The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the long-term effects (≥ 12 months) of high-fat (HF) v. low-fat (LF) diet consumption on the indicators of glycaemic control as well as cardiovascular risk factors in pre-diabetic and diabetic individuals. Literature search was carried out using the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Trial Register until November 2013. Study-specific weighted mean differences (MD) were pooled using a random-effects model of the Cochrane software package Review Manager 5.1 and Stata 12.0 was used for meta-regressions. A

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is caused by the misfolding, accumulation and aggregation of proteins into large fibrils in the extracellular compartment of the myocardium, leading to restrictive cardiomyopathy, heart failure and death. The major forms are transthyretin (ATTR) CA and light-chain (AL) CA, based on the respective precursor protein. Each of them requires early diagnosis for a timely treatment initiation that will improve patient outcomes. For this, radionuclide imaging is essentially used as single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with bone-avid radiotracers or as positron em

AIMS: In patients with ischaemic mitral regurgitation (MR), the impact of mitral valve surgery with concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on post-operative survival and left ventricular (LV) reverse remodelling remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated these outcomes following restrictive mitral annuloplasty (RMA) with and without CABG in those patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 309 patients with chronic MR and ischaemic cardiomyopathy for whom concomitant CABG was indicated (n = 225) or not indicated (n = 84) with RMA. The primary endpoint was all cause mortali

BACKGROUND: Zebrafish regenerate their hearts after injury, and defining the barriers that block this capacity in mammals may reveal targets for heart failure treatment. Elevated levels of the cardiomyocyte-specific kinase TNNI3K are associated with human cardiomyopathy, and its overexpression drives adverse remodeling in mice. Recent work has linked elevated TNNI3K to cardiomyocyte polyploidization and loss of regenerative competence, but whether this cell-cycle effect accounts for the pathology seen in patients has not been established. Because TNNI3K is restricted to cardiomyocytes, whether

AIMS: To investigate the association between benfluorex use and organic restrictive mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients admitted to hospital for diagnostic work-up of MR of unclear aetiology.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Among patients referred between 2003 and 2008 to our tertiary centre for diagnostic work-up of MR, we retrospectively identified 22 consecutive patients (65 +/- 12 years, 64% women) with restrictive organic MR of unclear aetiology. Using propensity scores, 22 out of 156 patients who underwent surgery for dystrophic MR due to flail leaflets during the same time period were matched f

Atrial fibrillation (AF) commonly coexists with obesity, diabetes, and other cardiometabolic disorders. However, how systemic metabolic stress creates an arrhythmogenic atrial substrate remains unclear. This narrative review evaluates atrial fibroblast metabolic reprogramming as a testable mechanism within multicellular atrial cardiomyopathy, not as an established causal pathway. We organize the evidence by source: human atrial fibroblasts, human atrial tissue, atrial animal models, non-atrial cardiac fibroblasts, extracardiac fibroblasts, and reduced experimental systems. Studies of non-atria

BACKGROUND: Refractory cardiac arrest remains a major challenge in children, with poor survival despite advances in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), defined as rapid deployment of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during ongoing CPR, provides circulatory and respiratory support and can serve as a bridge to definitive interventions. While increasingly reported in adults, pediatric use remains limited due to anatomical and physiological challenges, with evidence largely restricted to case reports and small series.

Cardiovascular diseases are recognized as the leading global cause of mortality and disability, where elucidating electromechanical coupling is critical for early diagnosis and treatment. However, current technologies have been limited by the lack of synchronous acquisition of cardiac electrical and mechanical signals, restricting the quantitative evaluation of severe clinical complications such as electromechanical dissociation. In this work, an electromechanical synchronized sensing probe was developed by integrating a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based pressure sensor with a microelec

