The dietary constituents that may act, in the broadest sense, as co-factors to enable bacterial enteropathogens to replicate in gastrointestinal environments are still largely unknown. Recent work has demonstrated that certain non-nutritional components of food, such as the catecholamines, can contribute to the ability of Gram-negative pathogens to replicate in iron-restrictive media that may be reflective of gastrointestinal environments. The present report examines whether other, non-catecholamine, dietary catechols, which occur widely in plant foods, can also influence enteropathogen growth

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Quality control is a critical element for Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Due to the varied chemical components, mechanisms of action, and pharmacological functions in TCM, ensuring quality is more challenging compared to chemical drugs. Then, the concept of quality markers (Q-markers) was proposed and ideal Q-markers for TCM prescriptions need to compliant with "five principles", including pharmacological effectiveness, specificity, transfer and traceability, measurability, and prescription compatibility.

Classical ecological theory predicts that herbivorous species are in competition when they share the same host plant, yet in agricultural systems certain pest insects can stably coexist on the same plant, and even perform better when they feed together than if they feed alone. As yet, the molecular mechanisms underlying such collaborative cohabitation have remained unclear. Here we unravel how two major rice pests, the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) and the rice leaf folder (RLF, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis), achieve stable cohabitation by jointly suppressing plant chemical defenses.

The global coffee industry generates over 10 million metric tons of coffee processing by-products every year (∼0.9 kg of waste, from cherry to cup, per 1 kg of coffee cherries harvested), posing a significant waste management challenge. This review presents a transdisciplinary synthesis on transferring coffee processing by-products (CPBs) from a substantial waste burden into a valuable resource across the environmental, food, and pharmaceutical sectors to promote sustainable circular economy principles. CPBs demonstrate significant potential for environmental applications in six core areas: ca

OBJECTIVES: Keratinocytes, the predominant cells in the uppermost layer of the skin, serve as theprimary protection against environmental threats. These cells exhibit activation in the presence of physical trauma, ultraviolet radiation, chemical agents, or allergenic substances. Once activated, keratinocytes release a variety of immunomodulatory soluble mediators that initiate and propagate the inflammatory response. However, dysregulation of this response and the consequent overactivation of pro-inflammatory mediators within the skin may contribute to the pathogenesis of diverse conditions, i

PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence suggests that coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Coffee contains caffeine and several other components that may modulate glucose regulation. The chlorogenic acids (CGA) in coffee have been indicated as constituents that may help to normalize the acute glucose response after a carbohydrate challenge. The aim of this study was to investigate whether two coffee beverages that differ in CGA content due to different roasting degrees will differentially affect glucose regulation.
METHODS: In a controlled crossover trial, 11 healt

A novel type of "dual-potential" electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor array was fabricated on a homemade screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) for simultaneous detection of malachite green (MG) and chloramphenicol (CAP) in one single assay. The SPCE substrate consisted of a common Ag/AgCl reference electrode, carbon counter electrode and two carbon working electrodes (WE1 and WE2). In the system, CdS quantum dots (QDs) were modified on WE1 as cathode ECL emitters and luminol-gold nanoparticles (L-Au NPs) were modified on WE2 as anode ECL emitters. Then the MG aptamer complementary strand

High-pressure carbon dioxide (HPCD) has been widely used in the extraction of high-quality bioactive compounds. The flavor profiles of cold brew coffee (CBC) prepared by HPCD, traditional cold brew (TCB), and ice drip (ID) were comprehensively evaluated by chromatographic approaches, and their variations were investigated by multivariate statistical methods. ID produced the lightest coffee color while HPCD produced the darkest. No significant difference was found in pH among the three coffee processes. The concentrations of chlorogenic acids and caffeine were the highest in ID but the lowest i

In this work, a dual recognized CRISPR/Cas12a system has been proposed, in which the activation chain is cleverly divided into two parts that can serve for precise dual target recognition, and hydrazone chemistry is introduced for the formation of a whole activation chain. It has been further explored to construct a new method for the specific and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) as one of the most common pathogens in infectious diseases. In virtue of proximity effect contributed by complementary base pairing, hydrazone chemistry accelerates the formation of the whole activati

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome that is spreading like an epidemic throughout the world without any differentiation of races and ethnic groups and has become the cause of death worldwide. It is characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood and has different types classified on the basis of varying pathophysiology. Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes is characterized by insulin insufficiency due to autoimmune dysfunction. Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes results from the combination of resistance to insulin action or/and inadequate insulin secret

Harvesting of white hop shoots might be justified if they can be shown to be beneficial to human health. The aim of the present study is to determine the effects of hop cultivars and year of production on total phenolics, antioxidant potential, microelements and pesticide residues. Biomass per plant was highly variable across the cultivars (3.1-7.1 g dry mass per plant) and depended on hop cultivar and year (2009-2011). Total phenolics as chlorogenic acid equivalents (CAE) on dry mass basis varied from 0.60 to 1.80 mg/g, and showed significant effects across hop cultivar and year. The radical
