Mercury isotope compositions in seawater and marine fish revealed the sources and processes of mercury in the food web within differing marine compartments.

Anthropogenic activities and climate change have significantly increased mercury (Hg) levels in seawater. However, the processes and sources of Hg in differing marine compartments (e.g. estuary, marine continental shelf (MCS) or pelagic area) have not been well studied, which makes it difficult to understand Hg cycling in marine ecosystems. To address this issue, the total Hg (THg) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and stable Hg isotopes were determined in seawater and fish samples collected from differing marine compartments of the South China Sea (SCS). The results showed tha

The Continuous Adaptive Challenge Played by Arboviruses: An In Silico Approach to Identify a Possible Interplay between Conserved Viral RNA Sequences and Host RNA Binding Proteins (RBPs).

Climate change and globalization have raised the risk of vector-borne disease (VBD) introduction and spread in various European nations in recent years. In Italy, viruses carried by tropical vectors have been shown to cause viral encephalitis, one of the symptoms of arboviruses, a spectrum of viral disorders spread by arthropods such as mosquitoes and ticks. Arboviruses are currently causing alarm and attention, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has released recommendations to adopt essential measures, particularly during the hot season, to restrict the spreading of the infectious agents

Terrestrial Toxicity of Synthetic Gas-to-Liquid versus Crude Oil-Derived Drilling Fluids in Soil.

Unlike most other conventional petroleum products that are derived from crude oil, gas-to-liquids (GTLs) are petroleum products that are synthesized from natural gas (methane). This process results in GTL products having no sulfur and low aromatic content, so they should have less impact on human health and the environment compared with crude oil-derived products. The GTLs have been registered for use as nonaqueous base fluids (NABFs) in drilling muds, which aid in the process of drilling wells for oil and gas extraction; it is through these uses and others that they enter terrestrial environm

Subsurface hydrological processes and groundwater residence time in a coastal alluvium aquifer: Evidence from environmental tracers (δ18O, δ2H, CFCs, 3H) combined with hydrochemistry.

As an important part of the water cycle, the hydrologic process and chemical compositions of groundwater have changed significantly due to the joint influence of climate change and human activities. Groundwater salinization becomes a serious threat to water security in coastal areas. In order to assess the relationships between surface water, groundwater and seawater in the coastal plain, we performed a synthesis study based on hydrochemical-isotopic data, hydro-dynamical records and environmental tracers. Deuterium and oxygen isotopes and water chemical indicators were used to identify pollut

Are Migratory Animals Superspreaders of Infection?

Migratory animals are simultaneously challenged by the physiological demands of long-distance movements and the need to avoid natural enemies including parasites and pathogens. The potential for animal migrations to disperse pathogens across large geographic areas has prompted a growing body of research investigating the interactions between migration and infection. However, the phenomenon of animal migration is yet to be incorporated into broader theories in disease ecology. Because migrations may expose animals to a greater number and diversity of pathogens, increase contact rates between ho

Zoonotic disease in a peripheral population: persistence and transmission of Leishmania major in a putative sink-source system in the Negev Highlands, Israel.

Populations at the edge of their geographic distributions are referred to as peripheral populations. Very little attention has been given to this topic in the context of persistence of infectious disease in natural populations. In this study, we examined this question using zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused by Leishmania major in the Negev Desert of Israel as a model system. Here, we suggest that the regional persistence of Phlebotomus papatasi populations and L. major transmission in the Sede Boqer region could be explained through processes akin to sink-source and/or mainland-isl

Photodegradation Unlocks Permafrost Carbon in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Rivers.

High-altitude rivers on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau serve as distinctive photochemical reactors, where intense solar radiation interacts with ancient carbon reservoirs to fundamentally reshape the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Based on isotopic tracers (δ2H, δ18O, δ3H, Δ14C, and δ13C) and molecular-level characterization with 7979 unique formulas identified along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, we reveal a synergistic control of sunlight and carbon source on DOM cycling. Isotopic signatures indicate considerable inputs of "old water" (i.e., glacial meltwater) and confirm permafrost-derive

Optimizing broiler transport under hot-climate conditions: interventions across pre-transport, in-transit, and post-transport stages.

Broiler transport in hot climates is associated with higher heat stress, mortality, and meat-quality defects when high temperature and humidity combine with uneven ventilation to create hot, humid thermal core zones during prolonged feed and water deprivation. This review synthesizes mitigation options across pre-transport preparation, in-transit management, and post-transport recovery, focusing on practices feasible on farms and in processing plants and using a decision-relevant framing that prioritizes controlling total deprivation time, limiting within-load heat and humidity accumulation, a

Microbiome Continuum: Connecting Environmental, Host-Associated and Engineered Microbiomes Through One Health and Artificial Intelligence.

Microbiomes are increasingly understood as interconnected ecological systems spanning soil, water, plants, animals, humans and engineered environments rather than as isolated host-associated communities. This microbiome continuum provides a mechanistic perspective for One Health by linking microbial cells with the movement of metabolites, genes, signalling molecules and ecological functions across environmental boundaries. Here, we critically examined the biological processes that maintain this continuity, including dispersal, horizontal gene transfer (HGT), metabolic exchange, environmental e

Ambient climate and experimental drought strongly shape the richness and abundance of soil microbial communities in a tropical montane cloud forest.

