An open label investigation of the feasibility and effectiveness of Memory Boost: A novel brief group cognitive remediation intervention for adults with mixed mood and anxiety disorders.

To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel group cognitive remediation (Memory Boost) designed to improve memory in an adult mixed mood and anxiety disorder population. A secondary aim was to explore the relationship between mood symptoms and performance on subjective and objective memory measures. Participants were adults (n = 99) being treated for a primary diagnosis of a mood disorder in an ambulatory mental health and addictions program who completed Memory Boost between 2014 and 2020. Assessments were completed pre- and post-intervention using self-report measures of mood, a

Feasibility of the evidence-based cognitive telerehabilitation program Remind for patients with primary brain tumors.

Many patients with primary brain tumors experience cognitive deficits. Cognitive rehabilitation programs focus on alleviating these deficits, but availability of such programs is limited. Our large randomized controlled trial (RCT) demonstrated positive effects of the cognitive rehabilitation program developed by our group. We converted the program into the iPad-based cognitive rehabilitation program ReMind, to increase its accessibility. The app incorporates psychoeducation, strategy training and retraining. This pilot study in patients with primary brain tumors evaluates the feasibility of t

Does executive function capacity moderate the outcome of executive function training in children with ADHD?

Executive functioning (EF) training interventions aimed at ADHD-symptom reduction have limited results. However, EF training might only be effective for children with relatively poor EF capacity. This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study examined whether pre-training EF capacity moderates the outcome of an EF-training intervention on measures of near transfer (EF performance) and far transfer (ADHD symptoms and parent-rated EF behavior) immediately after treatment and at 3-month follow-up. Sixty-one children with ADHD (aged 8-12) were randomized either to an EF-training condition w

Verifying and refining early statuses in Alzheimer's disease progression: a possibility from deep feature comparison.

Defining the early status of Alzheimer's disease is challenging. Theoretically, the statuses in the Alzheimer's disease continuum are expected to share common features. Here, we explore to verify and refine candidature early statuses of Alzheimer's disease with features learned from deep learning. We train models on brain functional networks to accurately classify between amnestic and non-amnestic mild cognitive impairments and between healthy controls and mild cognitive impairments. The trained models are applied to Alzheimer's disease and subjective cognitive decline groups to suggest featur

Leveraging human pose estimation for diagnostic feedback: Action research on instructional mediation and sustainable learning in coach education.

This study investigates the pedagogical integration of Human Pose Estimation (HPE) tools in a university-level physical fitness practicum with 31 undergraduate students, aiming to enhance students' diagnostic reasoning, reflective engagement, and instructional interaction. Grounded in a three-week action research design, the study triangulates data from HPE diagnostic reports, student reflections, and instructor journals. Results reveal that AI-assisted visual feedback, when scaffolded by deliberate instructional strategies, supported a developmental shift from surface-level tool use to concep

Working memory training in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities, the role of coaching: A double-blind randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Working memory training (WMT) can offer therapeutic benefits to patients with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) and mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID). However, consistent evidence for treatment benefits of WMT over placebo training is missing. So far, participants in double-blind research designs did receive non-specific coaching, whereas active coaching based on individual training results might increase the efficacy of WMT. Furthermore, the intensity and duration of WMT is often too stressful for these children. This study therefore investigated whether a less in

The benefits of simultaneous tDCS and working memory training on transfer outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown potential as an effective aid to facilitate learning. A popular application of this technology has been in combination with working memory training (WMT) in order to enhance transfer effects to other cognitive measures after training. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analytic review aims to synthesize the existing literature on tDCS-enhanced WMT to quantify the extent to which tDCS can improve performance on transfer tasks after training. Furthermore, we were interested to evaluate the moderating effects of assessment time point (immedi

Mental and physical training with meditation and aerobic exercise improved mental health and well-being in teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teachers face significant stressors in relation to their work, placing them at increased risk for burnout and attrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about additional challenges, resulting in an even greater burden. Thus, strategies for reducing stress that can be delivered virtually are likely to benefit this population. Mental and Physical (MAP) Training combines meditation with aerobic exercise and has resulted in positive mental and physical health outcomes in both clinical and subclinical populations. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and potential effective

Enhancing Working Memory Based on Mismatch Negativity Neurofeedback in Subjective Cognitive Decline Patients: A Preliminary Study.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is suitable for studies of preattentive auditory discriminability and the auditory memory trace. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is an ideal target for early therapeutic intervention because SCD occurs at preclinical stages many years before the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). According to a novel lifespan-based model of dementia risk, hearing loss is considered the greatest potentially modifiable risk factor of dementia among nine health and lifestyle factors, and hearing impairment is associated with cognitive decline. Therefore, we propose a neurofeedback tra

Improving auditory alarm sensitivity during simulated aeronautical decision-making: the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with computerized working memory training.

Auditory alarm deafness is a failure to notice a salient auditory signal in a high-load context, which is one of the major causes of flight accidents. Therefore, it is of great practical significance for aviation safety to explore ways to avoid auditory alarm deafness under a high-load scenario. One potential reason for its occurrence could be the fact that cognitive resources are limited. Working memory (WM) capacity is important for the availability of cognitive resources. The present study investigated the effects of different types of WM ability and transcranial direct current stimulation

Utilizing Mobile Robotics for Pelvic Perturbations to Improve Balance and Cognitive Performance in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Late-life balance disorders remain a severe problem with fatal consequences. Perturbation-based balance training (PBT), a form of rehabilitation that intentionally introduces small, unpredictable disruptions to an individual's gait cycle, can improve balance. The Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (TPAD) is a cable-driven robotic trainer that applies perturbations to the user's pelvis during treadmill walking. Earlier work showcased improved gait stability and the first evidence of increased cognition acutely. The mobile Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (mTPAD), a portable version of the TPAD, applies

Guiding research and practice: a conceptual model for aerobic exercise training in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a global, epidemic problem affecting mainly older adults with tremendous social and financial burdens. Older adults with Alzheimer's disease showed reduced physical activity and cognitive changes that are probably amenable to aerobic exercise training. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model to guide future aerobic exercise research and practice by synthesizing the current state of the science on aerobic exercise training in older adults with AD. The literature review found 12 qualified studies that met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in this re

Hypoxia and Cognitive Functions in Patients Suffering from Cardiac Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are major contributors to global morbidity and mortality, and their association with cognitive impairment has gained increasing attention. Recent studies indicate that the prevalence of post-myocardial infarction (MI) cognitive impairment ranges from 22% to 37%, with attention being one of the most frequently affected domains. Moreover, novel approaches, such as normobaric hypoxic training in cardiac rehabilitation, show potential in improving both cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes. Aim: This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on
