The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of the increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in the mucosa of the appendix. One hundred and four retrospective appendectomy specimens were examined to evaluate the IELs. Intraepithelial lymphocytosis was identified in 11.5% (12 cases) of the specimens. OBJECTIVE: To study the subset of maternal cells in fetal tissue in a 2nd-trimester fetus with malformations.
METHODS: By cell sorting and PCR amplification, we studied the presence of maternal CD3+ (T cells), CD19+ (B cells), CD34+ (hematopoietic progenitor cells), and CD45+ (leukocytes) in different tissues in a 2nd trimester fetus.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-10 is a pleiotropic cytokine released from various cells, including T cells. Although IL-10 is suggested to inhibit allergic responses, its role in asthma remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To examine the in vitro effects of estrogen on CD40 ligand (CD40L) expression in peripheral blood T cells isolated from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and normal controls.
METHODS: T cells from female patients with SLE and controls were cultured in serum-free medium without and with 2-fluoroestradiol. We identified 3 patients with autoimmune myelofibrosis (AM) lacking American Rheumatism Association criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although active inflammation may be deleterious and indicate immunologic activation in chronically rejected grafts, the underlying mechanism of tissue destruction has been little studied.
