Arachnoid cysts are a rare central nervous system malformation, representing only 1% of all intracranial masses in newborns. Primary (congenital) arachnoid cysts are benign accumulation of clear fluid between the dura and the brain substance throughout the cerebrospinal axis in relation to the arachnoid membrane and do not communicate with the subarachnoid space. Secondary (acquired) arachnoid cysts result from hemorrhage, trauma, and infection and usually communicate with the subarachnoid space. The common locations of arachnoid cysts are the surface of the brain at the level of main brain fi

Adventitial cystic disease is a rare condition involving mucinous cysts within the adventitial layer of arteries or veins. We report two distinct cases: one in the popliteal artery presenting with intermittent claudication and another in the femoral vein presenting with limb swelling and pain. The diagnosis was established based on characteristic imaging findings, and both lesions were completely excised without recurrence. The arterial cyst contained clear gelatinous fluid, and the venous cyst contained hemorrhagic material, possibly related to anticoagulant use. Adventitial cystic disease sh

Chylous jejunal cysts are extremely rare entities and if not diagnosed promptly may lead to severe complications like bowel obstruction, loss of small bowel and even death. We present the case of a 4 year-old-male referred to our institution with severe abdominal pain, constipation, abdominal distention and radiological findings of large amount of fluid in the lower abdomen with associated bowel obstruction. Operative findings were that of large chylous jejunal cyst causing segmental volvulus. Resection of the involved jejunal segment and cyst along with bowel detorsion was undertaken. Literat

We report the case of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the left orbital roof in a 12-year-old boy who presented proptosis of the left eye and painless swelling of the left orbital rim. A 3-cm-large tumor developed in less than 3 months, with first visible signs about 2 months after a minor head injury. Radiologically, the lesion was osteolytic and multicystic. The cyst, filled with hematic fluid, was surgically removed via left frontal craniotomy and a simple curettage with high-speed bur. The patient recovered well and has been in good health throughout 14 months of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks from the fallopian canal are exceedingly rare, with only 6 reports appearing in the world literature. We report a seventh case that is unique in that it involves an arachnoid cyst of the fallopian canal and an associated facial nerve palsy.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: International tertiary care referral center.
CONCLUSION: CSF otorhinorrhea associated with a facial nerve palsy may be indicative of an arachnoid cyst of the fallopian canal. These fistula are extremely rare. Surgical management involves sealing the fistula while p

Hepatobiliary cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma are rare tumors of the liver. The differential diagnosis of cystadenoma includes other cystic neoplasms, nonneoplastic cysts, and even on some occasions parasitic liver involvement. It has been suggested that elevated serum level of the tumor marker CA 19-9 may be of value in distinguishing between cystadenoma with ovarian stroma and hydatid disease. We report the unique case of a male patient with a hepatobiliary cystadenocarcinoma without ovarian stroma of prolonged evolution characterized by a normal CA 19-9 serum level, low cyst fluid CA 19-…

A patient is reported who has multiple osseomeningeal defects and bilateral frontobasal encephaloceles in the context of a neurofibromatosis. After frontobasal revision with plastic closure of a cerebrospinal fluid fistula, the rhinoliquorrhea cleared, but there was an aggravation of a preexisting internal hydrocephalus with signs of raised intracranial pressure. The conditions were stabilized after various shunt operations. Additional diagnoses included a cyst (possibly a colloid cyst) in the anterior third ventricle and partial aplasia of the anterior trabecula. The particular problems in th

BACKGROUND A cyst within the canal of Nuck is an uncommon groin mass found in female patients. Embryologically, this is equivalent to a patent processus vaginalis in males. This cyst presents as a nonspecific bulge and is often mistaken for or presents concurrently with an inguinal hernia. Preoperative imaging assists in delineating anatomy and ruling out other differential diagnoses. Surgical management involves excision with inguinal hernia repair and has varied from open techniques to laparoscopic techniques. In this case, we describe a robot-assisted approach to cyst excision with concurre

Bronchogenic cyst is a rare clinical; entity that occurs due to an anomalous development of the ventral foregut; they are usually single but may be multiple and can be filled with fluid or mucus. They have been found all along the transoesophageal course, in perihilar or intraparenchymal sites, with predilection for the area around the carina. The location of the cyst depends on the embryonic stage of development at which the anomaly occurs. When the abnormal budding occurs during the early development, the cyst tends to be located along the tracheobronchial tree. The cysts that develop later

