with gastric ulcer were seen, of whom 129 (24%) had giant gastric ulcer. Giant gastric ulcer patients were significantly older (p < 0.05

The effects of treatment and the individual responsiveness to growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy in 665 GH-deficient adults. KIMS Study Group and the KIMS International Board.

Data from 665 adults with GH deficiency (GHD; 332 women; 169 childhood-onset GHD; mean age, 44 yr) were analyzed to determine the efficacy of and individual responsiveness to GH replacement therapy. GH replacement was started at enrolment into KIMS (Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc. International Metabolic Database). Mean maintenance doses of GH after 6 and 12 months were 0.43 and 0.53 mg/day (1.3 and 1.6 IU/day) for men and women, respectively. Serum insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) SD score increased from -2.2 and -4.2 in men and women, respectively, to 1.8 and -0.9 at 6 months and 0.8 and -0.7 a

Influence of an oregano-based essential oil on growth performance and carcass traits of beef steers.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of an oregano-based essential oil on growth performance, health outcomes, and carcass characteristics of yearling beef steers finished in an all-natural program. Single-sourced yearling steers (N = 128; initial body weight [BW] = 335 ± 7.9 kg) were allotted to 16 pens (n = 8 pens/treatment with 8 steers/pen). Steers were blocked by pen location in a randomized complete block design (n = 8 blocks total). Treatment groups consisted of (1) control group fed no oregano-based essential oil product (CON) and (2) a group fed 4 g/steer daily o

Case Report: Unilateral resistance and impact loading during knee rehabilitation after grade-2 MCL injury was associated with hip-specific aBMD accrual in an elite female road cyclist.

BACKGROUND: Low areal bone mineral density (aBMD) is prevalent in elite road cyclists due to non-weight-bearing training loads and, at times, low energy availability (EA). Real-world, site-specific skeletal responses to targeted loading during rehabilitation remain insufficiently characterized. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old WorldTour-level female road cyclist with low aBMD (Z-score ≤ -1.1) initiated a periodized resistance and impact loading program and daily vitamin D (800 IU). Three fasted-morning DXA and venous blood assessments (Oct-2024; Mar-2025; May-2025) were paired with training l

Development of a subset of ICNP Nursing Diagnoses for the promotion of self-care in people with diabetes mellitus: a multi-center observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-care is a key for people with diabetes mellitus (DM) to avoid severe complications and to maintain quality of life. Person-centered and accurate nursing care plans can help nurses to deliver effective self-care promotion interventions. Few studies focused on nursing diagnoses that are specific for diabetes self-care education, and none of them used the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP). International Catalogues of ICNP nursing diagnoses are missing in this field. AIMS: To identify the ICNP nursing diagnoses that are useful to promote self-care in peop

STRIDE: a randomized trial of a lifestyle intervention to promote weight loss among individuals taking antipsychotic medications.

BACKGROUND: Individuals diagnosed with serious mental illnesses are at increased risk of obesity- and cardiovascular-related morbidity and early mortality. Lifestyle interventions aimed at weight loss, even those adapted to suit the needs of this particular subgroup, have rarely produced clinically meaningful reductions in weight. METHODS/DESIGN: The STRIDE study is a multi-site, parallel, two-arm randomized controlled translational trial. Participants were recruited from community mental health clinics and an integrated not-for-profit health system. Participants were randomized either to usu

State-level working memory and dysregulated eating in children and adolescents: An exploratory ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Children with loss of control (LOC) eating and overweight/obesity have relative deficiencies in trait-level working memory (WM), which may limit adaptive responding to intra- and extra-personal cues related to eating. Understanding of how WM performance relates to eating behavior in real-time is currently limited. METHODS: We studied 32 youth (ages 10-17 years) with LOC eating and overweight/obesity (LOC-OW; n = 9), overweight/obesity only (OW; n = 16), and non-overweight status (NW; n = 7). Youth completed spatial and numerical WM tasks requiring varying degrees of cognitive effo

The clinical outcomes of selective and spontaneous fetal reduction of twins to a singleton pregnancy in the first trimester: a retrospective study of 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Singleton pregnancy is encouraged to reduce pregnancy complications. In addition to single embryo transfer (SET), selective and spontaneous fetal reduction (SEFR and SPFR) can also achieve singleton pregnancies. After SEFR or SPFR, an inanimate fetus remains in the uterus. It is unclear whether the inanimate fetus would adversely affect another fetus or the mother. Previous studies have focused on the differences between pre- and post-reduction. However, studies focusing on the influence of SEFR and SPFR on the remaining fetal development and maintenance of pregnancy are rare. MET

Effects of dialysate to serum sodium (Na+) alignment in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients: retrospective cohort study from a quality improvement project.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates favorable effects of dialysate (DNa+) to serum sodium concentration (SNa+) alignment, however, results from larger sample populations are needed. For this reason, we conducted a retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study from a quality improvement project to investigate the effects of alignment on population of maintenance hemodialysis patients. METHODS: At 4 participating hemodialysis (HD) clinics, patients with SNa+ lower than the standard DNa+ of 137 mEq/L who received HD with DNa+ aligned to the average of the last 4 SNa+ measurements were evaluated

Augmentation of drug reward by chronic food restriction: behavioral evidence and underlying mechanisms.

Chronic food restriction and maintenance of low body weight have long been known to increase the self-administration and motor-activating effects of abused drugs. Using a lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation (LHSS) rate-frequency method, it is shown that chronic food restriction augments the rewarding (i.e., threshold lowering) effect of diverse drugs of abuse. Further, the effect is attributed to increased sensitivity of a neural substrate, rather than a change in drug bioavailability or pharmacokinetics, because it is preserved when drugs are injected directly into the lateral cerebral vent

Early Biomarkers, Risk Factors, and Functional Indicators of Healthy Longevity and Their Relationship with Diet.

Background/Objectives: Healthy longevity depends on not only lifespan but also the maintenance of physiological, metabolic, physical, and cognitive functions throughout aging. Identifying early determinants of health is crucial for preventing age-related decline. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on how diet and specific nutrients relate to these early risk factors and indicators of healthy longevity. Methods: A review was performed to identify the links between dietary factors, energy balance, and gut microbiota composition and normal body weight; blood cholesterol, pr

Pediatric CHOP chemotherapy acutely disrupts satellite-cell dynamics and blunts muscle mass in a sex-specific manner.

Pediatric cancer survival now exceeds 85% owing, in part, to advances and the use of combination chemotherapy treatments such as CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone). Despite its efficacy, CHOP may cause off-target effects during critical pediatric development periods such as impairments of skeletal muscle. We evaluated the acute effects of a CHOP administered to C57Bl/6J mice from postnatal day 28 to 48. CHOP slowed body-weight gain and led to a smaller gastrocnemius fiber cross-sectional area by ∼25% in both sexes (n = 11 or 12 males; n = 8 or 9 females). RNA seq

Predictors of lung function in early adulthood: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lung function reaches a peak/plateau in early adulthood before declining with age. Lower early adult lung function may increase the risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in mid-late adult life. Understanding the effects of multiple childhood/adolescent exposures and their potential interactions on plateau lung function would provide insights into the natural history of COPD. METHODS: Longitudinal spirometry data from 688 participants with complete data from a population-based birth cohort (original n = 1037) were used to investigate associations betwe