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterised by apnea or hypopnea, often presents with symptoms such as gasping or snoring. However, these symptoms can be nonspecific and are frequently overlooked, particularly in pregnant women, where they are often attributed to normal physiological adaptations, leading to underdiagnosis and negative maternal and fetal outcomes. This narrative review examines the implications of OSA during pregnancy, highlighting the importance of early screening and evaluating available treatment options. We reviewed various articles on PubMed and Google Scholar about the i

BACKGROUND: Premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) are common and associated with worse outcomes in patients with heart failure. Class 1C antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs) effectively suppress PVCs, but guidelines currently restrict their use in structural heart disease.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of class 1C AADs in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).
METHODS: All patients with NICM and an ICD treated with flecainide or propafenone at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania between 2014 and

BACKGROUND: Data regarding the association between sleep apnea (SA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are still limited. We aim to investigate the association of both types of SA, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA), and nocturnal hypoxemia with AF in HCM.
METHODS: A total of 606 patients with HCM who underwent sleep evaluations were included. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between sleep disorder and AF.
RESULTS: SA was presented in 363 (59.9%) patients, of whom 337 (55.6%) had OSA and 26 (4.3%) had CSA. Patients

The Cantabrian capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus cantabricus) is one of the most severely threatened subspecies of capercaillie. Its current population range is restricted to a small area of the Cantabrian Mountains (northwestern Spain), with only around 200 individuals remaining. As part of the national strategy for the conservation of the subspecies, the Cantabrian capercaillie Captive Breeding Center of Sobrescobio opened in 2009. Here, we use the information provided by the necropsies performed in this facility on 29 individuals (11 males, 13 females and 5 undetermined; 16 chicks and 13 adult

Left ventricular vortex formation time (VFT) is a novel dimensionless index of flow propagation during left ventricular diastole, which has been demonstrated to be useful in heart failure and cardiomyopathy. In mitral stenosis (MS), flow propagation in the LV may be suboptimal. We studied VFT in varying degrees of MS. Echocardiography was performed on 20 healthy controls and 50 cases of rheumatic MS. Patients with atrial fibrillation, LV ejection fraction < 50% and other valvular heart diseases were excluded. VFT was obtained using the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D), where L is the continuous-

Sodium restriction is often recommended in heart failure (HF) to block symptomatic edema, despite limited evidence for benefit. However, a low-sodium diet (LSD) activates the classical renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which may adversely affect HF progression and mortality in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). We performed a randomized, blinded pre-clinical trial to compare the effects of a normal (human-equivalent) sodium diet and a LSD on HF progression in a normotensive model of DCM in mice that has translational relevance to human HF. The LSD reduced HF progression by

BACKGROUND: Cardiac sympathetic denervation (CSD) is an important adjunctive option for patients with refractory ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Reports of efficacy of CSD in patients with structural heart disease (SHD) and refractory VA vary widely in literature.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of arrhythmic outcomes and complications in patients with SHD who underwent CSD due to recurrent VAs.
METHODS: Electronic databases (Google Scholar and PubMed) were searched to identify reports on CSD in SHD using appropriate medical subject terms. No sample siz

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to explore the association between exercise duration versus exercise intensity and adverse outcome in patients with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (AC).
BACKGROUND: Vigorous exercise aggravates and accelerates AC, but there are no data assessing the harmful effects of exercise intensity and duration in these patients.
METHODS: Exercise habits at time of diagnosis were recorded by standardized interviews in consecutive AC patients. Exercise >6 metabolic equivalents was defined as high intensity, and exercise duration was categorized as long if above media

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation disorders (FAODs) are caused by defects in β-oxidation enzymes, including very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD), trifunctional protein (TFP), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-2 (CPT2), carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase (CACT) and others. During prolonged fasting, infection, or exercise, patients with FAODs present with hypoglycemia, rhabdomyolysis, cardiomyopathy, liver dysfunction, and occasionally sudden death. This article describes the diagnosis, newborn screening, and treatment of long-chain FAODs with a focus on VLCAD deficiency. VLCAD deficien