P2Y receptors couple to G proteins and either mobilize intracellular Ca(2+) or alter cAMP levels to modulate the activity of Ca(2+)- and cAMP-sensitive ion channels. We hypothesize that increased ion transport into the lumen of MDCK cysts can osmotically drive fluid movement and increase cyst size. Furthermore, activation of the adenylate cyclase/cAMP pathway may trigger cell proliferation via an extracellular signal-related kinase cascade. To test this hypothesis, several P2Y receptor inhibitors were used on the MDCK in vitro model of renal cyst formation. The nonspecific P2 receptor inhibito

Jaw cysts represent a great matter of interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Jaw cyst surgery is a common intervention in oral surgery but, in the case of a multidisciplinary patient, the oral surgeon needs to meet with other specialists. A cyst is an epithelium-lined sac containing fluid and/or semisolid material due to epithelial cell proliferation, degeneration, and liquefaction; the hypertonic solution withdraws liquids from the surrounding tissues, while internal pressure exerts an equal strength on the cyst walls. Dentigerous cysts are the second most common odontogenic cysts after

A case of quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst associated with hydrocephalus is reported. A 1-year-old girl was admitted to our service on July 31, 1984, because of mental retardation and an enlarged head. She was born of a full-term pregnancy and normal vaginal delivery without prenatal complications. Progressive increase in her head circumference was noticed at the age of 6 months by her family physician. On admission she was found to be a well-nourished infant with a head circumference of 56 cm, bulging anterior fontanelle and mental retardation. Marked dilatation of the lateral ventricles

BACKGROUND: Respiratory cysts can be either congenital or acquired. Acquired cysts are thought to arise from the displacement of respiratory epithelium into adjacent tissues due to the disruption of normal anatomical barriers, possibly stemming from trauma.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old girl presented with a history of right orbital trauma, developed swelling in the right periorbital region 4 years after the injury. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cystic lesion in the lateral side of the intra-orbital space, showing communication with the frontal sinus and bony destructive erosion

While interpreting routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee joint, a radiologist may encounter various cystic lesions such as ganglion, synovial, and meniscal cysts, among others. In some cases, MRI may demonstrate cystlike lesions around the knee due to fluid distention of normal bursa and recesses, the diagnosis of which should not be difficult if a radiologist is familiar with their characteristic location and MRI appearance. In addition, there are cyst mimickers such as hematomas, abscesses, vascular lesions, and neoplasms around knee joint that may pose a diagnostic challenge

Glenoid labral cysts are commonly associated with labral tears, which can cause pain or instability. We present the case of a patient, referred for neurological complaints, who was actually suffering from supraspinatus nerve entrapment syndrome. Electroneurogram studies showed an isolated lesion of the branch to the infraspinatus muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a glenoid labral cyst extending from the cranial glenoid to the scapular notch. After arthroscopic debridement of an extended SLAP-lesion that had caused joint fluid extrusion, the dissolution of the cyst was associated wit

Hydatid disease was diagnosed by the arc 5 double diffusion (DD5) test in a patient with concomitant pulmonary disease. The localization of the cysts could not be determined by radiologic and scintillographic studies of the lung and abdomen. The hydatid nature of fluid collected by pleural puncture required for the concomitant infection, was established by using the aspirate as antigen in the DD5 test and five small pulmonary hydatid cysts were found at surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation is a pulmonary developmental anomaly arising from an overgrowth of the terminal respiratory bronchioles. This is such a rare malformation that it is not always thought of as a diagnostic possibility.
CASE: In the present case, after a large pulmonary cyst started deviating the mediastinum and following an increase in amniotic fluid volume in the fetus at 28 weeks of gestation, the placement of a catheter for continuous drainage was performed. Subsequent follow-up with ultrasounds and serial echocardiograms revealed normalization o

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the presence of numerous fluid-filled cysts, extensive fibrosis, and the progressive decline in kidney function. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), an important mediator for renal fibrosis and chronic kidney disease, is overexpressed by cystic cells compared with normal kidney cells; however, its role in PKD pathogenesis remains undefined. To investigate the effect of TGF-β1 on cyst growth, fibrosis, and disease progression, we overexpressed active TGF-β1 specifically in collecting ducts (CDs) of phenotypic normal (P
