Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is traditionally diagnosed by virus detection in saliva or urine. Virus culture was positive in significantly fewer urine samples collected using cotton balls in diapers (55.2%) than with samples collected by bags (93.2%) from newborns screened positive for CMV in saliva. However, polymerase chain reaction was positive in 95% of urine samples regardless of the collection method.

In premature newborn twins with respiratory disease, Trichomonas vaginalis infection was diagnosed by chance findings in respiratory samples and was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction of urine and vaginal samples from the boy and girl, respectively. Trichomonas vaginalis should be considered as a possible cause of respiratory disease in newborns and modern molecular detection techniques can help in the diagnosis.

Chlamydia psittaci is the pathogen of psittacosis and infects a wide range of birds and even humans. Human infection occurs most commonly in those with a history of contact with birds or poultry. We describe a case of psittacosis in a human immunodeficiency virus infected patient in Zhejiang Province for the first time. C. psittaci infection was confirmed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Real-Time PCR. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the sequences from the patient's samples clustered with genotype A in the same branch. Our study highlights the possibility of diagnosing psittac

Broadly HIV-1-neutralizing antibodies (BnAbs) display one or more unusual traits, including a long heavy chain complementarity-determining region 3 (HCDR3), polyreactivity, and high levels of somatic mutations. These shared characteristics suggest that BnAb development might be limited by immune tolerance controls. It has been postulated that HIV-1-infected individuals with autoimmune disease and defective immune tolerance mechanisms may produce BnAbs more readily than those without autoimmune diseases. In this study, we identified an HIV-1-infected individual with SLE who exhibited controlled

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a well-known human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1-related disease. We studied Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the tumor cells of ATLL, to investigate the etiological significance of double infection with these viruses. We used polymerase chain reaction and EBV-encoded small RNA-1 in situ hybridization to investigate the presence of EBV and immunohistochemistry to detect EBV-related oncoproteins, such as EBV-determined nuclear antigen-2 and latent membrane protein. Polymerase chain reaction performed on DNA of frozen specimens from 96 cases of ATLL reveale

Cutaneous granulomatous vasculitis manifesting as a postherpetic reaction pattern is uncommon hand has previously been reported as a delayed complication of varicella-zoster virus infection. We describe three patients who had persistent, painful, postherpetic papules in a zosteriform distribution that histologically demonstrated a small vessel granulomatous vasculitis. Herpes simplex virus DNA detected by the polymerase chain reaction technique was demonstrated in two cases.

A two-year-old, spayed female, miniature schnauzer was evaluated for respiratory distress associated with a compressive cervical mass. Generalized mycobacterial infection was diagnosed from aspirates of several enlarged lymph nodes. Tissue specimens further identified Mycobacterium avium--intracellulare using polymerase chain reaction followed by nucleic acid hybridization. Treatment with enrofloxacin, clofazamine, rifampin, and interferon did not result in long-term success.

Composite lymphomas (CLs) are defined as two unrelated lymphomas occurring at the same time within the same tissue. The incidence of these tumors is low. Of all possible combinations between lymphomas, the least frequent are the ones combining peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). We recently identified five cases of CL composed of PTCL and classical HL, mixed cellularity type. We investigated histological and clinical features of these cases. Immunostaining was performed on paraffin sections. PTCL cells were positive for CD8 and TIA-1 in four of the five cases. Hodgkin

A metabolic profiling strategy was used to investigate the metabolic responses of Syrian hamsters (SLAC) to a Schistosoma japonicum infection using high resolution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and pattern recognition. In two independent experiments, male hamsters were each infected with 100 S. japonicum cercariae. At days 34-36 post-infection, urine was obtained from hamsters housed individually in metabolism cages. At the same time, urine was collected from age- and sex-matched infection-free control hamsters. The main biochemical effects of a S. japonicum infection in the