Tropical montane forests are undergoing rapid climate change, with declining cloudiness and warming in higher elevations. While impacts on vegetation are increasingly documented, effects on belowground microbial communities and ecosystem processes remain poorly studied. We investigated how experimental drought and warming influence soil microbial communities and decomposition across a 900-m elevation gradient in the tropical montane forests of the Dominican Republic. Precipitation exclusion shelters simulated drought at high (2250 m a.s.l.) and low elevation (1350 m a.s.l.) and high elevation

Why don't all birds lay early? Causes and consequences of breeding timing for a long-lived migratory seabird.

The relationship between earlier laying and higher breeding success is well-established in avian species. However, a wide distribution of breeding timings is often maintained within a population, and the causes and consequences of this variation require further exploration, particularly as many avian species advance breeding phenology in response to climate change. Using a 16-year dataset combining colony observations and biologging of Manx shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus), we show that earlier laying does not always result in higher breeding success, with later laying becoming less costly in r

Multi-omics reveals responses to thermal acclimation in the narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus).

The narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus) is a cold-water species with considerable aquaculture potential under climate-warming scenarios; however, its physiological response patterns during acclimation to progressively higher temperatures remain unclear. This study evaluated growth and survival during a 25-day thermal acclimation experiment with five final treatment temperatures (22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C), together with endpoint hepatopancreatic biochemical measurements and a transcriptomic and metabolomic comparison of the 22 and 31 °C treatments. Nanoengineered catalysts for sustainable pollutant removal from industrial effluents.

Our ecological balance is being disrupted by the growing population and industrial waste, which causes pollution and climate change. Our health is at risk from these toxins, which can lead to illnesses. These contaminants must degrade, but some are difficult to break down and take longer to remediate. To solve the urgent problem of environmental pollution, nanotechnology can assist in converting harmful toxins into innocuous ones or appropriately remediating them. This draws attention to the drawbacks of traditional wastewater treatment methods and the need for new technologies. Nano-engineere

The high-resolution evaluation water footprint and virtual water trade of cotton in Türkiye.

The virtual water (VW), which defines the water embedded in the commodities in the water flow throughout the entire process, and the expanded water footprint (WF) that includes it, has come to the forefront by defining the type-place-time-volume of water. This study analysed the WF with water types and VW trade of cotton with high water requirements, which has a continuity in the export-import cycle, for Türkiye, a leading cotton producer, by using high-resolution, long-time-segmented data input and taking into account the remaining winter precipitation in the country and provinces. The WF of

Dark Side of Performance-Oriented Competition: Dual Strain Pathways to Affective Organizational Commitment Among Female Managerial Employees.

Competition is widely promoted as a mechanism for enhancing employee motivation and organizational performance. However, its unintended costs for female managers remain underexplored. This study examines how performance-oriented competition (POC) affects affective organizational commitment (AOC) through workplace interpersonal strain (WIS) and work overload strain (WOS), and whether job autonomy moderates these relationships among female managerial employees. Data were drawn from the seventh wave of the Korean Women Manager Panel, a large-scale national survey in South Korea. The final sample

Spatial correlation network characteristics and influencing factors of urban ecological vulnerability in the Yellow River Basin, China.

Against the backdrop of arid and semi-arid climates, plantation degradation in the Three-North region of China has emerged as a critical constraint on regional ecosystem stability and the sustained provision of ecosystem services. We synthesized the major manifestations and plantation degradation in the Three-North region. Plantation degradation is commonly characterized by tree physiological dysfunction, accompanied by growth decline at indivi-dual and stand scales, stand structural instability, and a decline in ecosystem functions. From an integrated ecological and tree physiological perspec

Stomatal and leaf hydraulic conductivity responses to changing light and CO2 conditions in Phaseolus vulgaris.

Extreme conditions brought up by climate change have a negative impact on plant photosynthesis. However, characterizing and exploiting extant genetic variation in plants for structure and function could lead to the assembly of genotypes adapted to extreme environments. This could be accomplished by combining suitable structures and adaptive mechanisms. We selected two common bean genotypes from the Andean (Calima) and the Mesoamerican (Jamapa) gene pools and analyzed their leaf structural characteristics, leaf hydraulics, and stomatal responses to transient light and CO2. We used the patterns

Adaptive variation in avian eggshell gas conductance and structure across elevational gradients?

Many tropical bird species have restricted elevational distributions, potentially limited by how environmental conditions affect physiological processes. While some studies have examined adult physiology across elevations, relatively little attention has been given to the structure and function of eggshells despite their critical role in regulating gas exchange during the vulnerable embryonic stage. At high elevations, dry air is expected to increase water loss from the egg, and natural selection may favor lower gas conductance to reduce desiccation risk. Structural variation in eggshells, suc