The TaqMan-based quantitative real-time RT-PCR assay we developed uses specific probes to identify respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and to distinguish RSV subgroups A (RSV-A) and B (RSV-B). We selected conserved regions of the F gene as assay targets and designed new primers and TaqMan MGB probes to detect RSV-A and B. RSV-A and B control plasmids confirmed real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) reactivity whose efficiency was 2.5 x 10(1) to 2.5 x 10(7) copies/tube. The assay detection limit was 10 to 10(2) times higher than that of the conventional RT-PCR assay an

Pseudolymphomatous infiltrates in Borrelia infection of the skin most commonly manifest with dense B-cell infiltrates and plasma cells. Cutaneous infiltrates of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) may accumulate at sites of infection, including Borrelia infection. We report an unusual constellation in a patient with synchronously diagnosed B-CLL and Borrelia infection of skin presenting with a dense dermal T-cell-rich infiltrate masking specific leukemic infiltrates of neoplastic B cells in the context of B-CLL harboring t(14;18)(q32;q21). Specific cutaneous involvement by B-CLL was co

Melioidosis is a potentially fatal disease of both human and animals caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Disease is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. The pathogenesis of melioidosis is poorly understood. In particular, the host responses that occur following infection, and the specific host-pathogen interactions that result in the development of either acute or chronic infection are unclear. Using an established murine model, we investigated early proinflammatory cytokine responses believed to be critical in the development of

Increasing evidence indicates that chronic inflammation due to periodontal disease is associated with progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) caused by a Western diet. NAFLD has also been associated with oral infection with the etiological agent of periodontal disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis. P. gingivalis oral infection has been shown to induce cardiometabolic disease features including hepatic lipid accumulation while also leading to dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. However, the impact of P. gingivalis infection on the gut microbiota of mice with diet-induced NAFLD and the

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, can infect a wide range of host species, but limited information exists on the occurrence and implications of infection in wild species. This study describes a natural infection in a population of dorcas gazelles ( Gazella dorcas ) from a zoo. A 9-yr-old male Saharawi dorcas gazelle ( Gazella dorcas neglecta) tested positive on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and fecal polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Despite treatment with oxytetracycline, the animal did not clear the infection after 6 mo, as confirmed by a PCR test on a semen sampl

Since the Monkeypox virus outbreak erupted in May 2022, infection has been reported across all ages. Few cases exist in the medical literature about Monkeypox infection in neonates, and little is known about its clinical manifestations, disease course, or side effects of available antiviral agents in this age group. In this report, we describe the case of a 10-day-old neonate from the southern United States who presented with fevers and generalized papulopustular rash. She was treated empirically as a febrile neonate but mpox infection was suspected early because of the characteristic exanthem

OVERVIEW: Giardia is a protozoan parasite that infects the small intestine of cats and can cause diarrhoea. The biotypes that affect cats do not appear to infect humans. Infection is most common in young cats, particularly from multicat backgrounds.
DISEASE SIGNS: Infected cats that develop clinical signs show small intestinal diarrhoea and there may be associated weight loss.
DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis of infection is usually based on an in-practice ELISA for faecal antigen or zinc sulphate flotation of several pooled faecal samples. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are available but not use

This report describes an alternative technique to inoculate rabbits and to reproduce infection by Bovine herpesvirus 1 and 5. First, the nostrils are anaesthetized by aspersion with local anaesthetic. A few seconds later, and after proving the insensitivity of the zone, the rabbits are put on their back legs with their nostrils upwards and the inoculum is introduced slowly into each nostril by using disposable droppers. Clinical signs, viral isolation from nasal swabs, histological lesions found, positive polymerase chain reaction and antibodies production confirm the infection. This very simp

Patients with immunodeficiency are at an increased risk of recurrent COVID-19 infection. They may lack the natural immune response that usually confers long-lasting immunity. Here, we present our experience managing one such patient, who had a COVID-19 infection twice, 5 months apart. He had a positive SARS-CoV-2 real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and computed tomography (CT) thorax with classical findings of COVID-19 on both occasions. He had multiple negative RT-PCR tests and two CT scans without COVID-19 features between these two infections. While the antibo
